    Description


    [0001] This invention relates to a method of measuring the blood pressure by means of blood pressure cuff of a new type.

    [0002] The blood pressure is usually measured by means of a blood pressure cuff which is placed around the patient's upper arm (or sometimes thigh) and which is kept in position by means of a bur fastener. The systolic and diastolic pressure can be measured by the aid of an air pump intended to set the cuff under pressure and a manometer.

    [0003] Today a standard cuff is used for measuring the blood pressure of all patients independently whether the patient's arm is slender or thick. The width of this standard cuff is about 12 cm. Due to the fact that there is a soft tissue between the blood vessel and the bone in the middle of the arm (or thigh) the real blood pressure measured with the same cuff is ambiguous for different arm thicknesses despite the same read pressure. Thus, a person having a slender arm will have a relatively low read pressure whereas a person having a thick arm will show a relatively high read pressure in spite of the persons in reality having the same blood pressure. In the latter case a higher pressure is required in the cuff to reach, i.e. actuate, the blood vessel. A corresponding lower pressure is required for the slender arm in order to actuate the blood vesssel. These conditions mean that the manometer is deflected which means in reality errors to the order of 5-10 mm Hg as to both the systolic and diastolic pressure.

    [0004] The limit of treating a patient for e.g. increase of blood pressure can be dependent on the fact whether the patient has 95 or 100 in the lower pressure, i.e. the diastolic one. Thus, the error margin of using this standard cuff is many times quite decisive whether a patient is considered as sick or not sick and is to be treated or not.

    [0005] Through GB-A-1 400 957 there is known a cuff structure provided with three chambers extending along the length of the bladder and communicating with one another alternately at ' the ends. The aim of this cuff is to try to eliminate the aforesaid drawbacks. The cuff has a given width and the thought is that the pressure in the constant width cuff should be distributed by means of the chambers. However, this is not possible without the aid of a clip, provided on the radially outer surfaces of the chambers and acting as a stiff anvil. This cuff will work like a common blood pressure cuff, however with a better application of the pressure forces.

    [0006] This invention tries to solve this problem and adapt the cuff width automatically to the patient's arm thickness (or thigh thickness) in order to eliminate the error margin as far as possible. This is possible by the invention being provided with the characteristic features defined in the claims.

    [0007] The blood pressure cuff of the invention will be described more in detail in the form of examples with reference to the drawing, in which Fig. 1 shows the basic principles of the invention very schematically in the form of a first example, Fig. 2 shows a detail as seen from the side of the cuff according to Fig. 1, Fig. 3 shows schematically another embodiment of the invention, Fig. 4 shows a sectional perspective view of the embodiment according to Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 shows schematically a section of the embodiment according to Fig. 3 in a somewhat modified form.

    [0008] In the connection concerned here a conventional cuff with respect to its basic structure with casing, lining and bur fasteners as well as mounted manometer is to be understood by the expression blood pressure cuff, and the cuff is in principle applied in usual manner. The details and components mentioned here are not shown more closely on the drawing or described in the following because they are no part of the invention.

    [0009] On the drawings, 1 designates a supporting frame or lining carrying the pressure creating part or parts of the pressure cuff which is the essential difference as compared with known blood pressure cuffs. 2 generally designates the cushion or bladder acting for the pressure measurement. This bladder 2 is divided into secondary bladders or sections 3, 4 and 5, see Figs. 1 and 4. A channel 6 leads to each section via a flexible line 7 connected to the peripheral equipment such as a manometer and air (not shown).

    [0010] The bladder 2 shown in Figs. 1 and 4 consists of three sections of different width and length starting from a common end edge of the cuff. The secondary bladders or sections 3-5 can either, as shown in Fig. 4, be made each in one piece and placed above each other or, as shown in Fig. 5, be formed by glueing, vulcanizing or welding a bladder corresponding to the section 5 along lines so that the three sections shown in Fig. 1 are obtained.

    [0011] According to Fig. 3 the bladder 2 consists of three secondary bladders or sections 3', 4' and 5' of equal length, the bladder 2 thus being formed either by three separate secondary bladders or sections 3'-5', or else one single bladder can be glued, vulcanized or welded, as previously described, along two lines to form the secondary bladders shown, cf. Fig. 5. Also these sections 3'-5' start from one common end edge of the cuff.

