    Description

    TECHNICAL FIELD



    [0001] This instant specification relates to a touchscreen user interface for presenting media.

    BACKGROUND



    [0002] A touchscreen is an input device layered on top of a visual display of a computing device. A user can make an input or control the computing device using single-touch or multi-touch gestures by contacting the touchscreen with a special stylus/pen or one or more fingers. Generally, the user can use the touchscreen to react to what is displayed and to control how it is displayed, for example, by panning around or zooming into what is being displayed.

    [0003] Document US 2012/200574 A1 discloses a graphical user interface for a video player. The user can change between different views of the player using touch gestures, e.g. up or down swipe can provide the previous or the next video and a horizontal drag can extend or collapse regions with additional information about the displayed video.

    [0004] Document EP 2631773 A2 discloses a graphic user interface for a video player on a mobile terminal. Several views of the player can be represented providing full-screen as well as a representation of the main video being displayed together with the play-list comprising next and previous videos.

    SUMMARY



    [0005] The present invention provides a solution for the mentioned problems according to the independent claims. Preferred embodiments are provided by the dependent claims. In one aspect, a method includes providing, by a processing device, a mid state of a touchscreen user interface for presentation on a touchscreen device. The mid state presents a first video from a queue of videos and portions of a previous video or a next video from the queue of the videos. Receipt of a first gestural input in a first direction during presentation of the mid state causes the next video to be presented in the mid state. Receipt of a second gestural input in a second direction opposite to the first direction during presentation of the mid state causes the previous video to be presented in the mid state. The method further includes providing a fullscreen state of the touchscreen user interface for presentation on the touchscreen device in response to receipt of a third gestural input during presentation of the mid state. The third gestural input is in a different direction than the first direction and the second direction or the third gestural input is of a different type than the first gestural input and the second gestural input. The fullscreen state expands the first video to fit the touchscreen user interface without presentation of the portions of the previous video or the next video. Receipt of a fourth gestural input during presentation of the fullscreen state causes the mid state to be presented again. The fourth gestural input has an opposite character as the third gestural input. Receipt of the first gestural input during presentation of the fullscreen state causes the next video to be presented in the fullscreen state. Receipt of the second gestural input during presentation of the fullscreen state causes the previous video to be presented in the fullscreen state. The method further includes providing a miniplayer state of the touchscreen user interface for presentation on the touchscreen device in response to receipt of the third gestural input during presentation of the fullscreen state. The miniplayer state shrinks the first video to fit a list of videos for a user account within the touchscreen user interface. Receipt of the fourth gestural input during presentation of the miniplayer state causes the fullscreen state to be presented again.

    DETAILED DESCRIPTION



    [0013] This document describes systems and techniques for presenting media, such as videos, images, or audio, using a touchscreen user interface. A user may make gestural inputs of a first type within the touchscreen user interface, such as vertical swipes up and down, horizontal swipes left and right, single tap and double tap, pinch and spread, short press and long press, or light press and hard press to switch the interface between alternate viewing states. A user may make gestural inputs of a second type in a different direction or having a different character than the first type, such as horizontal swipes rather than vertical swipes or swipes rather than pinching, tapping, or pressing to navigate within a queue or set of media. The states include a mid state for the user interface that presents a first media along with portions of a previous media or a next media. The states also include a fullscreen state of the user interface that expands the first media to fit the space that is available within the touchscreen user interface. In addition, the states include a miniplayer state of the user interface that shrinks the media to a picture-in-picture style viewing state to provide space for searching or browsing for additional media.

    [0014] The systems and techniques described here may provide one or more of the following advantages. First, the systems and techniques can provide for navigating through a queue of media more quickly by allowing a user to see portions of the queue. Second, the systems and techniques can provide for navigating through a queue of media more quickly by allowing a user to swipe to advance and review next and previous videos within a set. Third, the systems and techniques can make more efficient use of the space that is available on the touchscreen than a system that does not have the three states. This may be accomplished by reducing the number and/or types of user inputs needed to switch between a mid state for exploring a set of media, discussing media, or exploring metadata for the media; a fullscreen state for extended viewing; and a miniplayer state suited for discovering additional content. The systems and techniques therefore provide an interface that allows a user to manage the task of searching and retrieving media in a more efficient manner.

