[origin: WO2021224750A1] The invention relates to a method for winding a thread (4) onto a spool (2) with a spool winder (1) and a controller. The spool casing (5) is retained between two retaining arms (6, 7) each having a respective receiving means (8, 9) and being rotationally fixed on a common pivot arm (10) provided with a pivot drive (13) with angular measurement, wherein at least one of the retaining arms (6) is formed in two parts and the two parts (15, 16) are connected via a load cell (12). Using the load cell (12), a bending force (27) acting on the retaining arm (6) is measured, which is controlled by the controller via a pivoting movement (14) of the pivot arm (10). A diameter (17) and a weight of the spool (5) are calculated by an evaluation unit.
