    Description


    [0001] The following description relates to a curved display apparatus.

    [0002] Generally, a display module is a device including a display panel to display an image. In recent years, a display module using a liquid crystal display panel has been widely used.

    [0003] A display module includes a display panel, such as a liquid crystal display panel, and a backlight unit disposed at the rear of the display panel.

    [0004] The backlight unit includes a pair of light emitting diode modules disposed at opposite sides of the rear of the display panel such that the light emitting diode modules face each other to generate light, and a light guide plate disposed at the rear of the display panel between the light emitting diode modules to guide the light irradiated from the light emitting diode modules to the display panel.

    [0005] The following description relates to a display apparatus, from which a light guide plate is omitted.

    [0006] US2005/117197 and US2007/146569 disclose curved display apparatuses in which the light from light sources is guided to the display panel using a light guide plate.

    [0007] US2010/0142220 discloses a planar display apparatus in which light from light sources is guided to the display panel using a hollow light guide formed by a rear housing having a light diffusion pattern on its interior surface.

    [0008] KR2009/0008749U discloses a planar display apparatus in which light from two light sources is guided to the display panel using a planar light guide, the two light sources being arranged on opposite edges of the light guide plate. A third light source is arranged below the light guide plate at a centre portion of the the display apparatus to directly illuminate the display panel.

    [0009] Additional aspects of the invention will be set forth in part in the description which follows and, in part, will be obvious from the description, or may be learned by practice of the invention.

    [0010] In accordance with an aspect of the present invention, a curved display apparatus includes the features of appended independent claim 1.

    [0013] Reference will now be made in detail to the embodiments of the present invention, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to like elements throughout.

    [0014] As shown in FIG. 1, a curved display apparatus 1 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure is curved such that opposite sides of the curved display apparatus protrude further forward than the middle of the curved display apparatus. As a result, a 2-dimensional (2D) image on the curved display apparatus 1 may provide a cubic, or 3-dimensional, effect.

    [0015] As shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the curved display apparatus 1 includes a display module 100 to display an image.

    [0016] The display module 100 includes a display panel 10 to display an image, a pair of backlight units 20 disposed at opposite sides of the rear of the display panel 10, a diffusion plate 30 disposed between the display panel 10 and the backlight units 20 to diffuse light generated by the backlight units 20 to the display panel 10, a support 40, for example a moulded frame, to support the display panel 10 and the diffusion plate 30, a front housing, or frame, 50 coupled to the front side of the support 40 to maintain a connected state between the display panel 10 and the support 40, and a rear housing 60 coupled to the rear side of the support 40 such that the backlight units 20 are disposed at inner opposite sides of the rear housing 60.

    [0017] In this embodiment, the display apparatus 1 is curved, and therefore, the display module 100 included in the curved display apparatus 1 is also configured to have curvature from side to side. Consequently, the display panel 10, the diffusion plate 30, the support 40, the front housing 50, and the rear housing 60 constituting the display module 100 are formed to have curvature from side to side such that opposite sides of each component protrude farther forward than the middle of each component. The respective components may have the same curvature. Alternatively, the respective components may have different curvatures according to design.

    [0018] The display panel 10 may be a liquid crystal display panel. The display panel 10 includes a thin film transistor substrate 11 having thin film transistors, a colour filter substrate 12 opposite to the thin film transistor substrate 11, and a liquid crystal layer (not shown) disposed between the thin film transistor substrate 11 and the colour filter substrate 12. In addition, the display panel 10 further includes a flexible printed circuit board 13 provided at one side of the thin film transistor substrate 11, a drive chip 14 mounted to the flexible printed circuit board 13, and a panel circuit board 15 connected to the other side of the flexible printed circuit board 13. In this embodiment, the display panel 10 is configured such that the display panel 10 is curved from the middle to opposite sides thereof while curvature of the display panel 10 varies along the display panel 10. In addition, the display panel 10 is curved such that the opposite sides of the display panel 10 are symmetric with respect to the middle of the display panel 10.

    [0019] The backlight units 20 are disposed at the inner opposite sides of the rear housing 60 to emit light to the inner middle portion of the rear housing 60. Each backlight unit 20 includes a vertically extending substrate 21 to be disposed at a corresponding inner side of the rear housing 60 and a plurality of light emitting diodes 22 arranged at the substrate 21 at intervals in the longitudinal direction of the substrate 21.

