    Description


    [0001] This invention relates to rifles for military and civilian sporting use.

    Background



    [0002] Modern sporting rifles as well as military rifles and carbines must be robust for reliable operation, and lightweight to permit carry without excessive fatigue. Significant reduction in rifle weight has been previously achieved by replacing wood with polymer material for components such as the shoulder stock and fore stock. Such designs have been successful because the use of polymer material for these elements does not compromise the robustness or reliable operation of modern firearms.

    [0003] However, components such as the receiver and its associated assemblies such as the bolt carrier and barrel still account for a significant portion of the weight of a firearm, as it has not been thought feasible to substitute polymer for such parts which experience heat, pressure and wear from reciprocating motion. To meet the harsh requirements of operation many receiver designs are machined from a solid aluminum billet, and thus represent, in addition to significant weight, a significant production cost, as the machining is complex and constrained by tight tolerance requirements. There is clearly a need to further reduce rifle weight and simplify production without compromising the performance of the modern combat or sporting rifle.

    [0004] The US 20150135573 A1 discloses a combination metal/polymer upper receiver for use in a rifle, with the upper receiver attachable to a lower receiver and to a barrel. The upper receiver comprises a polymeric upper receiver housing defining a chamber. The polymeric upper receiver housing is adapted to engage with mounting features on the lower receiver to attach a lower receiver to the upper receiver at a first connection. A metal insert is secured within the polymeric upper receiver housing and is adapted to engage the barrel. The meta! insert further includes an extended member embedded within the polymeric upper receiver housing such that the extended member receives the impact from a holt carrier group residing within the chamber. An optional metal gas tube channel is located along an upper internal surface of the polymeric upper receiver housing and extends the length of the polymeric upper receiver housing.

    Summary



    [0005] The invention concerns a bearing for an upper receiver of a firearm defined by the features of claim 1 and a corresponding upper receiver defined by the features of claim 8.

    [0006] By way of example a fourth opening in the sidewall receives the fire control mechanism or the magazine. In an example embodiment, the metal tube has a buffer tube radius for attaching a buffer tube to the metal tube. In a specific example the second opening is positioned diametrically opposite to the third opening. In a further specific example the second opening is positioned diametrically opposite to the fourth opening. In another example the first opening is positioned angularly offset from the second opening about a longitudinal axis of the metal tube. In an example embodiment the second opening comprises a slot extending lengthwise along the metal tube, one end of the slot being open. In a further example the third and fourth openings are contiguous with one another. In another example the fourth opening is wider than the third opening.

    [0007] By way of example one end of the metal tube comprises screw threads. In a particular example the screw threads are positioned on the inner surface. In another example the screw threads are positioned on an outer surface of the metal tube. An example embodiment further comprises an aperture in the sidewall for permitting engagement between the bolt carrier and a forward assist button.

    [0008] The invention also encompasses a first opening, positioned in the polymer shroud overlying the first opening in the sidewall and defining together with said opening the ejector port.

    [0009] By way of example the invention further comprises a second opening in the polymer shroud overlying the second opening in the sidewall and positioned together with said second opening in said sidewall to permit engagement between the bolt carrier and the charging handle.

    [0010] Another example embodiment comprises a rail mounted on the shroud. The rail and extends lengthwise along the metal tube and comprises a plurality of ribs oriented transversely to a longitudinal axis of the tube. Another example further comprises a housing extending from the shroud for receiving a forward assist button. In this example the metal tube comprises an aperture aligned with the housing for permitting engagement between the bolt carrier and the forward assist button.

    [0011] By way of example the invention further comprises first and second lugs positioned at opposite ends of the shroud for attaching the shroud to a lower receiver. Another example embodiment of the invention comprises a buffer tube radius for attaching a buffer tube to the metal tube.