    [0012] Common to the embodiments shown here is that the flexible line 7 connecting the channels 6 extends substantially parallel to one longitudinal edge of the cuff, which part of the line is designated 8. A clip 9 is attached with one of its legs 10 in the frame of the pressure cuff and in connection with the end edge common to the sections.

    [0013] Using the blood pressure cuff of the invention the cuff is applied in usual manner around e.g. a patient's upper arm. Has the patient an arm of a normal size said end edge will be applied within the range II, see Figs. 1 and 3. The clip 9 is made to grip with its free leg 11 the part of the cuff lying above and will then squeeze together and throttle the common line 8 on one place within the range II. This means that the section 5 will not obtain any compressed air when the cuff is pumped up. Only the sections 3 and 4 will act, the width of the section 4 being adapted to normal arms, that is to say, the "free" length II of the section 4 will correspond to a circumferential range covering the designation "normal arms". If the patient has a slender arm the clip 9 will in a corresponding way be applied inside the range I, the flexible common line 8 being throttled so that compressed air will not have access to the sections 4 and 5 but only to the section 3. The width of the latter is adapted to normal arms whereby it is to be understood also here that the length of the section 3 corresponds to the maximum circumference which can be referred to "slender arms". If the cuff is applied around a thick arm the clip 9 will be placed in the range III, i.e. the clip 9 will not block the common line 8. This means that all the sections can be filled with compressed air, whereby it is appreciated that the section 5 has a width adapted to thick arms.

    [0014] The total sectional width of slender arms can e.g. lie between 8 and 11 cm, for normal arms about 12 cm and for thick arms e.g. about 14-15 cm. This is only examples and it is of course to be understood that more than three sections can be used within the scope of the invention, by which it is possible to obtain an additional exactness at blood pressure measurement of different arm thicknesses with the same cuff.

    [0015] In Fig. 5 the flexible common line 8 is shown as placed on the other side of the supporting frame 1, as compared with Figs. 1, and 4. This will only show that the invention is of course not restricted as to the exact location of the common line 8 and the secondary bladders or sections can of course be displaced relative to each other provided the criteria intended for the invention are fulfilled. The illustrative examples described here and shown on the drawing are only intended to clarify simple, cheap and practical embodiments of the inventive idea.

    [0016] The clip described to achieve a practical solution of the throttling of the common line 8 can be replaced with other means within the scope of the invention and the knowledge of one skilled in the art, but the throttling point must be within the intended area.

    [0017] Despite the fact that the invention has substantially been described in connection with blood pressure measurement of upper arms it is to be understood that the invention can also be dimensioned for measurement of the thighs.


    Claims

    1. A blood pressure cuff for measuring the blood pressure in slender, normal and thick upper arms as well as thighs, the cuff comprising of a number of inflatable sections extending along the length of the cuff, which sections are connected via channels (6) to an air pump creating the inflating pressure characterized in that, throttle means (9) are arranged to disconnect one or more channels (6) from the air pump depending on the thickness of the limb, so that a given number of sections may be inflated to define a given field acting on the limb during a blood pressure measurement.
     
    2. The cuff as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that a first section (3, 3') consists of a plane cushion or bladder of a flexible material having a width corresponding to a cuff width intended for slender upper arms and a length covering the circumferential range (I) of slender upper arms, that a second section (4, 4') extends outside the first section (3, 3') to form together with this section a width corresponding to a cuff width intended for normal upper arms and a length covering the circumferential range (II) of normal upper arms, and that a third section (5,5') extends outside the second section (4, 4') to form together with this section and the first section (3, 3') a width corresponding to a cuff width intended for thick upper arms and a length covering the circumferential range (III) of thick upper arms.
     
    3. The cuff as claimed in claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the throttle means (9) is arranged so that with the cuff wound once around the arm it disconnects the channel or channels (6) leading to the section or sections (3-5, 3'-5')) which are to be inactive for the corresponding arm thickness, with the air pump.
     
    4. The cuff as claimed in any one of claims 1-3, characterized in that the channels (6) leading to the respective section are connected with a common line (7, 8) to be associated with the air pump, which line extends along one longitudinal edge of the cuff.
     
