According to the invention, - each object (01 to 04) which has been detected by an object detection device (1.2) of the vehicle (1) and which was initially classified as not being relevant to the vehicle (1) is classified as being potentially relevant if a vehicle-side gaze detection device (1.4) detects that the gaze of at least one occupant of the vehicle (1) stays on the respective object (01 to 04) for longer than a specified minimum gaze duration, - a detected gaze direction of the at least one vehicle occupant is used to ascertain that a respective moving object (01, 02) classified as being potentially relevant has been tracked by the at least one vehicle occupant for at least a specified duration, and - the trajectory (T) of the respective detected moving object (01, 02) classified as being potentially relevant to the vehicle (1) is identified as being relevant to the safety of the vehicle (1) after the specified duration expires if it is necessary for the vehicle (1) to react to the respective object (01, 02).
