FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to means and devices used in toilets or lavatories;
particularly relates to means used to raise and lower the lid and seat of a toilet
without direct contact with the hand and more specifically is referred to a novel
device with pedal drive mechanism and hydraulic actuator to raise and lower, respectively,
the lid and seat of a toilet independently or simultaneously.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] As is well known, toilets commonly used, are shaped in such a way that structurally
comprise a bowl consisting of a body having a central cavity of round or oblong hole,
with an internal trap which discharges by a base fixed to floor and where the exit
of the trap is connected to the sanitary drainage network; said bowl comprising an
upper tank where a volume of water is deposited, which is connected through a duct
with said bowl; wherein said ducts comprise a ball-cock supply valve with driving
means for discharging water into the bowl.
[0003] A water supply conduit from a water supply source of domestic network or public network
is connected directly into the water storage upper tank, comprising or not a control
bypass valve; wherein said tank comprises valve means controlled by a float element
to control the volume of water to be stored and discharged to the toilet, to dislodge
micturitions and/or feces.
[0004] The toilet bowl hole comprises in the back part, some orifices where are inserted
fixing means for a collapsible bowl hole cover lid and seat which are in a round or
horseshoe shape, disposed below the lid and over the edge of the bowl hole, that is
used for reasons of hygiene to prevent the user from having direct contact with the
toilet surface, as well as provide greater comfort to the user.
[0005] The covering lid of the bowl consists of a solid body similar to the hole shape (round
or oblong) and the seat has an annular or elliptical shape that follows the contour
of the bowl hole, some seats are shaped like a horseshoe. Said seat is used so that
people to sit on it and avoid direct contact with the bowl surface; in some cases
the seat is padded for comfort, while the lid allows covering the bowl hole.
[0006] When a female person uses the toilet, usually tends to lift the lid with at least
one hand, which implies contamination, poor hygiene, etc.
[0007] As for a male person, is well known existing problems, as when a man only seeks urinate,
usually if it has a good habit, lifts with his hands both the lid and seat to avoid
splashing the seat with urine and keep clean the seat, when the toilet is used to
defecate, with the sanitary implications already indicated by the direct contact of
the hand with the lid and seat, but in many cases the man, only lift the lid, or if
the lid is already raised, they do not raise the seat, which imply that when they
urinate splash and get wet with urine the seat, causing displeasure in other users
and causing contamination of the lid that could be a source of infection for other
users, especially when some of these users who have bad habit and do not lift the
lid, have some infectious disease contagious through urine.
[0008] In the prior art were found various mechanisms and mechanical devices, hydraulic
and pneumatic that allow lift the toilet lid and/or seat, as an example are cited
the following documents as reference, the patent application
PA/a/2001/006808, the patent Application
GB 2376475 (A), the utility model MX1636, the Mexican patent application
Pa/a/2006/012503, the
U.S. Patent 4, 291,422, among others.
[0009] Also in the patent application by the same inventor Carlo Gomez Spain Collignon
MX/a/2009/005262 filed May 18, 2009, entitled hydraulic driving device for raising and lowering the cover lid and seat
of a toilet, and driving method, as in the patent application also by the same inventor
MX/a/2009/009461 also filed September 4, 2009, which has already been granted and is in the process of issuing the corresponding
title. Said application relates to improvements to the hydraulic driving device for
raising and lowering the covering lid and seat of a toilet, makes a remembrance of
the state of the art and described the major drawbacks of various devices that perform
the same operation, which are made extensive to the present description by reference:
[0010] Patent application
MX/a/2009/005262, is intended to protect a hydraulic driving device for raising and lowering the covering
lid and seat of a toilet, characterized by comprising a casing comprising two hollow
chambers attached, one left and one right, the cameras housing a left rotatable shaft
and a right rotatable shaft, respectively; both shafts comprise a counterweight fixedly
rotatable together with the shaft within the chambers, each chamber also houses a
left and right resilient diaphragm, attachment and interacting with the counterweights,
said diaphragms comprise at least one connecting pivot where is connected a supplying
duct and/or working fluid exit to actuate-push the counterweight when they are inflated
with working fluid supplied by an automatic system or by a contact driving elements
system and cause the turn of said shafts connected to a cover and a seat of a toilet,
respectively, and which comprise at the back part, one left and one right connecting
flanges with orifice through which is inserted one left and one right fixing bolts
which is fixed at the ends of the rotatable shafts with the corresponding counterweights.