    Detailed Description



    [0014] Figure 1 depicts an example embodiment of a rifle 10 according to the invention. Rifle 10 may be capable of automatic or semi-automatic operation and comprises a lower receiver 12 (see also Figure 2) which houses a fire control mechanism 14 (see also Figure 4) and has a magazine well 16 which receives an ammunition magazine 18. An upper receiver 20 (see also Figure 3) is attached to the lower receiver 12. The upper receiver houses a charging handle 22, a bolt carrier 24 (see also Figure 4) and may also house a forward assist button 26.

    [0015] During operation of the rifle 10, the bolt carrier 24 (see Figure 4) reciprocates within the upper receiver 20 between "battery", a position wherein the bolt 28 on the bolt carrier 24 is engaged with the breech of barrel 30 (see Figure 1A), and an open position, where the bolt 28 is disengaged from the breech and the bolt carrier 24 is retracted away from the breech. In battery, a round chambered in the breech may be discharged. Upon discharge, the bolt carrier 24 moves from battery to the open position, extracting and ejecting the spent cartridge and resetting the fire control mechanism 14 along the way. Motion of the bolt carrier 24 from battery to the open position also compresses a return spring (not shown) acting on the bolt carrier. As the bolt carrier 24 moves back into battery (driven by the return spring) it strips a round from the magazine 18 and chambers it in the breech of barrel 30 completing the cycle. Energy for moving the bolt carrier 24 through this cycle (in either automatic or semi-automatic operation) is provided by the ammunition itself using one of at least three well understood modes of operation commonly known as "recoil", "blow-back", and "gas" operation. A round is initially chambered and the fire control mechanism 14 is initially set by drawing and releasing the charging handle 22, which draws the bolt carrier 24 from battery to the open position and permits the bolt carrier to move back into battery, driven by the aforementioned return spring (not shown).

    [0016] Thus the upper receiver 20 must support the bolt carrier 24 as it moves between battery and the open position but also allow the various components, including the fire control mechanism 14, the magazine 18, the charging handle 22, and the forward assist button 26 (when present) to interact with the bolt carrier. The upper receiver 20 must also provide an ejection port 32 to permit ejection of the spent cartridge. In the upper receiver 20 according to the invention the bolt carrier 24 is supported by a bearing 34, shown in Figures 4-6. Bearing 34 comprises a metal tube 36, which may be formed from aluminum, steel or other durable metals. Tube 36 in this example has a round cross section defined by a sidewall 38. Sidewall 38 also defines an inner surface 40 which supports the bolt carrier 24 in its reciprocal motion between battery and the open position. Tube 36 is sized in both length and inner diameter so that tilting of the bolt carrier 24 relative to the longitudinal axis 52 of tube 36 is mitigated to ensure smooth motion during operation for reliability.

    [0017] As shown in Figures 4 and 5, an ejector port 42 is provided within the sidewall 38 to permit ejection of spent cartridges from the receiver. An aperture 44 is also provided within the sidewall 38 to permit the forward assist button 26 to engage the bolt carrier 24 and drive it into battery when the return spring fails to do so. Figure 5 illustrates yet another opening 46 in the sidewall 38 which is positioned to permit the charging handle 22 to engage the bolt carrier 24. Figure 6 illustrates additional openings 48 and 50. Opening 48 permits at least a portion of the fire control mechanism 14 (see Figure 4) to extend into the tube 36 and interact with the bolt carrier 24. Opening 50 permits the magazine 18 to extend into the tube 36 so that rounds can be stripped and chambered as the bolt carrier 24 moves into battery.

