(57) In an engine driving type air conditioner (100) and a method of controlling the air conditioner, information on at least one of the rotational number of an engine (10), the opening degree of a fuel adjusting valve (35) and the opening degree of a throttle (36) is achieved, it is judged on the basis of the information thus achieved whether the engine (10) to be controlled in accordance with an air conditioning load is under overload state or not, and engine load reducing control of reducing the load of the engine is carried out if it is judged that the engine is under overload state.
