Verfahren und Maschine zum Herstellen eines stabförmigen Rauchartikels (10) mit einem mundseitigen Ende und einem stromaufwärts angeordneten distalen Ende, wobei der Rauchartikel mehrere Segmente (20, 30, 40, 50, 90) aufweist, wobei zumindest ein Segment (20) aerosolbildendes Substrat, insbesondere rekonstituierten Tabak, aufweist, und die Segmente zumindest ein Filtersegment A (90) und ein Filtersegment B (50) umfassen, wobei das Filtersegment A stromaufwärts des aerosolbildenden Substrats und das Filtersegment B stromabwärts des aerosolbildenden Substrats angeordnet ist, um einen Rauchartikel mit einem Schutzsegment am distalen Ende bereitzustellen, wobei das Segment am mundseitigen Ende und das Segment am distale Ende aus gleichartig ausgebildeten Filterstäben oder demselben Filterstab hergestellt sind.