    [0020] In addition, each backlight unit 20 further includes a light guide 23 mounted at each light emitting diode 22 to guide light generated by each light emitting diode 22 such that the light is radiated to the rear housing 60. In this embodiment, each light guide 23 includes a parabolic reflector having a parabolic reflective surface. Consequently, most of the light generated by the light emitting diodes 22 is guided to the inside of the rear housing 60 through the light guides 23, is reflected by the rear housing 60, and is thus indirectly transmitted to the display panel 10.

    [0021] As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the diffusion plate 30 is received in a peripheral groove in the support 40, the display panel 10 and the front housing 50 are sequentially mounted at the front side of the support 40, and the rear housing 60 is mounted at the rear side of the support 40. The support 40 supports the respective components, and, in addition, maintains a space between the display panel 10 and the rear housing 60.

    [0022] The front housing 50 includes a bezel 50a to cover the front edge of the display panel 10 and a front side part 50b bent backward from one end of the bezel 50a to cover the side of the support 40.

    [0023] The rear housing 60 includes a rear part 60a forming the rear of the display module 100 and a rear side part 60b extending forward from the periphery of the rear part 60a to be coupled into the support 40.

    [0024] The rear housing 60 is curved such that opposite sides of the rear housing 60 protrude farther forward than the middle of the rear housing 60. Correspondingly, the rear part 60a of the rear housing 60 is also curved such that opposite sides of the rear part 60a protrude farther forward than the middle of the rear part 60a.

    [0025] Consequently, light generated by the light emitting diodes 22 is reflected by the curved rear part 60a of the rear housing 60 and is guided to the display panel 10. That is, the rear part 60a of the rear housing 60 functions to guide light generated by the light emitting diodes 22 to the display panel 10. As a result, it is possible to guide light generated by the light emitting diodes 22 to the display panel 10 through the rear housing 60, without the provision of a component corresponding to a light guide plate used in a general, or conventional, display apparatus.

    [0026] The rear housing 60 is curved to have curvature varying toward opposite sides thereof such that the rear housing 60 uniformly reflects light throughout the display panel 10. Specifically, the rear housing 60 is configured such that the rear housing 60 is curved from the middle to opposite sides thereof while curvature of the rear housing 60 varies along the rear housing 60. In addition, the rear housing 60 is curved such that the opposite sides of the rear housing 60 are symmetric with respect to the middle of the rear housing 60.

    [0027] In one embodiment, a reflective layer 61 is formed on the inner side of the rear part 60a of the rear housing 60 to more efficiently reflect light. Consequently, light radiated to the rear housing 60 may be reflected to the front side, at which the display panel 10 is located, by the reflective layer 61. In an embodiment, the reflective layer 61 is formed by disposing a sheet type member at the inner side of the rear part 60a of the rear housing 60.

    [0028] A diffusion pattern 61a (see FIG. 4) to more efficiently diffuse light irradiated to the reflective layer 61 is formed at selected portions of the reflective layer 61. In embodiments according to the invention, as shown in FIG. 4, the diffusion pattern 61a is formed only at portions of the reflective layer 61 where light travelling from the light emitting diodes 22 in a direction that is perpendicular to the substrate 21 strikes the reflecting layer 61 as a result of the curvature of the rear housing. Most of the light generated by the light emitting diodes 22 is radiated perpendicularly to the substrate that supports the light emitting diodes 22 and so strikes the reflective layer 61 in a particular portion. If the light from the above portion of the reflective layer 61 is diffused in the same manner as the light from the remaining portions of the reflective layer 61, the brightness of the display panel 10 may not be uniform. This phenomenon is prevented by the diffusion pattern 61a.

    [0029] The diffusion plate 30 is spaced apart from the rear housing 60. The backlight units 20 are disposed at opposite sides of a space between the diffusion plate 30 and the inside of the rear housing 60, i.e. the rear side part 60b. Consequently, light generated by the backlight units 20 is irradiated to the part 60a of the rear housing 60 through the space between the diffusion plate 30 and the rear part 60a of the rear housing 60. In this embodiment, a diffusion sheet 31 is disposed at the front of the diffusion plate 30 to further diffuse the light having passed through the diffusion plate 30.

