[origin: WO2022229538A1] The turning gear (10) comprises a chassis (12) and two sets (AB, CD) of two rollers (A, B, C, D) arranged in such a way that when the turning gear is supporting a shell ring (2) in order to rotate it about its horizontal axis (X2), the lowermost portion of the shell ring is situated between the sets and the shell ring is supported by at least one of the rollers of each of the sets. For each roller, the turning gear comprises an actuator which regulates the positioning of the axis (XA, XB, XC, XD) of the roller with respect to the chassis, switching between a position-controlled mode in which the actuator fixes the position of the axis in order to keep the roller pressing in a rolling manner against the shell ring, and a non-position-controlled mode in which the actuator keeps the axis in position loosely so that the roller rests in sliding contact on the shell ring. For each roller, the turning gear also comprises a drive device which drives the roller in rotation about its axis at either a first speed when the roller is kept pressed in a rolling manner against a nominal cylindrical surface (5) of the shell ring, or a second speed, higher than the first, when the roller is kept pressed in a rolling manner against a reinforced cylindrical surface (7) of the shell ring.
