[0001] The present invention relates to a cover for binding a bundle of sheets.
[0002] Preformed covers of a springy material whereby the sheets to be bound can be pushed
between the front and back flaps by stretching the spine open are already known.
[0003] A disadvantage is that the bound bundle obtained remains difficult to keep open and
that, certainly with thick bundles, problems can arise with the visibility or legibility
of the sheets in the area closest to the spine.
[0004] Another disadvantage is that the cover must be selected depending on the bundle of
sheets to be bound.
[0005] An additional disadvantage is that these covers are difficult to manufacture and
hence expensive.
[0006] Known covers are described in
WO-02/058940, wherein the cover comprises a spine and binding profile which are separate, in which
binding profile sheets may be clamped before being connected to the spine, and in
US 2006/0290133 which discloses a cover according to the preamble of claim 1, wherein loose sheets
are intended to be attached to a binding profile by means of rods going through holes
in the legs of the binding profile and through corresponding holes provided in the
sheets.
[0007] The aim of the present invention is to offer a solution to one or more of the aforementioned
and/or other disadvantages by providing a cover for binding a bundle of sheets, whereby
the cover comprises a spine with flaps attached thereto, characterised in that the
cover comprises in addition a loose binding profile with a bottom and two legs between
which a bundle of sheets can be clamped, said binding profile is made from a springy
or other material or comprises a hinge that allows the legs to move toward or away
from one another and which binding profile can be attached to the spine of the cover
after clamping the bundle of sheets, whereby there are pegs in the binding profile
that, can cut through the bundle.
[0008] An advantage is that the bound bundle of sheets is secured firmly in the cover and
cannot come loose under the effect of a tractive force, irrespective of the direction
of that force.
[0009] Another advantage is that binding a bundle of sheets in the cover is very simple,
so that the cover is very user friendly.
[0010] This is because it is sufficient to insert the bundle of sheets in the binding profile
and then to attach the binding profile to the spine of the cover.
[0011] A further advantage is that the cover is simple to manufacture since the binding
profile and the cover are easy to make as separate components.
[0012] An advantage associated with this is that the cover is cheap to make.
[0013] Means are preferably provided to prevent a bundle clasped in the binding profile
being pulled out of the binding profile in a crosswise direction.
[0014] Another advantage is that repeatedly opening up the bundle and pressing it flat has
no effect on the binding of the bundle in the cover.
[0015] An associated advantage is that the life of the bound cover is extended considerably.
[0016] To better demonstrate the characteristics, hereafter a preferred embodiment of a
cover according to the invention is described by way of example, without any limiting
nature, with reference to the attached drawings, wherein:
figure 1 shows schematically and in perspective a cover according to the invention
after a bundle of sheets has been bound in the cover;
figure 2 shows on a larger scale the part indicated by the arrow F2 in figure 1;
figure 3 shows schematically and in perspective the binding profile from figure 1;
figure 4 shows a variant of the binding profile in figure 3.
[0017] Figure 1 shows schematically a cover 1 with a bound bundle, whereby the cover consists
chiefly of a spine 2 and two flaps 3 attached thereto, a front flap 4 and a back flap
5 respectively.
[0018] As is known, the aforementioned flaps 3 and spine 2 can be formed together as a single
continuous structure, but it is also possible for the spine 2 and the flaps 3 to be
embodied as separate elements that are attached to one another by means of an internal
or external covering 6-7, as shown in figure 2.
[0019] In a practical embodiment of the invention the spine 2 may be preformed.
[0020] Preferably the spine 2 of the cover is somewhat U-shaped, whereby in the most practical
embodiment the legs of the spine converge somewhat.
[0021] Preferably the spine 2 of the cover 1 is made from metal or steel, but it is clear
to a man skilled in the art that a number of materials can be employed in the spine
2 and flaps 3.
[0022] According to the invention a binding profile 8 of a springy or other material is
attached to the spine 2 of the cover 1.
[0023] In a practical embodiment of the invention, as shown in figure 3, the binding profile
8 is a U-shaped profile.
[0024] In the most practical embodiment of the invention the external shape of the binding
profile 8 and the internal shape of the spine 2 are substantially matched to one another
such that the binding profile 8 can be pushed into the spine 2 along its longitudinal
axis.
[0025] In a practical embodiment of the invention the binding profile 8 is made from a synthetic
material, such as, for example, plastic or some other man-made material, or from a
springy or other metal, but the invention is not limited thereto.
[0026] According to the invention the binding profile 8 comprises a bottom 9 with two upright
legs or sidewalls 10-11.
[0027] In a practical embodiment of the invention the binding profile 8 comprises a hinge
that allows the legs 10-11 to move toward or away from one another.
[0028] In the embodiment shown the thickness of the binding profile 8 is somewhat thinner
at the transitions between the legs 10-11 and the bottom 9, but this is not a requirement
of the invention.
[0029] The aforementioned bottom 9 and legs 10,11 enclose a space 12 into which the bundle
of sheets to be bound 13 can be inserted.
[0030] Preferably the legs 10,11 of the binding profile 8 are parallel to one another or
converge somewhat with one another.