    5. The cuff as claimed in any one of claims 1-4, characterized in that the sections (3-5) are of a different length and width and are arranged as starting from one common short side of the cuff, said channel (6), respectively, being connected to its associated section in the range of the terminal edge of the adjacent shorter section.
     
    6. The cuff as claimed in any one of claims 1-4, characterized in that the sections (3'-5') are of the same length and that the second and the third section in the form of elongate cushions or bladders are arranged in consecutive order near to the first section, said channel (6), respectively, being connected to its associated section in the range of the length for which the section is intended to act.
     
    7. The cuff as claimed in any one of claims 1-6, characterized in that the throttle means (9) has the form of a clip attached to one short side of the cuff, from which all the sections extend.
     
    8. A method of blood pressure measurement by means of a blood pressure cuff, characterized in that the width size of the cuff pressure field acting around the limb is automatically defined by the circumference of the limb, by using the cuff as claimed in anyone of the claims 1-7.
     


    Ansprüche

    1. Blutdruckmanschette zur Blutdruckmessung in schmalen, normalen und dicken Oberarmen wie auch in Oberschenkeln, wobei die Manschnette eine Anzahl aufblasbarer Abschnitte enthält, die sich längs der Manschetten länge erstrekken, wobei die Abschnitte durch Kanäle (6) an einer den Aufblasdruck erzeugenden Luftpumpe angeschlossen sind, dadurch gekennzeichnet, mass Drosselorgane (9) angeordnet sind um, abhängig von der Dicke des Körpergliedes, einen oder mehrere Kanäle (6) von der Luftpumpe, sodass eine gegebene Anzahl Abschnitte aufgeblasen werden um ein gegebenes, auf das Körperglied während der Blutdruckmessung wirkende Bereich abzugrenzen.
     
    2. Blutdruckmanschette gemäss Patentanspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass ein erster Abschnitt (3, 3') aus einem ebenen Kissen oder einer Blase aus biegsamem Werkstoff mit einer einer einem schamalen Oberarm angepassten und einer den Umkreisbereich (I) schmaler Orberarme deckende Manschettenbreite entsprechenden Breite besteht, dass ein zweiter Abschnitt (4, 4') sich ausserhalb des ersten Abschnittes (3, 3') erstreckt um zusammen mit diesem Abschnitt eine Breite zu bilden, die einer für normale Oberarme vorgesehenen und den Umkreisbereich (11) normaler Oberarme deckenden Manschettenbreite entspricht, und dass ein dritter Abschnitt (5, 4') sich ausserhalb des zweiten Abschnittes (4,4') erstreckt um zusammen mit diesem Abschnitt und dem ersten Abschnitt (3, 3') eine Breite zu bilden, die einer für dicke Oberarme vorgesehenen und den Umkreisbereich (111) dicker Oberarme deckenden Manschettenbreite entspricht.
     
    3. Blutdruckmanschette gemäss Patentanspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Drosselorgan (9) so angeordnet ist, dass es bei Anbringung der Manschette um den Arm herum den Kanal oder die zu dem Abschnitt oder den Abschnitten (3-5, 3'-5') leitenden Kanäle (6) zur Luftpumpe hin unterbricht, die für die entsprechende Armdicke untätig bleiben sollen.
     
    4. Blutdruckmanschette gemäss einem der Patentansprüche 1-3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die zu den entsprechenden Abschnitten fürhrende Kanäle (6) durch eine gemeinsame zur Luftpumpe gehörenden Leitung (7, 8) verbunden sind, die sich längs einer Längskante der Manschette erstreckt.
     
    5. Blutdruckmanschette gemäss einem der Patentansprüche 1-4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Abschnitte (3-5) unterschiedliche Länge und Breite aufweisen und von einer gemeinsamen Kurzseite der Manschette ausgehend angeordnet sind, wobei die Kanäle (6) jeweils an zugehörige Abschnitte im Bereich der Endkante des benachbarten kürrzeren Abschnittes angeschlossen sind.
     
    6. Blutdruckmanschette gemäss einem der Patentansprüche 1-4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Abschnitte (3'-5') die gleiche Länge aufweisen, und dass der zweite und der dritte Abschnitt in Gestalt länglicher Kissen oder Blasen nacheinander nahe dem ersten Abschnitt angeordnet sind, wobei der Kanal (6) jeweils an seinem zugehörigen Abschnitt im Bereich der Länge angeschlossen ist, innerhalb welcher der Abschnitt vorgesehen ist zu wirken.
     
