    Description


    [0001] The present invention relates to a fuel supply device for an engine according to the preamble of independent claim 1. Such a fuel supply device can be taken from the prior art document JP 61 046455 A.

    [0002] Said prior art document discloses a fuel supply system for supplying fuel to a carburetor, wherein the fuel pump is connected to the passages in order to directly supply fuel from the tank to the float chamber of the carburetor. In addition to said arrangement, a starting fuel passage is also connected to the tank. Said passage is connected to a valve means. Said valve means is connected to a further tube, which is also connected to the float chamber of the carburetor.

    [0003] In some small outboard motors, for example, a fuel tank is disposed in a top cowling in which an engine is housed. In this structure, the fuel tank is positioned such that an fuel level in the fuel tank is higher than an fuel level in a float chamber in a carburetor so that fuel is supplied from the fuel tank to the carburetor using the head difference between the fuel levels.

    [0004] Alternatively, a fuel pump can be disposed midway of a fuel supply conduit so that fuel can be supplied to the engine immediately and stably even when the fuel levels have no head difference therebetween, as disclosed in JP-B-2717272.

    [0005] Meanwhile, when the fuel pump is disposed on the fuel supply conduit in the conventional fuel supply device, the fuel pump impedes flow through the conduit during a stop period of the fuel pump, thereby obstructing fuel supply to the carburetor even when the head difference between the fuel levels is of a certain distance. Starting the engine for a first time or after a long interval takes much time because the carburetor contains no fuel therein. Particularly when the engine is started with a recoil starter, this can cause a user to have a wrong judgment that the engine has a failure.

    [0006] Increasing the head difference between the fuel levels is expected to be effective to attain fuel supply to the carburetor before the fuel pump starts driving. However, due to restrictions such as a space necessary for providing the fuel tank, there is a limit on the distance by which the head difference can be increased. The present invention is made in view of the above conventional circumstances.

    [0007] It is an objective of the present invention to provide a fuel supply device for an engine as indicated above that can improve a starting characteristic of the engine.

    [0008] According to the present invention said objective is solved by a fuel supply device for an engine having the features of independent claim 1. Preferred embodiments are laid down in the dependent claims.

    [0009] Accordingly, it is provided a fuel supply device for an engine that can improve a starting characteristic of the engine by allowing automatic fuel supply to the carburetor before the fuel pump starts driving without increasing the head difference between the fuel levels by a great distance.

    [0010] Accordingly, it is provided a fuel supply device for an engine, the fuel supply device comprising: a carburetor having a float chamber; a fuel tank configured to contain fuel, the fuel tank being positioned such that, at least when the fuel tank is full with fuel, a fuel level in the fuel tank is higher than a minimum required fuel level in the float chamber of the carburetor; a fuel pump arranged to supply fuel from the fuel tank to the carburetor; and a bypass passage that bypasses the fuel pump.

    [0011] Preferably, an on-off valve is provided in the bypass passage in order to open and close the bypass passage.

    [0012] Accordingly, because the on-off valve is provided in the bypass passage that bypasses the fuel pump, the fuel can be supplied directly to the carburetor through the bypass passage before the fuel pump starts driving by opening the on-off valve when the engine is started. Hence, a starting characteristic of the engine can be improved without increasing the head difference between the fuel levels.

    [0013] Because, after the engine has been started, closing the on-off valve causes the fuel pump to supply fuel to the carburetor, fuel can be supplied stably to the carburetor even when the fuel level in the fuel tank declines.

    [0014] Preferably, the bypass passage includes at least one restricting portion configured to restrict the flow of fuel through the bypass passage.

    [0015] Accordingly, because the restricting portion is provided in the bypass passage, when the engine is started with the fuel level in the fuel tank low and with the on-off valve open, undesirable flowing of fuel, which is fed by the fuel pump, into the bypass passage to circulate therethrough is suppressed. Accordingly, fuel of a sufficient amount for starting the engine can be supplied to the carburetor. Furthermore, a failure in fuel supply performed by the fuel pump can be prevented even when a user forgets to close the on-off valve after the engine has been started. More specifically, in a state in which the bypass passage is open, the fuel fed by the fuel pump easily circulates to the fuel pump through the bypass passage, which can make it difficult to supply fuel to the carburetor. However, because the bypass passage includes the restricting portion, the circulation of the fuel is suppressed, thereby allowing reliable fuel supply to the carburetor.