    [0030] Also, as shown in FIG. 4, a reverse prism type pattern 30a is formed at the rear of the diffusion plate 30. Light incident upon the rear of the diffusion plate 30 at a small incidence angle is irradiated to the display panel 10 through the diffusion plate 30. On the other hand, light incident upon the rear of the diffusion plate 30 at a large incidence angle is reflected toward the inside of the rear housing 60 by the reverse prism type pattern 30a and is then diffused and reflected by the rear housing 60. In this embodiment, the backlight units 20 are disposed at the opposite sides of the rear of the display panel 10; however, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited thereto. In a case in which a sufficient amount of light is not obtained at the middle portion of the display panel 10, as shown in FIG. 5, a plurality of auxiliary backlight units 70 may be disposed at the middle portion of the rear part 60a of the rear housing 60 to irradiate a sufficient amount of light to the middle portion of the display panel 10.

    [0031] In this embodiment, the reflective layer 61 is formed at the inside of the rear part 60a of the rear housing 60; however, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited thereto. Light may be directly reflected by the inside of the rear housing 60 without the provision of a component corresponding to the reflective layer 61.

    [0032] Also, the reflective layer may have surface roughness varying depending upon portions thereof without the provision of the diffusion pattern.

    [0033] Also, in this embodiment, each light guide 23 includes a parabolic reflector; however, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited thereto. Each light guide may include a transparent optical lens such that light has directivity while passing through each light guide.

    [0034] Also, in this embodiment, the reflective layer 61 is formed by disposing a sheet type member at the inside of the rear housing 60; however, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited thereto. Paint, for example, may be applied to the inside of the rear housing 60 to form a reflective layer. Alternatively, the inside of the rear housing may be processed to form a reflective layer.

    [0035] In this embodiment, each backlight unit 20 includes light emitting diodes 22 and the substrate 21 on which the light emitting diodes 22 are mounted; however, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited thereto. Various lighting devices, such as a cold cathode fluorescent lamp, for example, to generate light may be used as the backlight units 20.

    [0036] Also, in this embodiment, the backlight units 20 are disposed at the opposite sides of the rear of the display panel 10; however, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited thereto. One backlight unit 20 may be disposed only at one side of the rear of the display panel 10 according to design.

    [0037] As is apparent from the above description, the display apparatus according to the embodiment of the present disclosure is configured such that light generated by the backlight units is reflected by the curved rear housing and is then guided to the display panel. Consequently, a light guide plate to guide light to the display panel is omitted from the display apparatus.

    [0038] Although a few embodiments of the present invention have been shown and described, it would be appreciated by those skilled in the art that changes may be made in these embodiments without departing from the scope of the claims.


    Claims

    1. A curved display apparatus (1) comprising:

    a curved display panel (10);

    a curved rear housing (60) disposed at the rear of the curved display panel and spaced apart from the curved display panel, the curved rear housing (60) including a rear part (60a) and a rear side part (60b) orthogonally extending from the periphery of the rear part (60a) towards the curved display panel (10); and

    a light source unit (20) disposed at an inner side of the rear side part (60b) of the curved rear housing and arranged to radiate light to the curved rear housing,

    wherein the curved rear housing is arranged to reflect the light radiated from the light source unit to the curved display panel, characterised in that the curved display apparatus does not comprise an edge-illuminated light guide plate for guiding light from the light source unit to the curved display panel, and

    that the curved rear housing is provided at the inside thereof with a diffusion pattern (61a) to diffuse light radiated from the light source unit, the diffusion pattern being formed only at portions of the curved rear housing where light radiated in a direction perpendicular to the rear side part (60b) of the rear housing strikes the curved rear housing.


     
    2. The curved display apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the curved rear housing is curved such that opposite sides of the curved rear housing are symmetric with respect to the middle of the curved rear housing.
     
    3. The curved display apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the light source unit comprises a substrate (21) and a plurality of light emitting diodes (22) arranged on the substrate at intervals in a longitudinal direction of the substrate.
     
    4. The curved display apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the light source unit further comprises a respective light guide (23) mounted at each light emitting diode (22) to guide light generated by each light emitting diode to the inside of the curved rear housing.
     
    5. The curved display apparatus according to claim 4, wherein each light guide comprises a parabolic reflector having a parabolic reflective surface.
     
    6. The curved display apparatus according to claim 4, wherein each light guide comprises an optical lens.
     
    7. The curved display apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a reflective layer (61) disposed on the inside of the curved rear housing to reflect the light radiated from the light source unit.
     
    8. The curved display apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a diffusion plate (30) disposed between the curved display panel and the curved rear housing and spaced apart from the curved rear housing.
     
    9. The curved display apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the diffusion plate is provided with a reverse prism type pattern at the rear thereof.
     