    [0018] As shown by way of example in Figures 5 and 6, the opening 46 for charging handle 22 is diametrically opposite to the openings 48 and 50 for the fire control mechanism 14 and the magazine 18. This configuration is dictated by the layout of the rifle 10 shown in Figure 1, wherein the charging handle 22 is positioned on the upper receiver 20 and substantially aligned with the fire control mechanism 14 and the magazine well 16 which receives the magazine 18, all of which are housed in the lower receiver 12. Ejector port 42 (see Figures 4 and 5) is angularly offset from the charging handle opening 46 about the longitudinal axis 52 of the tube 36 to direct the spent cartridges to the right side of the rifle 10. Other arrangements of the openings in tube 36 are of course feasible to accommodate other rifle configurations. The openings are further shaped and dimensioned commensurate with their respective functions. To this end, opening 46 in this example comprises an elongate slot to accommodate the necessary range of motion of the charging handle 22 and bolt carrier 24 along the tube 36. In this example one end 46a of the slot formed by opening 46 is open. Similarly, openings 48 and 50 are sized to accommodate the fire control mechanism and magazine, respectively, opening 50 being wider than opening 48 as a result. The openings 48 and 50 may be contiguous with one another as shown.

    [0019] The simplicity of the bearing 34 allows the various openings to be conveniently formed by laser machining techniques. Traditional machining techniques are of course also feasible.

    [0020] As further shown in Figure 1A, tube 36 may have screw threads 54 positioned at the end which interfaces with the barrel 30 (see also Figure 1). Threads 54 may be on the inner surface 40 of the tube 36 (shown) or on the outer surface 56. Additionally, as shown in Figure 6, a buffer tube radius 56 may also be part of tube 36 for accommodating a buffer tube (not shown), which contains the return spring (not shown).

    [0021] Another part of the upper receiver according to the invention is the polymer shroud 58, an example being shown in Figure 4. Shroud 58 is formed from a polymer such as fiber reinforce nylon which, as shown in Figures 3 and 7, is injection molded around a tube 36 that has already been machined and finished. In production a machined, finished tube 36 is placed in a mold for the upper shroud, the mold is closed, and the polymer is injected into the mold in a co-molding process that joins shroud and tube. Injection molding is advantageous because it permits features having complex geometries to be incorporated into the upper receiver while avoiding costly and time consuming machining. The example shroud 58 includes a so-called "Picatinny" rail 60 that extends lengthwise along the tube 36 and has a plurality of transverse ribs 62. Also shown in Figure 3 are a housing 64 for the forward assist button 26 and an outwardly projecting surface 66 adjacent to the ejector port 42 for deflecting ejected cartridges. Lugs 68 for attaching the upper receiver 20 to the lower receiver 12 may also be injection molded as part of shroud 58.

    [0022] Injection molding also allows openings to be formed in the shroud 58 that correspond to openings in the tube 36. As shown in Figures 3 and 4, opening 70 in shroud 58 aligns with the ejector port opening 32 in the tube 36; opening 72 in the shroud aligns with the opening 46 for the charging handle 22; and opening 74 aligns with aperture 44 for the forward assist button 26. In the example shroud 58 the region between the lugs 68 is substantially open to permit the fire control mechanism 14 and the magazine 18 to be received within respective openings 48 and 50 in the sidewall 38 of tube 36 when the upper receiver 20 is mounted on the lower receiver 12 and the magazine 18 is inserted into magazine well 16.

    [0023] A rifle having a polymer upper receiver co-molded with a tube comprising a bearing for supporting and guiding a bolt carrier provides numerous advantages over traditional rifles wherein the receiver is machined from a billet. Such rifles will have reduced weight and more economical and rapid production without sacrificing reliability or robustness.


    Claims

    1. A bearing (34) of an upper receiver (20) of a firearm having a charging handle (22), a fire control mechanism (14), a magazine (18) and an upper receiver (20) comprising a polymer shroud (58), said bearing (34) being suitable for use with a bolt carrier (24) of said firearm, said bearing (34) comprising:

    a metal tube (36) configured to be positioned within said upper receiver (20), said polymer shroud (58) being configured to surround at least a portion of said metal tube (36), said metal tube (36) having a sidewall (38) defining an inner surface (40) configured to support said bolt carrier (24) and motion thereof between an open position and a battery position;

    a first opening (32) in said sidewall (38) defining an ejector port (42);

    a second opening (46) in said sidewall (38) positioned to permit engagement between said bolt carrier (24) and said charging handle (22);

    a third opening (48) in said sidewall (38) for receiving said fire control mechanism (14) or said magazine (18).