    [0016] Further, preferably the restricting portion is located in a branch of the manifold.

    [0017] There is also provided a drive unit having an engine and a fuel supply device according to one of the above embodiments, said fuel supply device being configured to supply fuel to said engine.

    [0018] Preferably, a choke device is connected to the engine, said choke device being configured to be turned on manually or automatically when the engine is started and turned off manually or automatically after the engine has been started.

    [0019] Further, preferably the on-off valve includes an on-off mechanism to be opened or closed in accordance with an on-off operation of the choke device.

    [0020] Accordingly, because the on-off valve is opened or closed in accordance with an on-off operation of the choke device, the need of performing an on-off operation of the on-off valve is eliminated, thereby improving operability. More specifically, the choke device is generally turned on when the engine is started and turned off after the engine has been started. Therefore, the on-off valve is opened when the engine is started and closed after the engine has been started. Accordingly, the bypass passage is automatically opened to allow fuel to be supplied to the carburetor before the fuel pump starts driving, and after the engine has been started, the bypass passage is automatically closed to cause the fuel pump to supply fuel to the carburetor.

The outboard motor 1 is mounted on a stern 3a of the hull 3 with a clamp bracket 2 and supported to be rotatable about a pivot shaft X and tiltable about a tilt shaft Y between a running position A (the position indicated by solid lines in FIG. 1) and a tilt up position B (the position indicated by long dashed double-short dashed lines in FIG. 1).

An air duct 8a, through which outside air is induced to the engine 7, is defined in the cowling 8 (see FIG. 2).

    [0031] The upper case 6 has a cylindrical lower case element 6a, in which the drive shaft is housed, and an upper case element 6b supporting the engine 7 and being in an upwardly-open bowl shape. The cowling 8 is detachably attached to the upper case element 6b.

    [0032] A rod-like steering handlebar 10 extending frontward of the hull is attached to the upper case 6. An acceleration grip 11 is attached to the steering handlebar 10.

    [0038] An intake system of the engine 7 has an intake passage (not shown) connected to an intake port, a carburetor 20 connected to the upstream side of the intake passage, and a silencer (not shown) connected to the carburetor 20. The intake port has its opening in the top face of the cylinder head 16.

    [0039] The carburetor 20 includes a venturi passage 20a, and has a throttle valve 21 that changes a flow area through the venturi passage 20a and a float chamber 20b for reserving fuel therein. The accelerator grip 11 is coupled to the throttle valve 21 via a throttle cable 21 a.

    [0040] The engine 7 includes a choke device 22 to be turned on when the engine 7 is started to increase a fuel ratio in air-fuel mixture supplied from the carburetor 20, thereby facilitating the starting and turned off after the engine 7 has been started to reduce the fuel ratio in the air-fuel mixture supplied from the carburetor 20 to a regular value. The choke device 22 includes a choke valve (not shown) for opening and closing a starting passage (not shown) of the carburetor 20, a choke cable 22a connected at one end to the choke valve, and a choke knob 22c connected to the other end of the choke cable 22a. The choke knob 22c is disposed on a front wall of the cowling 8.

    [0041] When a user pulls the choke knob 22c to start the engine, the choke device 22 is turned on, opening the starting passage of the carburetor 20. When the choke knob 22c is pushed back, the choke device 22 is turned off, closing the starting passage.

    [0042] The engine 7 has a fuel supply device 23. The fuel supply device 23 includes a fuel tank 24, which is made of a resin and in which fuel is reserved, and a fuel pump 25 for supplying the fuel in the fuel tank 24 to the carburetor 20.

    [0043] While an upstream fuel hose 28 connects the fuel tank 24 with the fuel pump 25, a downstream fuel hose 29 connects the fuel pump 25 with the carburetor 20. The upstream side and the downstream side of the fuel pump 25 is bypass through a bypass passage 35. An on-off valve 36 for opening and closing the bypass passage 35 is inserted into the bypass passage 35.

    [0044] The fuel tank 24 is disposed at a position inside the cowling 8 and to the front of the crankcase 14. The fuel tank 24 has a tank body 24a extending vertically along a front wall of the crankcase 14 and a fuel filler port 24b provided at the top end of the tank body 24a.

    [0045] A mount boss 24c projecting rearward is formed on the tank body 24a. The boss 24c is fixed to the crankcase 14 with a bolt 27. Thus, said fuel supply device 23 is mounted to said engine 7.