    [0015] FIG. 1A is a schematic diagram that shows an example of a system 100 for presenting media using a touchscreen user interface. The system 100 includes a touchscreen device 102 in communication with a server system 104 over a network 106. The network 106 may include one or more computer devices, such as one or more of the computer devices that make up the Internet.

    [0016] The touchscreen device 102 may be, for example, a tablet computer device. Alternatively, the touchscreen device 102 may be a mobile phone, a phablet, or a desktop touchscreen device. The touchscreen device 102 includes a touchscreen to display a touchscreen user interface 108a through which to receive touch-based inputs from a user.

For example, the server system 104 may provide the list of videos 108b to the touchscreen device 102 in response to receiving a search request from the touchscreen device 102 for videos related to one or more search terms. The server system 104 may include or have access to an index of videos and corresponding video information. The server system 104 may identify one or more videos for inclusion in the list of videos 108b that are responsive to the search request based on a search of the index.

In some implementations, the server system 104 ensures that a list of videos is provided to the touchscreen device 102, such as by performing a search for videos, retrieving videos from a playlist, retrieving videos from a feed for a channel, or generating suggestions for videos. For example, a user of the touchscreen device 102 may input a search for videos, select a playlist of videos, or select a channel for videos. The server system 104 then provides the list of videos 108b to the touchscreen device 102 in response to the search input, the playlist/channel selection, or automatically as a suggestion.

    [0034] FIG. 1B is a block diagram that shows an example of a system 120 that includes a content sharing platform 126 for presenting media using a touchscreen user interface. The content sharing platform 126 is in communication with multiple client devices 122a-z, a data store 124, and a server 128 over a network 130. In one implementation, the network 130 may include a public network (e.g., the Internet), a private network (e.g., a local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN)), a wired network (e.g., Ethernet network), a wireless network (e.g., an 802.11 network or a Wi-Fi network), a cellular network (e.g., a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network), routers, hubs, switches, server computers, and/or a combination thereof. In one implementation, the data store 124 may be a memory (e.g., random access memory), a cache, a drive (e.g., a hard drive), a flash drive, a database system, or another type of component or device capable of storing data. The data store 124 may also include multiple storage components (e.g., multiple drives or multiple databases) that may also span multiple computing devices (e.g., multiple server computers).

    [0035] The client devices 122a-z may each include computing devices such as personal computers (PCs), laptops, mobile phones, smart phones, tablet computers, network connected televisions, netbook computers etc. In some implementations, the client devices 122a-z may also be referred to as "user devices." Each of the client devices 122a-z includes a media viewer 132 or player. In one implementation, the media viewer 132 may be an application that allows users to view content, such as images, videos (e.g., paid video content), web pages, documents, etc. For example, the media viewer 132 may be a web browser that can access, retrieve, present, and/or navigate content (e.g., web pages such as Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) pages, digital media items or content items, etc.) served by a web server. The media viewer 132 may render, display, and/or present the content (e.g., a web page, a media viewer) to a user. The media viewer 132 may also display an embedded media player (e.g., a Flash® player or an HTML5 player) that is embedded in a web page (e.g., a web page that may provide information about a product sold by an online merchant). In another example, the media viewer 132 may be a standalone application that allows users to view digital media items (e.g., digital videos, digital images, electronic books, etc.).

