In order to form micropores in a magnetic coating for the retention of a liquid lubricant, water and an inverse micelle forming surfactant are added in an appropriate molar ratio to the organic binder for the magnetic particles. Micropores of uniform size and distribution are formed in the coating when the water evaporates during curing of the coating. The size and number of the micropores is controlled by the water/surfactant molar ratio, the amount of water and the amount of surfactant. This permits the design and control of the amount of liquid lubricant retained in the magnetic coating.
