In addition, packaging blanks (7) are moved along a defined transfer path by means of a transportation device (50), wherein the packaging blanks (7) are introduced into a transportation path of the articles (5) moved by means of the horizontal conveying device (13) in this way and the articles (5) moved by means of the horizontal conveying device (13) are moved up to the packaging blanks (7) introduced into the transportation path. A sensor system (52, 54) and an open-loop and/or closed-loop control device (S) are used in the method. The sensor system (52, 54) is arranged in the region of the transportation device (50), so that a respective packaging blank (7) temporarily covers the at least one sensor system (52, 54) as it moves along the defined transfer path. Provision is additionally made for the open-loop and/or closed-loop control device (S) to generate operating information which takes into account data relating to coverage of the sensor system (52, 54) as well as a transportation speed of the transportation device (50). The open-loop and/or closed-loop control device (S) outputs the operating information.