    7. Blutdruckmanschette gemäss einem der Patentansprüche 1-6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Drosselorgan (9) die Gestalt einer an der Kurzseite der Manschette befestigten Klammer hat, von welcher Seite sämtliche Abschnitte ausgehen.
     
    8. Blutdruckmessverfahren mittels einer Blutdruckmanschette, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass bei Verwendung der Manschette gemäss einem der Patentansprüche 1-7 die Breitengrösse des um das Körperglied wirkenden Manschettendruckbereiches zwangsläufig vom Umfang des Körpergliedes bestimmt wird.
     


    Revendications

    1. Brassard pour la mesure de la pression sanguine de bras et de cuisses minces, normaux et gros, comprenant un nombre de sections gonflables s'étendant dans le sens de la longueur du brassard et reliées, par des conduites (6), à une pompe à air créant la pression de gonflage, caractérisé en ce qu'un organe d'étranglement (9) est disposé de façon à agir sur l'alimentation d'une ou de plusieurs des conduites (6) par la pompe à air en fonction de l'épaisseur du membre, de manière à permettre le gonflage d'un nombre donné de sections afin de définir un champ donné agissant sur le membre au cours d'une mesure de la pression sanguine.
     
    2. Brassard selon la revendication 1, caractérisé en ce qu'une première section (3, 3') est constituée par un coussin ou une vessie plans en matière souple, d'une largeur correspondant à une largeur de brassard destinée aux bras min- cess et d'une longueur recouvrant l'étendue circonférentielle (I) des bras minces, qu'une seconde section (4, 4') s'étend à l'extérieur de la première section (3, 3') de manière à former, avec celle-ci, une largeur correspondant à une largeur de brassard destinée aux bras normaux et une longueur recouvrant l'étendue circonférentielle (II) des bras normaux, et qu'une troisième section (5, 5') s'étend à l'extérieur de la second section (4,4') de manière à former, avec celle-ci et la première section (3, 3'), une largeur correspondant à une largeur de brassard destinée aux bras gros et une longueur recouvrant l'étendue circonférentielle (III) des bras gros.
     
    3. Brassard selon la revendication 1 ou 2, caractérisé en ce que l'organe d'étranglement (9) est disposé de façon à empêcher l'alimentation par la pompe à air, lorsque le brassard est enroulé une fois autour du bras, de la (des) conduite(s) (6) menant à la (aux) section(s) (3 à 5, 3' à 5') qui doivent rester inactives pour l'épaisseur de bras en question.
     
    4. Brassard selon une quelconque des revendications 1 à 3, caractérisé en ce que les conduites (6) menant à chacune des sections sont reliées à une ligne commune (7,8) à relier à la pompe à air, ladite ligne commune s'étendant le long de l'un des bords longitudinaux du brassard.
     
    5. Brassard selon une quelconque des revendications 1 à 4, caractérisé en ce que les section (3 à 5) sont de longueur et de largeur différentes et qu'elles sont disposées en partant d'un petit côté commun du brassard, chacune desdites conduites (6) étant reliée à sa section correspondante dans la région du bord terminal de la section plus courte adjacente.
     
    6. Brassard selon une quelconque des revendications 1 à 4, caractérisé en ce que les sections 3' à 5') sont de longueur égale et que la second et la troisième sections, revêtant la forme de coussins ou de vessies allongés, sont disposées l'une à la suite de l'autre à proximité de la première section, chacune desdites conduites (6) étant reliée à sa section correspondante dans la zone de la longueur pour laquelle la section en question doit intervenir.
     
    7. Brassard selon une quelconque des revendications 1 à 6, caractérisé en ce que l'organe d'étranglement (9) revêt la forme d'une pince fixée sur celui des petits côtés du brassard à partir duquel s'étendent toutes les sections.
     
    8. Procédé de mesure de la pression sanguine au moyen d'un brassard, caractérisé en ce que la largeur du champ de pression du brassard agissant autour du membre est automatiquement définie par la circonférence dudit membre, par utilisation du brassard selon une quelconque des revendications 1 à 7.