direction, since the staples in the bundle are placed behind a thickened part, projection
or folded edge.

its bottom 9 in the cover 1.

[0048] Obviously the attachment of the binding profile 8 to the cover 1 need not necessarily
be done by means of glue 16, but rather the binding profile 8 may also be attached
to the cover 1 in other ways, for example by providing barbs on the outside of the
binding profile 8.
[0049] Such an embodiment whereby the outside of the binding profile 8 comprises one or
more projections, preferably in the form of the aforementioned barbs, avoids the binding
profile 8 being removed from the spine 2, at an undesired moment.
[0050] Method for binding a bundle of sheets 13 by means of a cover 1 according to the invention
is very simple and as follows.
[0051] In a first step the bundle of sheets 13 to be bound may or may not be bound together,
for example by means of one or more staples.
[0052] The bundle may also be pre-perforated if necessary, but this is not strictly required
if a binding profile 8 with sharp pegs 14 is used.
[0053] It is obvious to a man skilled in the art that in the case of the pegs 14 of the
binding profile 8 having blunt ends, such pre-perforation of the bundle 13 is the
better choice.
[0054] Irrespective of whether or not it is pre-perforated and/or bound together, the bundle
to be bound 13 can be clasped in the loose binding profile 8.
[0055] In addition, the legs 10-11 of the binding profile 8 may be opened up a little near
their free extremities.

13 will automatically be perforated when they are inserted.

longitudinal axis of the spine 2.

8 will be difficult to pull free by a crosswise force, if the distance between the
extremities of the legs of the spine 2 is approximately equal to the thickness of
the bundle of sheets 13.

8 is not flat but is made in the form of an arc.

a preformed spine that is given a suitable shape.

and shown in the figures, but a cover 1 according to the invention for the binding

1. Cover (1) for binding a bundle of sheets (13), whereby the cover (1) comprises a spine
(2) with flaps attached thereto (3,4,5), the cover (1) comprising in addition a loose
binding profile (8) with a bottom (9) and two legs (10-11) characterised in that a bundle of sheets (13) can be clamped between the legs, said binding profile (8)
is made from a springy or other material or comprises a hinge that allows the legs
(10-11) to move toward or away from one another and which binding profile (8) can
be attached to the spine (2) of the cover (1) after clamping the bundle of sheets
(13), whereby there are pegs (14) in the binding profile that can cut through the
bundle.
2. Cover (1) according to claim 1, characterised in that the external shape of the binding profile (8) and the internal shape of the spine
(2) are substantially matched to one another such that the binding profile (8) can
be slid into the spine (2) along its longitudinal axis.
3. Cover (1) according to one of the preceding claims, characterised in that at least one leg (10) of the binding profile (8) comprises one or more pegs (14)
pointing toward the other leg (11).
4. Cover (1) according to claim 34, characterised in that the peg (14) has a sharp point or cutting edge.
5. Cover (1) according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that at least one leg (10,11) of the binding profile (8) is provided with an inward-folded
edge or double-folded edge.
6. Cover (1) according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the binding profile (8) is made from a synthetic material or from a springy or other
metal.
7. Cover (1) according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the spine (2) of the cover (1) is pre-formed.
8. Cover (1) according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the cover (1) possesses a metal or steel spine (2).
9. Cover (1) according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the spine (2) of the cover (1) is U-shaped.
10. Cover (1) according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the binding profile (8) is provided with means of attaching the binding profile (8)
to the cover (1).
11. Cover (1) according to claim 10, characterised in that the aforementioned means comprises a glue layer (16) or a self-adhesive glue strip
on the spine (2) of the cover (1) and/or on the binding profile (8).
12. Cover (1) according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the aforementioned means comprise one or more projections, preferably in the form
of barbs, on the outside of the binding profile (8), so that the binding profile (8)
cannot accidentally be removed again from the spine (2).

