[origin: WO2022188972A1] The invention relates to a method for operating a current collector and to a current collector (10) for the transfer of energy from a conductor rail (12) to a rail vehicle, wherein the current collector has a pressing device (14) with a contact shoe (15) which forms a sliding contact surface (16), wherein, by means of a rocker unit (18) with a swivelable rocker (19) and a spring device (20) of the pressing device, a pressing force is applied to the contact shoe arranged on the rocker, wherein, by means of the rocker unit, the contact shoe is moved relative to a conductor rail and, in order to form a sliding contact, is pressed against the conductor rail by the pressing force in a sliding contact position, wherein the current collector comprises a measuring unit having a measuring device, wherein at least one sensor (24) of a sensor device of the measuring device is arranged on the pressing device and/or adjacent to the pressing device, wherein a measured value of the pressing device is detected by means of the sensor device, wherein the measured value is processed by means of a processing device of the measuring device and a characteristic value describing an operating state of the current collector and/or the conductor rail is determined.