The downstream end 29b of the downstream fuel hose 29 is connected to a fuel inlet 20c defined in an upper portion of the float chamber 20b.

When a switching cock 30a is rotated, the switching valve 30 is switched to one of a position for using the fuel in the fuel tank 24, a position for using fuel in an external fuel tank (not shown) mounted on the hull 3, and a position for stopping fuel supply to the carburetor 20.

    [0058] Because the outboard motor 1 of this embodiment is to be mounted on a boat, neither a battery nor a starter motor is provided on the outboard motor 1. The outboard motor 1 is configured such that when the starting rope 18 is pulled, the crankshaft 14a is rotated, which starts the engine 7.

    [0059] When the engine is started for a first time or after a long interval, chances are high that the carburetor 20 contains no fuel therein. Hence, it has conventionally been necessary to pull the starting rope 18 repeatedly to supply fuel to the carburetor; that is, the engine starts hard. This can disadvantageously result in addressing of a complaint that the engine has a failure or is defective. Presumably, because the fuel pump 25 impedes flow through the fuel supply conduit, the head difference of the degree obtained from the configuration according to this embodiment is insufficient to supply fuel to the carburetor 20.

    [0060] However, according to this embodiment, the bypass passage 35 that bypasses the fuel pump 25 is provided and the on-off valve 36 is disposed midway of the bypass passage 35. Accordingly, when the choke knob 22c is pulled when the engine is started, the on-off valve 36 interlocked therewith is opened, allowing fuel to directly flow into the float chamber 20b of the carburetor 20 through the bypass passage 35 while bypassing the fuel pump 25. Consequently, the engine 7 can be started easily without increasing the head difference between the fuel levels, thereby improving a starting characteristic of the engine during a stop period of the fuel pump 25.

    [0061] When the choke knob 22c is pushed back after the engine 7 has been started, the on-off valve 36 is closed, and the fuel pump 25 driven by the engine 7 supplies fuel to the carburetor 20.

    [0062] In this embodiment, the on-off valve 36 is constructed to open or close in accordance with an opening or closing operation of the choke device 22. Accordingly, while the bypass passage 35 is opened as the choke device 22 is opened when the engine 7 is started, the bypass passage 35 is closed when the choke device 22 is closed on completion of warming up of the engine 7. As described above, because the bypass passage 35 is opened or closed in accordance with a usual on-off operation of the choke device 22 performed by a user when the engine is started, the need of operating the on-off valve 36 is eliminated, thereby improving operability.

Accordingly, fuel can be supplied to the carburetor 20 by the fuel pump 25 without a hitch even when a user forgets to close the choke device 22 and thus forgets to close the on-off valve 36 after the engine has been started. More specifically, in a state in which the bypass passage 35 is open, the fuel fed by the fuel pump 25 undesirably circulates to the fuel pump 25 through the bypass passage 35, which can make it difficult to supply fuel to the carburetor 20. However, according to this embodiment, because the restricting portions 37a and 38a are provided on the portions for the bypass passage 35, the circulation of the fuel is suppressed, thereby allowing the fuel to be supplied to the carburetor 20.

    [0064] The embodiment has described the example in which the fuel supply device is for an outboard motor. However, the fuel supply device can be applied to fuel supply devices for motorcycle engines, general-purpose engines, and the like engines.

A bypass passage 35 that bypasses a fuel pump 25 is provided, and an on-off valve 36 is disposed in the bypass passage 35.


    Claims

    1. Fuel supply device for an engine, the fuel supply device comprising:

    a carburetor (20) having a float chamber (20b);

    a fuel tank (24) configured to contain fuel, the fuel tank (24) being positioned such that, at least when the fuel tank (24) is full with fuel, a fuel level (a) in the fuel tank (24) is higher than a minimum required fuel level (b) in the float chamber (20b) of the carburetor (20);

    a fuel pump (25) arranged to supply fuel from the fuel tank (24) to the carburetor (20);

    an upstream fuel hose (28) that connects the fuel tank (24) with the fuel pump (25), and a downstream fuel hose (29) that connects the fuel pump (25) with the carburetor 20, characterized by

    an upstream manifold (37) disposed in the upstream fuel hose (28), a downstream manifold (38) disposed in the downstream fuel hose (29), said manifolds (37,38) being connected to a bypass passage (35) to bypass the fuel pump (25).