     
    2. The bearing (34) according to claim 1, further comprising a fourth opening (50) in said sidewall (38) for receiving said fire control mechanism (14) or said magazine (18).
     
    3. The bearing (34) according to claim 1, the bearing (34) further comprising a buffer tube radius (56) for attaching ahuffer tube to said tube (36).
     
    4. The bearing (34) according to claim 1, wherein said second opening (46) is positioned diametrically opposite to said third opening (48).

    a. said first opening (32) is positioned angularly offset from said second opening (46) about a longitudinal axis of said metal tube (36).


     
    5. The bearing (34) according to claim 2, having one of the following features:

    b. said second opening (46) is positioned diametrically opposite to said fourth opening (50);

    c. said third and fourth openings (50) are contiguous with one another;

    d. said fourth opening (50) is wider than said third opening (48).


     
    6. The bearing (34) according to claim 1, wherein said second opening (46) comprises a slot extending lengthwise along said metal tube (36), one end of said slot being open; or wherein the bearing (34) further comprises an aperture (44) in said sidewall (38) for permitting engagement between said bolt carrier (24) and a forward assist button (26).
     
    7. The bearing (34) according to claim 1, wherein one end of said metal tube (36) comprises screw threads; preferably said screw threads (54) are positioned on said inner surface (40), or said screw threads (54) are positioned on an outer surface (56) of said metal tube (36).
     
    8. An upper receiver (20) of a firearm having a bolt carrier (24), a charging handle (22), a fire control mechanism (14) and a magazine (18), said upper receiver (20) comprising:a metal tube (36) having a sidewall (38) defining an inner surface (40) configured to support said bolt carrier (24) and motion thereof between an open position and a battery position;a polymer shroud (58) surrounding at least a portion of said metal tube (36);a first opening (32) in said sidewall (38) and a first opening (70) in said polymer shroud (58) overlying said first opening (32) in said sidewall (38), said first openings (32, 70) defining an ejector port (42);further comprising a second opening (46) in said sidewall (38) and a second opening (72) in said polymer shroud (58) overlying said second opening (46) in said sidewall (38), said second openings (46, 72) positioned to permit engagement between said bolt carrier (24) and said charging handle (22);further comprising a third opening (48) in said sidewall (38) for receiving said fire control mechanism (14) or said magazine (18).
     
    9. The upper receiver (20) according to claim 8, further comprising one of the following features:

    - a rail (60) mounted on said shroud (58) and extending lengthwise along said metal tube (36), said rail (60) comprising a plurality of ribs (62) oriented transversely to a longitudinal axis of said metal tube (36);

    - a housing (64) extending from said shroud (58) for receiving aforward assist hutton (26), said metal tube (36) comprising an aperture (44) aligned with said housing (64) for permitting engagement between said bolt carrier (24) and said forward assist button (26);

    - first and second lugs (68) positioned at opposite ends of said shroud (58) for attaching said shroud (58) to a lower receiver (12).


     
    10. The upper receiver (20) according to claim 8, having one of the following features:

    both first openings (32, 70) are positioned angularly offset from said both openings (46, 72) about a longitudinal axis of said metal tube (36); and

    the upper receiver (20) further comprises a buffer tube radius (56) for attaching a buffer tube to said metal tube (36).


