(57) A reciprocating pump has a closed chamber with oppositely orientated unidirectional inlet and outlet valves. The pump operates by relative separation and approach of two parts of the chamber (16), in which there are provided guide means (17a,17b), separate from the wall of the chamber, constraining the relative motion of the said two parts to be substantially rectilinear.
