    (54) Method and apparatus for extracting information-bearing portions of a signal for recognizing varying instances of similar patterns

    (57) A method and apparatus for extracting information-bearing portions of an input signal from which is calculated a sliding average magnitude difference function (SAMDF). The signal is coupled to three separate data channels. Each channel is logarithmically spaced from the adjacent channel and time and amplitude normalized to generate a data template containing the information-bearing portions of the signal. In addition, a fourth channel is derived from the first three. Sixteen data measurements are taken, four from each of the four channels with three additional data measurements being derived from the energy envelope of the information-bearing portion of the input signal. The 19 total data measurements represent the amplitude normalized envelope of the signal.
