    (54) Apparatus for selecting an operating mode of a recording and reproducing system for a cassette tape recorder


    (57) A mode control ring (200) having cams for operating various devices in a cassette tape recorder is rotatably mounted on a base plate (160). A normal pinch device (450) and a reverse pinch device (400) are mounted on the base plate. Each of the pinch devices comprises a capstan (600, 650), a pinch roller (420, 470) provided on a swing lever so as to be engaged with the capstan, and an idler (604, 654) provided to be engaged with a reel gear (605, 655). A power transmitting device (601, 612, 651) is provided for transmitting a driving power from a motor (150) to each capstan. The normal pinch device (450), reverse pinch device (400) are disposed along the circumference of the mode control ring (200), and each swing lever (410, 460) is arranged so as to be moved in the radial direction of the mode control ring (200).
