Abstract (en)
[origin: GB2598938A] An in vitro method of evaluating sperm health based on biomarker levels in a biological sample taken from a subject. The biomarker is membrane bound Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-products (mRAGE). The subject can be defined as mRAGE positive or negative. mRAGE positive can be indicative of poor sperm health, abnormal sperm, poor sperm motility and infertility. mRAGE negative can be indicative of normal sperm and good sperm health. The presence of quantifiable levels of mRAGE on sperm cells can define the patient as mRAGE positive, while the absence of quantifiable levels can define the patient as mRAGE negative. The method of evaluating sperm health can comprise a step of assessing sperm motility as either immotile, non-progressively motile or progressively motile. The method of evaluating sperm health can involve assessing sperm morphology whereby healthy sperm have smooth heads, are regularly contoured and oval in shape. The method of evaluating sperm health can involve the assessment of mitochondrial membrane potential. The method can comprise separation techniques such as density gradient centrifugation and the sperm swim up method. The method can diagnose infertility. The method can identify sperm for use in assisted reproductive technologies, intrauterine insemination, intracytoplasmic injection and in vitro fertilisation.