    10. The curved display apparatus according to claim 8 or 9, further comprising a diffusion sheet (31) disposed at the front of the diffusion plate to diffuse light having passed through the diffusion plate such that the diffused light is transmitted to the curved display panel.
     
    11. The curved display apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising an auxiliary light source unit (70) disposed at a middle portion of the inside of the rear housing.
     
    12. The curved display apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a support (40) to maintain a spacing between the curved display panel and the curved rear housing.
     
    13. The curved display apparatus according to claim 12, further comprising a front housing (50) mounted at the front of the support to maintain a connected state between the curved display panel and the support.
     


    Ansprüche

    1. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung (1), die Folgendes umfasst:

    ein gekrümmtes Anzeigefeld (10);

    ein gekrümmtes hinteres Gehäuse (60), das an der Rückseite des gekrümmten Anzeigefelds angeordnet und von dem gekrümmten Anzeigefeld beabstandet ist, wobei das gekrümmte hintere Gehäuse (60) einen hinteren Teil (60a) und einen sich rechtwinklig vom Umfang des hinteren Teils (60a) zum gekrümmten Anzeigefeld (10) hin erstreckenden hinteren Seitenteil (60b) umfasst; und

    eine Lichtquelleneinheit (20), die an einer Innenseite des hinteren Seitenteils (60b) des gekrümmten hinteren Gehäuses angeordnet ist und dazu angeordnet ist, Licht zu dem gekrümmten hinteren Gehäuse zu strahlen, wobei das gekrümmte hintere Gehäuse dazu angeordnet ist, das von der Lichtquelleneinheit gestrahlte Licht zu dem gekrümmten Anzeigefeld zu reflektieren,

    dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung keine randbeleuchtete Lichtleiterplatte zum Leiten von Licht von der Lichtquelleneinheit zu dem gekrümmten Anzeigefeld umfasst, und

    dass das gekrümmte hintere Gehäuse an seinem Inneren mit einem Diffusionsmuster (61a) versehen ist, um von der Lichtquelle gestrahltes Licht zu diffundieren, wobei das Diffusionsmuster nur an Abschnitten des gekrümmten hinteren Gehäuses gebildet ist, wo in einer zum hinteren Seitenteil (60b) des hinteren Gehäuses senkrechten Richtung gestrahltes Licht auf das gekrümmte hintere Gehäuse auftrifft.


     
    2. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach Anspruch 1, wobei das gekrümmte hintere Gehäuse derart gekrümmt ist, dass gegenüberliegende Seiten des gekrümmten hinteren Gehäuses in Bezug auf die Mitte des gekrümmten hinteren Gehäuses symmetrisch sind.
     
    3. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, wobei die Lichtquelleneinheit ein Substrat (21) und eine Vielzahl von Leuchtdioden (22), die in Abständen in einer Längsrichtung des Substrats auf dem Substrat angeordnet sind, umfasst.
     
    4. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach Anspruch 3, wobei die Lichtquelleneinheit weiter einen an jeder Leuchtdiode (22) angebrachten jeweiligen Lichtleiter (23) umfasst, um von jeder Leuchtdiode erzeugtes Licht zu einem Inneren des gekrümmten hinteren Gehäuses zu leiten.
     
    5. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach Anspruch 4, wobei jeder Lichtleiter einen parabolischen Reflektor mit einer parabolischen reflektierenden Oberfläche umfasst.
     
    6. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach Anspruch 4, wobei jeder Lichtleiter eine optische Linse umfasst.
     
    7. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, weiter umfassend eine reflektierende Schicht (61), die auf dem Inneren des gekrümmten hinteren Gehäuses angeordnet ist, um das von der Lichtquelleinheit gestrahlte Licht zu reflektieren.
     
    8. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, weiter umfassend eine Diffusionsplatte (30), die zwischen dem gekrümmten Anzeigefeld und dem gekrümmten hinteren Gehäuse angeordnet ist und von dem gekrümmten hinteren Gehäuse beabstandet ist.
     
    9. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach Anspruch 8, wobei die Diffusionsplatte mit einem umgekehrten Prismenmuster an ihrer Rückseite versehen ist.
     
    10. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach Anspruch 8 oder 9, weiter umfassend eine Diffusionsfolie (31), die an der Vorderseite der Diffusionsplatte angeordnet ist, um Licht, das durch die Diffusionsplatte gelangt ist, zu diffundieren, sodass das diffundierte Licht zum gekrümmten Anzeigefeld übertragen wird.
     
