An acceleration sensor (6) of the monitoring system (4) generates a signal (B2) during operation of the rail vehicle (2). In a test using a variable that depends on the signal, it is tested (B4) whether the monitoring system (4) has the malfunction. In order to improve the running stability monitoring, the test (B) is carried out during operation of the rail vehicle (2) in an operating range (dvP) in which the monitoring system (4) does not carry out any running stability monitoring.