     


    Ansprüche

    1. Lager (34) eines Gehäuseoberteils (20) einer Feuerwaffe mit einem Ladehebel (22), einem Feuerleitmechanismus (14), einem Magazin (18) und einem Gehäuseoberteil (20), das eine Polymerverkleidung (58) aufweist, wobei das Lager (34) geeignet ist zur Verwendung mit einem Verschlussträger (24) der Feuerwaffe, wobei das Lager (34) umfasst:

    ein Metallrohr (36), das gestaltet ist, um in dem Gehäuseoberteil (20) angeordnet zu werden, wobei die Polymerverkleidung (58) gestaltet ist, zumindest einen Teil des Metallrohrs (36) zu umgeben, wobei das Metallrohr (36) eine Seitenwand (38) aufweist, die eine Innenfläche (40) bildet, gestaltet, um den Verschlussträger (24) und eine Bewegung desselben zwischen einer geöffneten Stellung und einer Füllmagazinstellung zu unterstützen;

    eine erste Öffnung (32) in der Seitenwand (38), die ein Auswerffenster (42) bildet;

    eine zweite Öffnung (46) in der Seitenwand (38), die angeordnet ist, um einen Eingriff zwischen dem Verschlussträger (24) und dem Ladehebel (22) zu erlauben;

    eine dritte Öffnung (48) in der Seitenwand (38) zur Aufnahme des Feuerleitmechanismus (14) oder des Magazins (18).


     
    2. Lager (34) nach Anspruch 1, des Weiteren umfassend eine vierte Öffnung (50) in der Seitenwand (38) zur Aufnahme des Feuerleitmechanismus (14) oder des Magazins (18).
     
    3. Lager (34) nach Anspruch 1, wobei das Lager (34) des Weiteren einen Schließfederrohrradius (56) zur Befestigung eines Schließfederrohrs an dem Rohr (36) aufweist.
     
    4. Lager (34) nach Anspruch 1, wobei die zweite Öffnung (46) diametral entgegengesetzt zu der dritten Öffnung (48) angeordnet ist,

    a. die erste Öffnung (32) im Winkel versetzt von der zweiten Öffnung (46) um eine Längsachse des Metallrohrs (36) angeordnet ist.


     
    5. Lager (34) nach Anspruch 2 mit einem der folgenden Merkmale:

    b. die zweite Öffnung (46) ist diametral entgegengesetzt zu der vierten Öffnung (50) angeordnet;

    c. die dritte und die vierte Öffnung (50) sind aneinandergrenzend;

    d. die vierte Öffnung (50) ist weiter als die dritte Öffnung (48).


     
    6. Lager (34) nach Anspruch 1, wobei die zweite Öffnung (46) einen Schlitz aufweist, der sich der Länge nach entlang des Metallrohrs (36) erstreckt, wobei ein Ende des Schlitzes geöffnet ist; oder wobei das Lager (34) des Weiteren eine Öffnung (44) in der Seitenwand (38) aufweist, um einen Eingriff zwischen dem Verschlussträger (24) und einer Vorwärtshilfetaste (26) zu erlauben.
     
    7. Lager (34) nach Anspruch 1, wobei ein Ende des Metallrohrs (36) Schraubengewinde aufweist; wobei vorzugsweise die Schraubengewinde (54) auf der Innenfläche (40) angeordnet sind, oder die Schraubengewinde (54) auf einer Außenfläche (56) des Metallrohrs (36) angeordnet sind.
     
    8. Gehäuseoberteil (20) einer Feuerwaffe mit einem Verschlussträger (24), einem Ladehebel (22), einem Feuerleitmechanismus (14) und einem Magazin (18), wobei das Gehäuseoberteil (20) aufweist: ein Metallrohr (36) mit einer eine Innenfläche (40) bildenden Seitenwand (38), gestaltet, den Verschlussträger (24) und eine Bewegung desselben zwischen einer geöffneten Stellung und einer Füllmagazinstellung zu unterstützen; eine Polymerverkleidung (58), die zumindest einen Teil des Metallrohrs (36) umgibt; eine erste Öffnung (32) in der Seitenwand (38) und eine erste Öffnung (70) in der Polymerverkleidung (58), die über der ersten Öffnung (32) in der Seitenwand (38) liegt, wobei die ersten Öffnungen (32, 70) ein Auswerffenster (42) bilden; des Weiteren umfassend eine zweite Öffnung (46) in der Seitenwand (38) und eine zweite Öffnung (72) in der Polymerverkleidung (58), die über der zweiten Öffnung (46) in der Seitenwand (38) liegt, wobei die zweiten Öffnungen (46, 72) angeordnet sind, um einen Eingriff zwischen dem Verschlussträger (24) und dem Ladehebel (42) zu erlauben; des Weiteren umfassend eine dritte Öffnung (48) in der Seitenwand (38) zur Aufnahme des Feuerleitmechanismus (14) oder des Magazins (18).
     