[0011] The application
MX/a/2009/009461 seeks protection of improvements for a hydraulic driving device to raise and lower
the covering lid and seat of a toilet, of the kind formed by two left and right modules
linked together, where each module has their respective elements and has the same
conformation, characterized by said left and right modules comprise a casing, comprising
internally an central transverse axis whose ends protrude and wherein said casing
is internally divided into three semicircular recesses; the left axis end is attached
to the lid and the right axis end to the seat, the opposite end being fixed to a drive
plate of three flanges, remaining housed one flange in each cavity of the casing;
also being housed in each cavity a cylindrical diaphragm attached to each of the flanges,
which when are filled with water pressed the flanges simultaneously causing partial
turn of the axes which being coupled to the lid (left axis) or to the seat (right
axis) are lifted together or separately or folded down on its rotary displacement
when discharged; said diaphragms are connected and fed via check valve, first adapted
to allow the passage of water supply to fill up the diaphragms when one of the actuating
valves is actuated by the foot or hand arranged on the floor in the left and right
side of the toilet, and second to drain the water and empty the diaphragms through
a pipeline to the toilet tank when the toilet button is actuated to discharge the
same and activate the check valve; said left and right valves of foot actuation are
connected to a general water distributor and is connected to the water supply duct
of the supply network which supplies the toilet tank.
[0012] In both applications the devices operate based on diaphragms that must be filled
with water to drive some shafts through some flanges, which are attached at their
ends to a cover and seat to raise and lower in their turns. The device offers multiple
embodiments in the two applications, but requires of multiple hydraulic connections
that make complex the assembly, the operation and activation by the user.
[0013] Also involves the installation of large, bulky bodies for multiple connections and
water distributions and their installation is complex, time-consuming and requires
specialized personnel among other multiple disadvantages.
[0014] Most of these devices are actuated using hydraulic elements which use the water supply
from a supply source so that by means of hydraulic actuators drive various mechanisms
for lifting the lid and seat simultaneously or separately, but these devices with
hydraulic actuators are costly, complex and require special connections; in some cases
require solenoid valves with presence sensors that increase costs considerably, besides
requiring trained personnel for installation.
[0015] Devices are known which can be actuated by pedal, but these pedals comprise valve
means that regulate water flow into a mechanism to raise the lid and seat, so that
requiring connections and hydraulic lines, as well as actuation means operating with
the water power so as to raise and lower the lid and seat.
[0016] In any document located is protected or disclosed a device with pedal drive mechanism
without the intervention of valve or hydraulic actuators to lift the lid and seat
and optionally include hydraulic means for lowering the lid and seat automatically
after to discharge the water from the tank when the toilet has been used.
[0017] The device as is conceptualized is novel as it is designed and developed after multiple
tests, developments, research, investment of financial, personnel and supplies resources,
which has allowed obtaining the device object of the present invention.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
[0018] The main object of the present invention is to make available a device with pedal
drive mechanisms to raise the lid and seat of a toilet and with hydraulic actuators
to lower the lid and seat automatically, once toilet tank water is discharged to dislodge
debris from the toilet.
[0019] Another object of the invention is to make available such a device with pedal drive
mechanisms to raise the lid and seat of a toilet and with hydraulic actuators to lower
lid and seat automatically when the water tank is discharged, which also provide greater
safety and hygiene to the toilet users.
[0020] Another object of the invention is to make available such a device with pedal drive
mechanisms to raise the lid and seat of a toilet and with hydraulic actuators to lower
the lid and seat automatically when the water tank is discharged, which also avoids
the possibility of infection by users, avoiding splashing the seat with urine.
[0021] Another object of the invention is to make available such a device with pedal drive
mechanisms to raise the lid and seat of a toilet and with hydraulic actuators to lower
the lid and seat automatically when the water tank is discharged, which is also structurally
simple, easy to manufacture, easy to drive and easy to install.
[0022] Another object of the invention is to make available such a device with pedal drive
mechanisms to raise the lid and seat of a toilet and with hydraulic actuators to lower
the lid and seat automatically when the water tank is discharged, which is also easy
to install, of simple structure, practical, functional and easy operation.
[0023] And all those qualities and objectives that will become apparent from the description
of the present invention supported by the illustrated embodiments.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0024] Generally the device with pedal drive mechanisms and hydraulic actuator to raise
and lower, respectively, the lid and seat of a toilet, in accordance with the present
invention comprises a support structure housing a first rotatably axis and a second
axis disposed collinearly and partially separated at their ends enclosed within said
support structure; the first axis being longer and being attached at the end which
protrudes laterally from said support structure at the back side part of the toilet
lid; said second axis is short and protruding at its end opposite to said support
structure to be affixed to the back side part of a toilet seat.