For example, the media viewer 132 may be an embedded media player that is embedded in a web page provided by the content sharing platform 126.     1. A method for presenting videos using a touchscreen user interface wherein the method comprises:

    providing (302), by a processing device, a mid state (110a) of the touchscreen user interface (200b) for presentation on a touchscreen device (102), wherein the mid state presents a first video (108d) from a queue of videos (108b) in a video player (216) and displays a portion (218) of a previous video and a portion (220) of a next video from the queue of the videos, wherein receipt of a first gestural input (312) in a first direction during presentation of the mid state causes (314) the next video to be presented in the video player of the mid state, and wherein receipt of a second gestural input (316) in a second direction opposite to the first direction during presentation of the mid state causes (318) the previous video to be presented in the video player of the mid state;

    providing (306) a fullscreen state (110b) of the touchscreen user interface for presentation on the touchscreen device in response to receipt of a third gestural input (258, 304) during presentation of the mid state, wherein the third gestural input is in a different direction than the first direction and the second direction or the third gestural input is of a different type than the first gestural input and the second gestural input, wherein the fullscreen state expands the first video and the video player to fit the touchscreen user interface without displaying the portion of the previous video and the portion of the next video, wherein receipt of a fourth gestural input (262, 308) during presentation of the fullscreen state causes (310) the mid state to be presented again, wherein the fourth gestural input has an opposite character as the third gestural input, wherein receipt of the first gestural input during presentation of the fullscreen state causes the next video to be presented in the video player of the fullscreen state, and wherein receipt of the second gestural input during presentation of the fullscreen state causes the previous video to be presented in the video player of the fullscreen state; and

    providing (306) a miniplayer state (110c) of the touchscreen user interface for presentation on the touchscreen device in response to receipt of the third gestural input (264) during presentation of the fullscreen state, wherein the miniplayer state shrinks the first video and the video player to fit a list of videos for a user account within the touchscreen user interface, wherein receipt of the fourth gestural input (270) during presentation of the miniplayer state causes (310) the fullscreen state to be presented again, wherein a size of the first video and the video player in the miniplayer state is smaller than a size of the first video and the video player in the mid state, and wherein a size of the first video and the video player in the fullscreen state is larger than the size of the first video and the video player in the mid state.


     
    2. The method of claim 1, wherein the mid state further presents a list of suggested videos for the first video, and wherein the method further comprises:

    receiving a user selection of a second video among the list of suggested videos for the first video; and

    adding the second video to the queue in response to receipt of the user selection.


     
    3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

    replacing the first video with the second video in the mid state in response to receipt of the user selection; and

    replacing the portion of the previous video with a portion of the first video in the mid state in response to receipt of the user selection.


     
    4. The method of any preceding claim, wherein the mid state further presents metadata for the first video, and wherein the method further comprises:
    sliding the metadata vertically down the touchscreen user interface as the mid state transitions to the fullscreen state without changing a size of the metadata.
     
    5. The method of any preceding claim, further comprising:
    automatically playing the videos in the queue.
     
    6. The method of any preceding claim, further comprising:
    automatically adding at least one suggested video to the queue after a last video in the queue.
     
    7. The method of any preceding claim, further comprising:

    receiving a user selection of a queue control; and

    replacing the portion of the previous video and the portion of the next video in the mid state with a list of the videos in the queue in response to receipt of the user selection.


     
    8. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon for presenting videos using a touchscreen user interface characterized in that, when executed by a processing device, the instructions cause the processing device to carry out a method according to any preceding claim.
     
    9. A system for presenting videos using a touchscreen user interface characterized in that the system comprises:

    a memory to store instructions for the touchscreen user interface; and

    a processing device to execute the instructions to carry out a method according to any one of claims 1 to 7.