    9. Gehäuseoberteil (20) nach Anspruch 8, das des Weiteren eins der folgenden Merkmale aufweist:

    - eine Schiene (60), die auf der Verkleidung (58) angebracht ist und der Länge nach entlang des Metallrohrs (36) verläuft, wobei die Schiene (60) eine Vielzahl von Rippen (62) aufweist, die quer zu einer Längsachse des Metallrohrs (36) ausgerichtet sind;

    - ein Gehäuse (64), das sich von der Verkleidung (58) zur Aufnahme einer Vorwärtshilfetaste (26) erstreckt, wobei das Metallrohr (36) eine Öffnung (44) aufweist, die mit dem Gehäuse (64) ausgerichtet ist, um einen Eingriff zwischen dem Verschlussträger (24) und der Vorwärtshilfetaste (26) zu erlauben;

    - erste und zweite Ansätze (68), die an gegenüberliegenden Enden der Verkleidung (58) zur Befestigung der Verkleidung (58) an einem Gehäuseunterteil (12) angeordnet sind.


     
    10. Gehäuseoberteil (20) nach Anspruch 8 mit einem der folgenden Merkmale:

    beide erste Öffnungen (32, 70) sind im Winkel von den beiden Öffnungen (46, 72) um eine Längsachse des Metallrohrs (36) versetzt; und

    das Gehäuseoberteil (20) umfasst des Weiteren einen Schließfederrohrradius (56) zur Befestigung eines Schließfederrohrs an dem Metallrohr (36).


     


    Revendications

    1. Support (34) d'une culasse supérieure (20) d'une arme à feu ayant une manette de chargement (22), un mécanisme de commande de mise à feu (14), un magasin (18) et une culasse supérieure (20) comprenant une chemise en polymère (58), ledit support (34) étant approprié pour être utilisé avec un porte-culasse (24) de ladite arme à feu, ledit support (34) comprenant :

    un tube en métal (36) configuré pour être positionné à l'intérieur de ladite culasse supérieure (20), ladite chemise en polymère (58) étant configurée pour entourer au moins une portion dudit tube en métal (36), ledit tube en métal (36) ayant une paroi latérale (38) définissant une surface intérieure (40) configurée pour supporter ledit porte-culasse (24) et un mouvement de celui-ci entre une position ouverte et une position en batterie ;

    une première ouverture (32) dans ladite paroi latérale (38) définissant un orifice d'éjecteur (42) ;

    une seconde ouverture (46) dans ladite paroi latérale (38) positionnée pour permettre un engagement entre ledit porte-culasse (24) et ladite manette de chargement (22) ; et

    une troisième ouverture (48) dans ladite paroi latérale (38) pour recevoir ledit mécanisme de commande de mise à feu (14) ou ledit magasin (18).


     
    2. Support (34) selon la revendication 1, comprenant en outre une quatrième ouverture (50) dans ladite paroi latérale (38) pour recevoir ledit mécanisme de commande de mise à feu (14) ou ledit magasin (18).
     
    3. Support (34) selon la revendication 1, le support (34) comprenant en outre un tube tampon (56) avec un rayon propre pour attacher un tube tampon sur ledit tube (36).
     
    4. Support (34) selon la revendication 1, dans lequel ladite seconde ouverture (46) est positionnée diamétralement à l'opposé de ladite troisième ouverture (48),

    a) ladite ouverture (32) est positionnée avec un décalage angulaire par rapport à ladite seconde ouverture (46) autour d'un axe longitudinal dudit tube en métal (36).