[0025] The first axis attached at its end to the lid and the second axis attached at its
end to the seat comprise fixedly at the collinear attached internal ends of the support
structure, a first cam and a second cam, respectively, adapted to receive and hold
the end of a first cable and a second cable; the two cables of each cam out from underneath
the support structure and extends from the back part of the toilet by the sides to
the front part thereof, the end of the first cable is connected to a first pedal element
and the end of the second cable is connected to a second pedal element, independent
of each other, but mounted in the same structure, to be actuated with a foot.
[0026] In its preferred embodiment of the invention said first pedal, having attached the
first cable extending and fixed to said first cam that is fixedly mounted on said
first fixed axis at the lid, is wider than the second pedal, for identification.
when is desired to lift the lid for use the toilet to defecate, the first wider pedal
is pressed with the foot to retract the first cable that pulls the first cam making
rotate to said first axis and being attached at its end to the lid, lifts, leaving
the seat in normal position to use the toilet, said first pedal remains in actuated
position without returning to its rest position.
[0027] When is desired to lift the lid and seat simultaneously to use the toilet to urinate
(in the case of a male person), are pressed simultaneously with the foot both the
first pedal and second pedal, which pull the corresponding cables attached to said
cams, joined in turn to said first and second axes connected to the lid and seat,
respectively to lift them.
in the event that the lid is already raised and is desired lift the seat, the first
pedal is in actuated position and the second pedal should be at rest position, the
latter is pressed with the foot to pull the second cable that pulls the second cam
making rotate said second axis and being attached at its end to the seat, lifts it;
in this case both pedals remain in actuated position without returning to its rest
position.
[0028] The pedals return to their rest position to be actuated when the lid and seat are
lowered separately or simultaneously. To avoid this contact with the hand, the device
may comprise optionally or jointly a mechanism activated with hydraulic piston to
allow a second turn in the opposite direction of said axes and hence to lower the
lid and seat simultaneously or independently and automatically when the water is discharged
from the toilet tank once it has stopped using.
[0029] Said support structure comprises a base comprising vertical support means where rest
and rotate said first axis and second axis and a cover which is mounted on the base
and is coupled to the same with attachment means, to internally protect the axes and
actuation cams.
[0030] The support structure is fixed to the toilet in the back part of the hole of said
toilet, attached to the base of the water reservoir and employs a hollow fixing means
penetrating through a hole formed in the toilet and which has screw means for fixing;
through said hollow fixing means penetrate the pedal drive cables and through a hole
formed in the base of said support structure.
[0031] Said hydraulic piston actuated mechanism, comprises of a hydraulic piston whose rod
makes an upstroke when pressurized water enter to said piston, to push and turn optionally
a third cam mounted on said first axis fixed to said lid and to push simultaneously
or separately a fourth cam fixed to a third hollow axis mounted on said first independent
rotatably axis and fixed at one of its ends to said seat.
[0032] Said hydraulic piston comprises a bottom connection where a water supply duct is
connected from a supply source and housing internally a rod as upstroke element comprising
a recoil enveloping spring, said piston comprising a first lower hole for entry of
water which is in communication with a second transversal hole that allows the water
supply through a side exit of the piston connected via a supply duct to the bottom
outlet of the water storage tank of the toilet for filling it when discharged by effect
of pressure differential.
[0033] When the toilet is actuated to discharge the water from the tank and dislodge the
waste from the toilet, is generated a pressure differential that allows the flow of
pressurized water to the second fold-down piston from the supply source to fill the
tank, and simultaneously drive the piston rod comprising fixedly at its upper end
a cross shaped thrust cam, which in its upstroke abuts and pushes said third cam mounted
on said first axis fixed to said lid and pushes simultaneously or separately a fourth
cam fixed on a third hollow axis mounted on said first independent rotatably axis
fixed at one end of said seat, so that allows fold-down the lid and seat simultaneously,
or separately by effect of secure elements.
[0034] Said hydraulic piston is fixed in the back and bottom parts to said toilet by means
of a hollow fixing element which penetrate in a second orifice formed on said toilet,
and also holds said base of the support structure to secure it at the same time over
the toilet in the back part of the hole thereof, through said hollow fixing element
the piston rod makes its stroke and penetrates through a second hole formed in the
base of the support structure to drive the axes cams to lower the lid and seat as
described.