     


    Ansprüche

    1. Verfahren zum Präsentieren von Videos unter Verwendung einer Berührungsbildschirm-Benutzerschnittstelle, wobei das Verfahren Folgendes beinhaltet:

    Bereitstellen (302), durch eine Verarbeitungsvorrichtung, eines Mittelzustandes (110a) der Berührungsbildschirm-Benutzerschnittstelle (200b) zum Darstellen auf einer Berührungsbildschirmvorrichtung (102), wobei der Mittelzustand ein erstes Video (108d) aus einer Warteschlange von Videos (108b) in einem Videoplayer (216) präsentiert und einen Teil (218) eines vorherigen Videos und einen Teil (220) eines nächsten Videos aus der Warteschlange von Videos anzeigt, wobei ein Empfang einer ersten Gesteneingabe (312) in eine erste Richtung im Zuge der Präsentation des Mittelzustandes das nächste Video dazu veranlasst (314), in dem Videoplayer im Mittelzustand präsentiert zu werden, und wobei ein Empfang einer zweiten Gesteneingabe (316) in eine zweite Richtung, welche der ersten Richtung abgewandt ist, im Zuge der Präsentation des Mittelzustandes das vorige Video dazu veranlasst (318), in dem Videoplayer des Mittelzustandes präsentiert zu werden;

    Bereitstellen (306) eines Vollbildschirmzustandes (110b) der Berührungsbildschirm-Benutzerschnittstelle zum Präsentieren auf der Berührungsbildschirmvorrichtung, in Reaktion auf den Empfang einer dritten Gesteneingabe (258, 304) im Zuge der Präsentation des Mittelzustandes, wobei die dritte Gesteneingabe in eine Richtung erfolgt, welche sich von der ersten Richtung und von der zweiten Richtung unterscheidet, oder wobei die dritte Gesteneingabe eine Eingabe unterschiedlicher Art als die erste Gesteneingabe und die zweite Gesteneingabe ist, wobei der Vollbildschirmzustand das erste Video und den Videoplayer expandiert, um in die Berührungsbildschirm-Benutzerschnittstelle zu passen, ohne den Teil des vorherigen Videos und den Teil des nächsten Videos anzuzeigen, wobei der Empfang einer vierten Gesteneingabe (262, 308) im Zuge der Präsentation des Vollbildschirmzustandes den Mittelzustand dazu veranlasst (310), wiederum präsentiert zu werden, wobei die vierte Gesteneingabe gegensätzlich zur dritten Gesteneingabe geartet ist, wobei der Empfang der ersten Gesteneingabe das nächste Video dazu veranlasst, in dem Videoplayer des Vollbildschirmzustandes präsentiert zu werden, und wobei der Empfang der zweiten Gesteneingabe im Zuge der Präsentation des Vollbildschirmzustandes das vorherige Video dazu veranlasst, in dem Videoplayer des Vollbildschirmzustandes präsentiert zu werden; und

    Bereitstellen (306) eines Miniplayerzustandes (110c) der Berührungsbildschirm-Benutzerschnittstelle zum Präsentieren auf der Berührungsbildschirmvorrichtung, in Reaktion auf den Empfang der dritten Gesteneingabe (264) im Zuge der Präsentation des Vollbildschirmzustandes, wobei der Miniplayerzustand das erste Video und den Videoplayer verkleinert, um in eine Video-Liste für ein Benutzerkonto innerhalb der Berührungsbildschirm-Benutzerschnittstelle zu passen, wobei der Empfang der vierten Gesteneingabe (270) im Zuge der Präsentation des Miniplayerzustandes den Vollbildschirmzustand dazu veranlasst (310), wiederum präsentiert zu werden, wobei eine Größe des ersten Videos und des Videoplayers in dem Miniplayerzustand kleiner ist als die Größe des ersten Videos und des Videoplayers in dem Mittelzustand, und wobei eine Größe des ersten Videos und des Videoplayers in dem Vollbildschirmzustand größer ist als die Größe des ersten Videos und des Videoplayers in dem Mittelzustand.


     
    2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, bei welchem der Mittelzustand zusätzlich eine Liste von vorgeschlagenen Videos für das erste Video präsentiert, und wobei das Verfahren zudem Folgendes beinhaltet:

    Empfangen einer Benutzerauswahl eines zweiten Videos aus der Liste von vorgeschlagenen Videos für das erste Video; und

    Hinzufügen des zweiten Videos zur Warteschlange in Reaktion auf den Empfang der Benutzerauswahl.