    11. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, weiter umfassend eine Zusatzlichtquelleneinheit (70), die an einem mittleren Abschnitt des Inneren des hinteren Gehäuses angeordnet ist.
     
    12. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, weiter umfassend eine Halterung (40), um einen Abstand zwischen dem gekrümmten Anzeigefeld und dem gekrümmten hinteren Gehäuse aufrechtzuerhalten.
     
    13. Gekrümmte Anzeigevorrichtung nach Anspruch 12, weiter umfassend ein vorderes Gehäuse (50), das an der Vorderseite der Halterung angebracht ist, um einen verbundenen Zustand zwischen dem gekrümmten Anzeigefeld und der Halterung aufrechtzuerhalten.
     


    Revendications

    1. Appareil d'affichage incurvé (1) comprenant :

    un écran incurvé (10) ;

    un boîtier arrière incurvé (60) disposé à l'arrière de l'écran incurvé et espacé de l'écran incurvé, le boîtier arrière incurvé (60) comportant une partie arrière (60a) et une partie latérale arrière (60b) qui s'étend orthogonalement depuis la périphérie de la partie arrière (60a) en direction de l'écran incurvé (10) ; et

    un ensemble source de lumière (20) disposé sur un côté intérieur de la partie latérale arrière (60b) du boîtier arrière incurvé et adapté pour rayonner de la lumière vers le boîtier arrière incurvé,

    le boîtier arrière incurvé étant adapté pour réfléchir la lumière rayonnée depuis l'ensemble source de lumière vers l'écran incurvé,

    caractérisé en ce que l'appareil d'affichage incurvé ne comprend pas de plaque guide de lumière à éclairage par les bords pour guider la lumière de l'ensemble source de lumière vers l'écran incurvé, et

    en ce que le boîtier arrière incurvé est pourvu d'un motif diffuseur (61a), disposé à l'intérieur dudit boîtier, pour diffuser la lumière rayonnée depuis l'ensemble source de lumière, le motif diffuseur étant formé seulement dans des portions du boîtier arrière incurvé où la lumière rayonnée dans une direction perpendiculaire à la partie latérale arrière (60b) du boîtier arrière frappe le boîtier arrière incurvé.


     
    2. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon la revendication 1, dans lequel le boîtier arrière incurvé possède une courbure telle que des côtés opposés du boîtier arrière incurvé sont symétriques par rapport au milieu du boîtier arrière incurvé.
     
    3. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon la revendication 1 ou la revendication 2, dans lequel l'ensemble source de lumière comprend un substrat (21) et une pluralité de diodes électroluminescentes (22) disposées à intervalles sur le substrat dans une direction longitudinale dudit substrat.
     
    4. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon la revendication 3, dans lequel l'ensemble source de lumière comprend en outre un guide de lumière (23) respectif monté au niveau de chaque diode électroluminescente (22) afin de guider la lumière générée par chaque diode électroluminescente vers l'intérieur du boîtier arrière incurvé.
     
    5. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon la revendication 4, dans lequel chaque guide de lumière comprend un réflecteur parabolique ayant une surface réfléchissante parabolique.
     
    6. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon la revendication 4, dans lequel chaque guide de lumière comprend une lentille optique.
     
    7. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, comprenant en outre une couche réfléchissante (61) disposée sur l'intérieur du boîtier arrière incurvé afin de réfléchir la lumière rayonnée depuis l'ensemble source de lumière.
     
    8. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, comprenant en outre une plaque diffusive (30) disposée entre l'écran incurvé et le boîtier arrière incurvé et espacée du boîtier arrière incurvé.
     
    9. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon la revendication 8, dans lequel la plaque diffusive est pourvue sur sa face arrière d'un motif du type à prismes inversés.
     
    10. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon la revendication 8 ou la revendication 9, comprenant en outre une feuille diffusive (31) disposée sur la face avant de la plaque diffusive afin de diffuser la lumière qui a traversé la plaque diffusive, de telle façon que la lumière diffusée est transmise à l'écran incurvé.
     
    11. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, comprenant en outre un ensemble source de lumière auxiliaire (70) disposé dans une portion médiane de l'intérieur du boîtier arrière.
     
    12. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, comprenant en outre un support (40) afin de maintenir un écartement entre l'écran incurvé et le boîtier arrière incurvé.
     
    13. Appareil d'affichage incurvé selon la revendication 12, comprenant en outre un boîtier avant (50) monté à l'avant du support afin de maintenir un état connecté entre l'écran incurvé et le support.