     
    2. Fuel supply device according to claim 1, characterized in that an on-off valve (36) is provided in the bypass passage (35) in order to open and close the bypass passage (35).
     
    3. Fuel supply device according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the bypass passage (35) includes at least one restricting portion (37a,38a) configured to restrict the flow of fuel through the bypass passage (35).
     
    4. Fuel supply device according to claim 3, characterized in that the restricting portion (37a,38a) is located in a branch of the manifold (37,38).
     
    5. Drive unit having an engine (7) and a fuel supply device (23) according to one of claims 1 to 4, said fuel supply device (23) being configured to supply fuel to said engine (7).
     
    6. Drive unit according to claim 5, wherein a choke device (22) is connected to the engine (7), said choke device (22) being configured to be turned on manually or automatically when the engine (7) is started and turned off manually or automatically after the engine (7) has been started.
     
    7. Drive unit according to claim 6, wherein the on-off valve (36) includes an on-off mechanism to be opened or closed in accordance with an on-off operation of the choke device (22).
     
    8. Drive unit according to claim 7, wherein an interlocking pin (22d) is connected to an inner cable (22b) of the choke device (22) for operating the on-off valve (36).
     
    9. Drive unit according to one of claims 5 to 8, wherein the fuel supply device (23) is mounted to the engine (7).
     
    10. Outboard motor for a boat, said outboard motor having a drive unit according to one of claims 5 to 9.
     


    Ansprüche

    1. Kraftstoffzuführungsvorrichtung für eine Brennkraftmaschine, wobei die Kraftstoffzuführungsvorrichtung aufweist:

    einen Kraftstofftank (24), konfiguriert den Kraftstoff zu enthalten, wobei der Kraftstofftank (24) derart positioniert ist, dass zumindest, wenn der Kraftstofftank (24) mit Kraftstoff gefüllt ist, ein Kraftstoffniveau (a) in dem Kraftstofftank (24) höher ist als ein erforderliches minimales Kraftstoffniveau (b) in der Schwimmerkammer (20b) des Vergasers (20);

    eine Kraftstoffpumpe (25), angeordnet, um Kraftstoff aus dem Kraftstofftank (24) zu dem Vergaser (20) zuzuführen;

    einen stromaufseitigen Kraftstoffschlauch (28), der den Kraftstofftank (24) mit der Kraftstoffpumpe (25) verbindet, und einen Stromabseitigen Kraftstoffschlauch (29), der die Kraftstoffpumpe (25) mit dem Vergaser (20) verbindet, gekennzeichnet durch

    einen stromaufseitigen Verteiler (37), angeordnet in dem stromaufseitigen Kraftstoffschlauch (28), einen stromabseitigen Verteiler (38), angeordnet in dem stromabseitigen Kraftstoffschlauch (29), wobei die Verteiler (37, 38) mit einem Bypass- Kanal (35) verbunden sind, um die Kraftstoffpumpe (25) zu umgehen.


     
    2. Kraftstoffzuführungsvorrichtung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass ein Ein- Aus- Ventil (36) in dem Bypass- Kanal (35) vorgesehen ist, um den Bypass- Kanal (35) zu öffnen oder zu schließen.
     
    3. Kraftstoffzuführungsvorrichtung nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Bypass- Kanal (35) zumindest einen Beschränkungsabschnitt (37a, 38a) enthält, konfiguriert, den Fluss des Kraftstoffes durch den Bypass- Kanal (35) zu beschränkt.
     
    4. Kraftstoffzuführungsvorrichtung nach Anspruch 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Beschränkungsabschnitt (37a, 38a) in einer Verzweigung des Verteilers (37, 38) angeordnet ist.
     
    5. Antriebseinheit mit einer Brennkraftmaschine (7) und einer Kraftstoffzuführungsvorrichtung nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, wobei die Kraftstoffzuführungsvorrichtung (23) konfiguriert ist, Kraftstoff zu der Brennkraftmaschine (7) zuzuführen.
     
    6. Antriebseinheit nach Anspruch 5, wobei eine Choke- Vorrichtung (22) mit der Brennkraftmaschine (7) verbunden ist, wobei die Choke- Vorrichtung konfiguriert ist, manuell oder automatisch eingeschaltet zu werden, wenn die Brennkraftmaschine (7) gestartet wird und manuell oder automatisch ausgeschaltet zu werden, wenn die Brennkraftmaschine (7) gestartet worden ist.
     