     
    3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 2, zudem beinhaltend:

    Ersetzen des ersten Videos durch das zweite Video in dem Mittelzustand in Reaktion auf den Empfang der Benutzerauswahl; und

    Ersetzen des Teils des vorherigen Videos mit einem Teil des ersten Videos in dem Mittelzustand in Reaktion auf den Empfang der Benutzerauswahl.


     
    4. Verfahren nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, bei welchem der Mittelzustand zusätzlich Metadaten für das erste Video präsentiert, und wobei das Verfahren zudem Folgendes beinhaltet:
    Verschieben der Metadaten vertikal nach unten an der Berührungsbildschirm-Benutzerschnittstelle, während der Mittelzustand zum Vollbildschirmzustand übergeht, ohne eine Größe der Metadaten zu verändern.
     
    5. Verfahren nach einem der vorherigen Ansprüche, zudem beinhaltend:
    automatisches Abspielen der Videos in der Warteschlange.
     
    6. Verfahren nach einem der vorherigen Ansprüche, zudem beinhaltend:
    automatisches Hinzufügen mindestens eines vorgeschlagenen Videos zu der Warteschlange nach einem letzten Video in der Warteschlange.
     
    7. Verfahren nach einem der vorherigen Ansprüche, zudem beinhaltend:

    Empfangen einer Benutzerauswahl von einer Warteschlangen-Steuerung; und

    Ersetzen des Teils des vorherigen Videos und des Teils des nächsten Videos in dem Mittelzustand durch eine Liste von Videos in der Warteschlange in Reaktion auf den Empfang der Benutzerauswahl.


     
    8. Nicht transientes, computerlesbares Medium, auf welchem Anweisungen zum Präsentieren von Videos unter Verwendung einer Berührungsbildschirm-Benutzerschnittstelle gespeichert sind, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass, wenn sie durch eine Verarbeitungsvorrichtung ausgeführt werden, die Anweisungen die Verarbeitungsvorrichtung dazu veranlassen, ein Verfahren nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche auszuführen.
     
    9. System zum Präsentieren von Videos unter Verwendung einer Berührungsbildschirm-Benutzerschnittstelle, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das System Folgendes beinhaltet:

    einen Speicher zum Speichern von Anweisungen für die Berührungsbildschirm-Benutzerschnittstelle; und

    eine Verarbeitungsvorrichtung zum Ausführen der Anweisungen zum Ausführen eines Verfahrens nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7.

    la fourniture (306) d'un état de plein écran (110b) de l'interface utilisateur à écran tactile pour sa présentation sur le dispositif à écran tactile en réponse à la réception d'une troisième entrée gestuelle (258, 304) pendant la présentation de l'état intermédiaire, dans lequel la troisième entrée gestuelle est dans une direction différente de la première direction et de la seconde direction ou la troisième entrée gestuelle est d'un type différent de ceux de la première entrée gestuelle et de la deuxième entrée gestuelle, dans lequel l'état de plein écran étend la première vidéo et le lecteur de vidéos pour leur ajustement par rapport à l'interface utilisateur à écran tactile sans afficher la partie de la vidéo précédente et la partie de la vidéo suivante, dans lequel la réception d'une quatrième entrée gestuelle (262, 308) pendant la présentation de l'état de plein écran a pour effet (310) que l'état intermédiaire est présenté à nouveau, dans lequel la quatrième entrée gestuelle présente une nature opposée à celle de la troisième entrée gestuelle, dans lequel la réception de la première entrée gestuelle pendant la présentation de l'état de plein écran a pour effet que la vidéo suivante est présentée dans le lecteur de vidéos de l'état de plein écran, et dans lequel la réception de la deuxième entrée gestuelle pendant la présentation de l'état de plein écran a pour effet que la vidéo précédente est présentée dans le lecteur de vidéos de l'état de plein écran ; et

