Before the plasma jet pierces into and through the workpiece, a scoured portion (410) is formed by exposing the workpiece, from the workpiece surface, to the plasma jet at least for a duration t2 such that, from the workpiece surface, material of the workpiece is removed and the scoured portion (410) is produced.
