[origin: WO2021122159A1] The invention proposes, in order to create an electrochemical device comprising a plurality of electrochemical units located in succession along a stacking direction, which units each comprise a diaphragm, a first gas diffusion layer, a second gas diffusion layer, a first sealing element integrally bonded to the first gas diffusion layer, a second sealing element integrally bonded to the second gas diffusion layer, and a bipolar plate which permits, in a simple fashion, precise positioning of the sealing elements of the electrochemical device relative to the bipolar plates of the electrochemical device when assembling the electrochemical device, that the first sealing element of at least one electrochemical unit is mechanically coupled by at least one coupling device to the second sealing element of the same electrochemical unit, to the first sealing element of an adjacent electrochemical unit, to the second sealing element of an adjacent electrochemical unit and/or to a bipolar plate.