     
    5. Support (34) selon la revendication 2, possédant l'une des caractéristiques suivantes :

    b) ladite seconde ouverture (46) est positionnée diamétralement à l'opposé de ladite quatrième ouverture (50) ;

    c) ladite troisième et ladite quatrième ouverture (50) sont contiguës l'une à l'autre,

    d) ladite quatrième ouverture (50) est plus large que ladite troisième ouverture (48).


     
    6. Support (34) selon la revendication 1, dans lequel ladite seconde ouverture (46) comprend une fente qui s'étend dans le sens de la longueur le long dudit tube en métal (36), une extrémité de ladite fente étant ouverte ; ou dans lequel le support (34) comprend en outre une ouverture (44) dans ladite paroi latérale (38) pour permettre un engagement entre ledit porte-culasse (24) et un bouton d'assistance vers l'avant (26).
     
    7. Support (34) selon la revendication 1, dans lequel une extrémité dudit tube en métal (36) comprend des pas de vis ; de préférences lesdits pas de vis (54) étant positionnés sur ladite surface intérieure (40), ou lesdits pas de vis (54) étant positionnés sur une surface extérieure (56) dudit tube en métal (36).
     
    8. Culasse supérieure (20) d'une arme à feu ayant un porte-culasse (24), une manette de chargement (22), un mécanisme de commande de mise à feu (14) et un magasin (18), ladite culasse supérieure (20) comprenant un tube en métal (36) ayant une paroi latérale (38) définissant une surface intérieure (40) configurée pour supporter ledit porte-culasse (24) et un mouvement de celui-ci entre une position ouverte et une position en batterie ; une chemise en polymère (58) qui entoure au moins une portion dudit tube en métal (36) ; une première ouverture (32) dans ladite paroi latérale (38) et une première ouverture (70) dans ladite chemise en polymère (58) recouvrant ladite première ouverture (32) dans ladite paroi latérale (38), lesdites premières ouvertures (32, 70) définissant un orifice d'éjecteur (42) ; comprenant en outre une seconde ouverture (46) dans ladite paroi latérale (38) et une seconde ouverture (72) dans ladite chemise en polymère (58) recouvrant ladite seconde ouverture (46) dans ladite paroi latérale (38), lesdites secondes ouvertures (46, 72) étant positionnées pour permettre un engagement entre ledit porte-culasse (24) et ladite manette de chargement (22) ; comprenant en outre une troisième ouverture (48) dans ladite paroi latérale (38) pour recevoir ledit mécanisme de commande de mise à feu (14) ou ledit magasin (18).
     
    9. Culasse supérieure (20) selon la revendication 8, comprenant en outre l'une des caractéristiques suivantes :

    - un rail (60) monté sur ladite chemise (58) et s'étendant dans le sens de la longueur le long dudit tube en métal (36), ledit rail (60) comprenant une pluralité de nervures (62) orientées transversalement à un axe longitudinal dudit tube en métal (36) ;

    - un boîtier (64) s'étendant depuis ladite chemise (58) pour recevoir un bouton d'assistance vers l'avant (26), ledit tube en métal (36) comprenant une ouverture (44) alignée avec ledit boîtier (64) pour permettre un engagement entre ledit porte-culasse (24) et ledit bouton d'assistance vers l'avant (26) ;

    - une première et une seconde patte (68) positionnées à des extrémités opposées de ladite chemise (58) pour attacher ladite chemise (58) à un récepteur inférieur (12).


     
    10. Culasse supérieure (20) selon la revendication 8, ayant l'une des caractéristiques suivantes :

    - les deux premières ouvertures (32, 70) sont positionnées avec un décalage angulaire par rapport auxdites deux ouvertures (46, 62) le long d'un axe longitudinal dudit tube en métal (36) ; et

    - la culasse supérieure (20) comprend en outre un tube tampon (56) avec un rayon propre pour attacher un tube tampon sur ledit tube en métal (36).
