[origin: WO2022268757A1] In a method for tool exchange on a machine tool, a tool (180) is coupled to a tool holder (175) of a tool spindle (170) of the machine tool or is uncoupled from the tool holder. The tool spindle (170) is rotatable about a spindle axis (172) by means of a rotary drive in response to control signals from a control unit. The tool spindle (170) has components of a tool clamping system (160) which, when the tool is coupled and uncoupled, can be changed over between a clamping position with engagement on an engagement portion (187) of the tool and a joining position in response to control signals from the control unit. The tool (180) has a shank portion (182) which corresponds to the tool holder and an engagement portion (187) for mechanical coupling to the tool clamping system (160) on the spindle. The tool clamping system (160) is actuated by actively rotating the tool spindle (170) about the spindle axis (172) by way of a torque being introduced in the region of the tool-side end of the tool spindle (170).
