The invention relates to a method for determining a distraction level of a driver (20) of a vehicle (10), comprising the steps of: - acquiring the direction (D20) of the driver's gaze, and - maintaining or incrementing or decrementing a counter evaluating the distraction level, according to the acquired direction. According to the invention, the method comprises a step of acquiring an eccentricity level of a vehicle fitting relative to a reference direction, and at least one characteristic of the counter is determined according to the eccentricity level.