    7. Antriebseinheit nach Anspruch 6, wobei das Ein- Aus- Ventil (36) eine Ein- Aus-Vorrichtung enthält, um in Übereinstimmung mit einem Ein- Aus- Betrieb der Choke- Vorrichtung (22) geöffnet oder geschlossen zu werden.
     
    8. Antriebseinheit nach Anspruch 7, wobei ein Verriegelungsbolzen (22d) mit einem inneren Kabel (22b) der Choke- Vorrichtung (22) verbunden ist, um das Ein- Aus-Ventil (36) zu betätigen.
     
    9. Antriebseinheit nach einem der Ansprüche 5 bis 8, wobei die Kraftstoffzuführungsvorrichtung (23) an der Brennkraftmaschine (7) montiert ist.
     
    10. Außenbordmotor für ein Boot mit einer Antriebseinheit nach einem der Ansprüche 5 bis 9.
     


    Revendications

    1. Dispositif d'alimentation en carburant pour un moteur, le dispositif d'alimentation en carburant comportant :

    un carburateur (20) possédant une cuve à niveau constant (20b) ;

    un réservoir à carburant (24) conçu pour contenir du carburant, le réservoir à carburant (24) étant positionné de telle sorte que, au moins lorsque le réservoir à carburant (24) est rempli de carburant, un niveau de carburant (a) dans le réservoir à carburant (24) est supérieur à un niveau de carburant requis minimal (b) dans la cuve à niveau constant (20b) du carburateur (20) ;

    une pompe à carburant (25), conçue pour acheminer le carburant du réservoir à carburant (24) vers le carburateur (20) ;

    un tuyau de carburant amont (28), qui relie le réservoir à carburant (24) à la pompe à carburant (25), et un tuyau de carburant aval (29), qui relie la pompe à carburant (25) au carburateur (20),

    caractérisé par

    un collecteur amont (37), disposé dans le tuyau de carburant amont (28), un collecteur aval (38) disposé dans le tuyau de carburant aval (29), lesdits collecteurs (37,38) étant reliés à un passage de dérivation (35) permettant d'éviter la pompe à carburant (25).


     
    2. Dispositif d'alimentation en carburant selon la revendication 1, caractérisé en ce qu'une vanne d'activation-désactivation (36) est placée dans le passage de dérivation (35) afin d'ouvrir et de fermer le passage de dérivation (35).
     
    3. Dispositif d'alimentation en carburant selon la revendication 1 ou 2, caractérisé en ce que le passage de dérivation (35) comporte au moins une partie de restriction (37a, 38a) conçue pour restreindre le flux de carburant dans le passage de dérivation (35).
     
    4. Dispositif d'alimentation en carburant selon la revendication 3, caractérisé en ce que la partie de restriction (37a, 38a) est située dans une branche du collecteur (37, 38).
     
    5. Unité de propulsion possédant un moteur (7) et un dispositif d'alimentation en carburant (23) selon l'une des revendications 1 à 4, ledit dispositif d'alimentation en carburant (23) étant conçu pour alimenter ledit moteur (7) en carburant.
     
    6. Unité de propulsion selon la revendication 5, dans laquelle un volet de départ (22) est relié au moteur (7), ledit volet de départ (22) étant conçu pour être activé manuellement ou automatiquement lorsque le moteur (7) est démarré et désactivé manuellement ou automatiquement lorsque le moteur (7) a été démarré.
     
    7. Unité de propulsion selon la revendication 6, dans laquelle la vanne d'activation-désactivation (36) comporte un mécanisme d'activation-désactivation qui doit être ouvert ou fermé en fonction d'une opération d'activation-désactivation du volet de départ (22).
     
    8. Unité de propulsion selon la revendication 7, dans laquelle un axe d'interverrouillage (22d) est relié à un câble interne (22b) du volet de départ (22) pour actionner la vanne d'activation-désactivation (36).
     
    9. Unité de propulsion selon l'une des revendications 5 à 8, dans laquelle le dispositif d'alimentation en carburant (23) est monté sur le moteur (7).
     
    10. Moteur hors-bord pour un bateau, ledit moteur hors-bord possédant une unité de propulsion selon l'une des revendications 5 à 9.