[0035] Said base support structure cover comprises secure elements to prevent fold-down
or lower the lid folded and locking elements which lock the piston element to prevent
fold-down or lower the lid and seat; said secure element comprises a horizontal travel
button mounted in a horizontal groove of said casing and being connected to a guide
rail element embracing a protrusion of said first cam, which being slidably embraced
by said first elongate axis which is attached to the lid, can moves horizontally to
remove said first cam and to avoid contact with the cross shaped thrust cam; in this
way is disabled the axis of the lid and prevents the lid is lowered when the water
tank is discharged, pushing only the second cam fixed to said third hollow axis mounted
in said first independent rotatably axis and fixed at one of its ends to said seat
in order to fold-dawn or lower the seat only.
[0036] Said locking element comprises a button slidably mounted in a horizontal groove of
the casing and which comprises fixedly a locking cam; so that when said button slides
horizontally said locking cam moves obstructing the upstroke of the piston rod and
avoids that when discharging the water tank of the toilet, the lid and seat lower
automatically.
[0037] To better understanding of the features of the invention, are attached to this description
as an integral part thereof, the drawings with illustrative but not limiting character,
as described below.

[0039] For a better understanding of the invention, the detailed description of some embodiments
of the same will be made, shown in the drawings for illustration but not limiting
purposes which are appended to the present description.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0040] The characteristics details of the device with pedal drive mechanisms and hydraulic
actuator to raise and lower, respectively, the lid and seat of a toilet, are clearly
shown in the following description and the appended illustrative drawings, serving
the same reference signs to indicate the same parts.
[0041] Referring to Figures 1-6, the device with pedal drive mechanisms and hydraulic actuator
to raise and lower, respectively, the lid 8 and seat 9 of a toilet 18, in accordance
with the present invention comprises a support structure 1 comprising a base 2 comprising
vertical support means 3 where rest a rotatably first axis 4 and a second axis 5,
and a cover 6 which is mounted on the base 2 and which is coupled thereto with fixing
means 7. Said first axis 4 and second axis 5 are arranged collinearly and partially
separated at their ends enclosed within said support structure 1; the first axis 4
being longer and being attached at the end protruding laterally from said support
structure at the back side part of the lid 8 of a toilet; said second axis 5 is short
and protrudes at its end in the opposite side of said support structure 1 to be affixed
to the back side part of a toilet seat 9.
[0042] The first axis 4 attached at its end to the lid 8 and the second axis 5 attached
at its end to the seat 9 comprise fixedly with fixing means 10 at the collinear attached
internal ends of the support structure 1, a first cam 11 and a second cam 12, respectively,
adapted to receive and hold the end of a first cable 13 and second cable 14; the two
cables of each cam out from underneath the support structure 1 and extending from
the rear part of the toilet by the sides to the front part thereof; the end of the
first cable 13 is connected to a first pedal element 15 and the end of the second
cable 14 is connected to a second pedal element 16, independent of each other, but
mounted in the same structure 17, to be driven with one foot.
[0043] The support structure 1 is fixed to the toilet 18 in the back part of the hole of
said toilet, attached to the base of the water tank 19 and is used a fixing hollow
means 20 which penetrates through a orifice (not shown) formed in the toilet 18 and
has threaded means 21 for fastening; through said fixing hollow means 20 penetrate
the cables 13 and 14 of actuation with pedal and through an orifice 22 formed in the
base 2 of said support structure 1.
[0044] Referring to Figures 1-8, when it is desired to lift the lid 8 for using the toilet
to defecate, the first pedal 15 is pressed by foot to retract the first cable 13 which
pulls the first cam 11 making rotate said first axis 4 and being attached at its end
to the lid 8, lifts it, remaining the seat 9 in a normal position to use the toilet,
said first pedal 15 remains in actuated position without returning to its rest position.
[0045] With reference to Figures 1-10 and preferably 9 and 10, in the condition where the
lid 8 has been previously lifted as is shown in Figures 7 and 8, and it is desired
lift the seat 9 for urinate (in the case of male person), the first pedal 15 will
be in actuated position and the second pedal 16 should be at rest position, the latter
is pressed by the foot to pull the second cable 14 which pulls the second cam 12 making
rotate said second axis 5 and being attached at its end to the seat 9, lifts it. In
this case both pedals 15 and 16 remain in actuated position without returning to its
rest position.