    la fourniture (306) d'un état de mini-lecteur (110c) de l'interface utilisateur à écran tactile pour sa présentation sur le dispositif à écran tactile en réponse à la réception de la troisième entrée gestuelle (264) pendant la présentation de l'état de plein écran, dans lequel l'état de mini-lecteur rétrécit la première vidéo et le lecteur de vidéos pour leur ajustement par rapport à une liste de vidéos pour un compte d'utilisateur à l'intérieur de l'interface utilisateur à écran tactile, dans lequel la réception de la quatrième entrée gestuelle (270) pendant la présentation de l'état de mini-lecteur a pour effet (310) que l'état de plein écran est présenté à nouveau, dans lequel une dimension de la première vidéo et du lecteur de vidéos dans l'état de mini-lecteur est plus petite qu'une dimension de la première vidéo et du lecteur de vidéos dans l'état intermédiaire, et dans lequel une dimension de la première vidéo et du lecteur de vidéos dans l'état de plein écran est plus grande que la dimension de la première vidéo et du lecteur de vidéos dans l'état intermédiaire.


     
    2. Procédé selon la revendication 1, dans lequel l'état intermédiaire présente en outre une liste de vidéos suggérées pour la première vidéo, et dans lequel le procédé comprend en outre :

    la réception d'une sélection par utilisateur d'une seconde vidéo parmi la liste de vidéos suggérées pour la première vidéo ; et

    l'ajout de la seconde vidéo dans la file d'attente en réponse à la réception de la sélection par utilisateur.


     
    3. Procédé selon la revendication 2, comprenant en outre :

    le remplacement de la première vidéo par la seconde vidéo dans l'état intermédiaire en réponse à la réception de la sélection par utilisateur ; et

    le remplacement de la partie de la vidéo précédente par une partie de la première vidéo dans l'état intermédiaire en réponse à la réception de la sélection par utilisateur.


     
    4. Procédé selon l'une quelconque des revendications qui précèdent, dans lequel l'état intermédiaire présente en outre des métadonnées pour la première vidéo, et dans lequel le procédé comprend en outre :
    le glissement des métadonnées verticalement vers le bas de l'interface utilisateur à écran tactile lorsque l'état intermédiaire est en cours de transition vers l'état de plein écran sans modifier une dimension des métadonnées.
     
    5. Procédé selon l'une quelconque des revendications qui précèdent, comprenant en outre :
    la lecture automatique des vidéos dans la file d'attente.
     
    6. Procédé selon l'une quelconque des revendications qui précèdent, comprenant en outre :
    l'ajout automatique d'au moins une vidéo suggérée à l'intérieur de la file d'attente après une dernière vidéo dans la file d'attente.
     
    7. Procédé selon l'une quelconque des revendications qui précèdent, comprenant en outre :

    la réception d'une sélection par utilisateur d'une commande de file d'attente ; et

    le remplacement de la partie de la vidéo précédente et de la partie de la vidéo suivante dans l'état intermédiaire par une liste des vidéos dans la file d'attente en réponse à la réception de la sélection par utilisateur.


     
    8. Support non transitoire pouvant être lu par un ordinateur et comportant, stockées en son sein, des instructions pour présenter des vidéos en utilisant une interface utilisateur à écran tactile, caractérisé en ce que, lorsqu'elles sont exécutées par un dispositif de traitement, les instructions ont pour effet que le dispositif de traitement met en œuvre un procédé selon l'une quelconque des revendications qui précèdent.
     
    9. Système pour présenter des vidéos en utilisant une interface utilisateur à écran tactile, caractérisé en ce que le système comprend :

    une mémoire pour stocker des instructions pour l'interface utilisateur à écran tactile ; et

    un dispositif de traitement pour exécuter les instructions afin de mettre en œuvre un procédé selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 7.