Blättern (13), an dem Rücken (2) des Umschlags (1) befestigt werden kann, wobei Stifte
(14) in dem Bindeprofil vorhanden sind, die durch das Bündel schneiden können.
2. Umschlag (1) nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die äußere Form des Einbindeprofils (8) und die innere Form des Rückens (2) im Wesentlichen
aufeinander abgestimmt sind, sodass das Einbindeprofil (8) in seiner Längsrichtung
in den Rücken (2) eingeschoben werden kann.
3. Umschlag (1) nach einem der vorgenannten Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass mindestens ein Schenkel (10) des Einbindeprofils (8) einen oder mehrere Stifte (14)
umfasst, die zu dem anderen Schenkel (11) gerichtet sind.
4. Umschlag (1) nach Anspruch 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Stift (14) eine scharfe Spitze oder Schneidkante aufweist.
5. Umschlag (1) nach einem der vorgenannten Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass mindestens ein Schenkel (10, 11) des Einbindeprofils (8) mit einem nach innen umgefalteten
Rand oder zusammengefalteten Rand versehen ist.
6. Umschlag (1) nach einem der vorgenannten Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Einbindeprofil (8) aus einem Synthetikmaterial oder aus einem federnden oder
anderen Metall hergestellt ist.
7. Umschlag (1) nach einem der vorgenannten Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Rücken (2) des Umschlags (1) vorgeformt ist.
8. Umschlag (1) nach einem der vorgenannten Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Umschlag (1) einen Metall- oder Stahlrücken (2) besitzt.
9. Umschlag (1) nach einem der vorgenannten Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Rücken (2) des Umschlags (1) U-förmig ist.
10. Umschlag (1) nach einem der vorgenannten Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Einbindeprofil (8) mit Mitteln zur Befestigung des Einbindeprofils (8) an dem
Umschlag (1) versehen ist.
11. Umschlag (1) nach Anspruch 10, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die vorgenannten Mittel eine Leimschicht (16) oder einen selbstklebenden Leimstreifen
an dem Rücken (2) des Umschlags (1) und/oder an dem Einbindeprofil (8) umfassen.
12. Umschlag (1) nach einem der vorgenannten Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die vorgenannten Mittel einen oder mehrere Vorsprünge, bevorzugt in Form von Widerhaken,
an der Außenseite des Einbindeprofils (8) umfassen, sodass das Einbindeprofil (8)
nicht versehentlich wieder aus dem Rücken (2) entfernt werden kann.

vers un intérieur ou d'un bord doublement replié.
6. Couverture (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que le profilé de reliure (8) est constitué d'une matière synthétique ou bien d'un métal
élastique ou analogue.
7. Couverture (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que le dos (2) de la couverture (1) est préfabriqué.
8. Couverture (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que la couverture (1) possède un dos (2) métallique ou en acier.
9. Couverture (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que le dos (2) de la couverture (1) présente une configuration en forme de U.
10. Couverture (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que le profilé de reliure (8) est équipé d'un moyen pour fixer le profilé de reliure
(8) à la couverture (1).
11. Couverture (1) selon la revendication 10, caractérisée en ce que le moyen susmentionné comprend une couche de colle (16) ou bien une bande de colle
autoadhésive sur le dos (2) de la couverture (1) et/ou sur le profilé de reliure (8).
12. Couverture (1) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisée en ce que le moyen susmentionné comprend une ou plusieurs saillies, de préférence sous la forme
de barbes, à l'extérieur du profilé de reliure (8), si bien que le profilé de reliure
(8) ne peut plus être séparé par inadvertance du dos (2).