[0046] In the case where it is required to lift the lid 8 and the seat 9 simultaneously
to use the toilet to urinate (in the case of a male person), is pressed simultaneously
with the foot, both the first pedal 15 and the second pedal 16, which pull the corresponding
cables 13 and 14 attached to said cams 11 and 12, attached in turn to said first 4
and second 5 axes connected to the lid 8 and seat 9, respectively, to lift them simultaneously.
[0047] In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the device further includes a hydraulic
piston actuated mechanism to allow a second turn in the opposite direction of said
axes and hence to lower the lid and seat simultaneously or independently and automatically
when water from the toilet tank is discharged, once it has stopped using. To explain
it should be observed Figures 1, 2, 5, 7, 9 and 11 to 12b.
[0048] In the referred figures, said hydraulic piston actuated mechanism to allow for a
second turn in the opposite direction of said axes 4 and 5 and thus to lower the lid
8 and seat 9 simultaneously or independently and automatically when water is discharged
from the toilet tank once it has stopped using, consists of hydraulic piston 23 which
comprises a bottom connection where is connected a water supply conduit 24 from a
supply source and which internally houses a rod 25 as upstroke element comprising
a recoil enveloping spring 26; said piston 23 comprises a first bottom hole (not shown)
to the water inlet being in communication with a second transverse hole (not shown)
which allows the water supply through an side exit 27 of the piston connected through
a supply conduit 28 to the lower intake of the water storage tank 19 of toilet 18
to fill it when is discharged by effect of pressure differential.
[0049] The rod 25 of the piston 23 comprises fixedly at its upper end a cross shaped thrust
cam 29, which in its upstroke abuts and pushes a third cam 30 slidably mounted in
the longitudinal direction, but non-rotatably on said first axis 4 fixed to said lid
8 and pushes simultaneously or separately a fourth cam 31 fixed when moving in a third
hollow axis 32 mounted on said first independent rotatably axis 4; said third hollow
axis 32 being fixed to said seat 9, so allowing fold-down the lid and seat simultaneously,
or separately by effect of secure elements.
[0050] Said hydraulic piston 23 is fixed to the bottom rear part of the toilet 18 through
a fixing hollow element 20b which penetrates into a second orifice (not shown) provided
in said toilet 18 and which also holds said base of the support structure 1 to fixed
it at the same time above the toilet in the back part of the hole thereof; through
said fixing hollow element 20b the piston rod makes its stroke and penetrates through
a second orifice 33 (Fig. 1) formed in the base 2 of the support structure 1 for driving
the shafts cams to lower the lid and seat as described.
[0051] When the toilet 18 is actuated to discharge water from the tank 19 and to dislodge
debris from the toilet, a pressure differential is generated that allows the flow
of pressurized water to the fold-down piston 23 from the supply source to fill the
tank and simultaneously actuates the piston rod 25 to push the third cam 30 and the
fourth cam 31 simultaneously or separately and lower the lid and seat.
[0052] When the lid 8 and lower seat 9 are lowered, the pedals 15 and 16 return to their
rest position to be actuated.
[0053] In Figures 1, 2, 11 and 13, it is observed that said cover 6 of the support structure
1 comprises secure elements to prevent fold-down or lower the lid and locking elements
which locks the piston element to prevent fold-down or lower the lid and seat; said
secure element consisting of a horizontal travel button 34 mounted in a horizontal
groove of the cover 6 and being connected to a guide rail element 35 embracing a protrusion
of said third cam 30, which being slidably embraced by said first elongate axis 4
which is attached to the lid 8, can moves horizontally to remove said third cam 30
and to avoid contact with the cross shaped thrust cam attached to the rod 25; in this
way is disabled the axis 4 of the lid 8 and prevents the lid is lowered when the water
tank is discharged, pushing only the fourth cam 31 fixed to said third hollow axis
32 mounted in said first independent rotatably axis 4 and fixed at one of its ends
to said seat 9 in order to fold-dawn or lower the seat only.
[0054] Said locking element comprises a button 36 slidably mounted in a horizontal groove
of the cover 6 of the support structure 1 and which comprises fixedly a locking cam
37; so that when said button 36 slides horizontally said locking cam 37 disposed on
the cross shaped thrust cam 29 fixed to the rod 25, obstructing the upstroke of the
rod of the piston 23 and avoids that when discharging the water tank 19 of the toilet
18, the lid 8 and seat 9 lower automatically.
