(54)SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR REAL TIME ASSAY MONITORING

(57) An assay monitoring system (10) and mehtod for monitoring a staining process of an assay are disclosed. The assay monitoring system (10) comprises a sample processing system (21) comprising at least one sample (50) having at least one specimen (54) undergoing a staining process in the course of an assay, an imaging system (15) positioned adjacent the sample processing system (21), the imaging system (15) configured to capture an image of the at least one sample (50) during the staining process of the specimen (54), and a controller (12) configured to control the imaging system (15) and the sample processing system (21), wherein the controller (12) is communicatively coupled to the imaging system (15) to receive the captured image of the at least one sample (50) from the imaging system (15). The controller (12) is configured to select a region of the captured image, the region including at least a portion of the specimen undergoing the assay, calculate an index value for the selected region of the captured image, convert the calculated index value to a signal intensity score, determine if a pre-determined value of the score is reached within a pre-determined amount of time, and a) alert a user that the pre-determined value was not reached within the pre-determined amount of time, b) automatically order a repeat test if the pre-determined value is not reached within the pre-determined amount of time, or c) automatically order a second, different test if the pre-determined value is reached during the pre-determined amount of time.
