TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present invention relates to a thermoelectric power generating device, and particularly,
relates to a thermoelectric power generating device performing a thermoelectric power
generation by use of exhaust gas discharged from an internal combustion engine.
BACKGROUND ART
[0002] Conventionally, a thermal energy is included in exhaust gas or the like discharged
from an internal combustion engine of a vehicle such as an automobile, and if the
exhaust gas is just discarded, the thermal energy is wasted. In view of this, the
thermal energy included in the exhaust gas is collected by a thermoelectric power
generating device, so as to be converted into an electrical energy and charged into
a battery, for example.
[0003] As such a conventional thermoelectric power generating device, there has been known
a thermoelectric power generating device in which a high-temperature part of a thermoelectric
conversion module makes contact with an exhaust pipe into which exhaust gas discharged
from an internal combustion engine is introduced, and a low-temperature part of the
thermoelectric conversion module makes contact with a cooling water pipe through which
cooling water circulates (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
[0004] The thermoelectric conversion module is configured to include a thermoelectric transducer
such as a semiconductor, electrodes, a heat-receiving substrate serving as the high-temperature
part, a heat-dissipation substrate serving as the low-temperature part, and the like.
The thermoelectric conversion module generates electric power by causing a temperature
difference between the high-temperature part and the low-temperature part of the thermoelectric
conversion module due to exhaust gas having a high temperature and cooling water at
a low temperature by use of a Seebeck effect.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Problem to be Solved by the Invention
[0006] However, in such a conventional power transmission device, the exhaust gas at a high
temperature (e.g., around 500°C) is introduced into the high-temperature part of the
thermoelectric conversion module, and the cooling water at a low temperature (e.g.,
40°C) is introduced into the low-temperature part, so that a temperature difference
between the high-temperature part and the low-temperature part of the thermoelectric
conversion module becomes large.
[0007] Because of this, the high-temperature part of the thermoelectric conversion module
expands relative to the low-temperature part, thereby causing large thermal distortion,
which may damage the thermoelectric conversion module. In order to prevent the thermoelectric
conversion module from being damaged by the thermal distortion, it is necessary to
downsize the thermoelectric conversion module. However, if the thermoelectric conversion
module is downsized, many thermoelectric conversion modules are required to secure
a power generation amount of the thermoelectric conversion module.
[0008] This accordingly results in that many electric wirings and the like to connect the
many thermoelectric conversion modules are required, which causes trouble over a manufacturing
operation of the thermoelectric power generating device and increases a manufacturing
cost of the thermoelectric power generating device.
[0009] The present invention is accomplished in order to solve the above conventional problem,
and an object of the present invention is to provide a thermoelectric power generating
device that is able to decrease thermal distortion of thermoelectric conversion modules
and to upsize the thermoelectric conversion modules, thereby making it possible to
simplify a manufacturing operation and to decrease a manufacturing cost.
Means for Solving the Problem
[0010] In order to achieve the above object, a thermoelectric power generating device according
to the present invention is a thermoelectric power generating device including thermoelectric
conversion modules each performing a thermoelectric power generation according to
a temperature difference between a high-temperature part and a low-temperature part,
and the thermoelectric power generating device is configured to include: an exhaust-gas
introduction portion configured to introduce, into the high-temperature part, exhaust
gas discharged from an internal combustion engine; and a steam flow portion configured
to introduce, into the low-temperature part, steam of refrigerant heated by heat of
the exhaust gas.
[0011] The thermoelectric power generating device is configured such that: the exhaust gas
discharged from the internal combustion engine is introduced into the high-temperature
parts of the thermoelectric conversion modules, and the steam of the refrigerant heated
by heat of the exhaust gas is introduced into the low-temperature parts of the thermoelectric
conversion modules. This accordingly makes it possible to prevent an excessively large
temperature difference between the high-temperature parts and the low-temperature
parts and to restrain thermal distortion of the thermoelectric conversion modules.
[0012] This accordingly makes it possible to upsize the thermoelectric conversion modules
and reduce the number of electric wirings and the like at the time when the thermoelectric
conversion modules are attached to the thermoelectric power generating device. This
consequently makes it possible to simplify a manufacturing operation of the thermoelectric
power generating device and to reduce a manufacturing cost of the thermoelectric power
generating device.
[0013] Preferably, the thermoelectric power generating device may be configured such that:
the thermoelectric conversion modules are constituted by first thermoelectric conversion
modules having a high operation temperature range and second thermoelectric conversion
modules having an operation temperature range lower than that of the first thermoelectric
conversion modules, and the steam flow portion is constituted by a first steam flow
portion and a second steam flow portion communicating with the first steam flow portion,
and the thermoelectric power generating device may be configured to include: a body
case accommodating therein the first thermoelectric conversion modules; the exhaust-gas
introduction portion provided in the body case so as to be opposed to the high-temperature
parts of the first thermoelectric conversion modules; the first steam flow portion
attached to an outer side of the body case so as to be opposed to the low-temperature
parts of the first thermoelectric conversion modules; the second steam flow portion
provided above the body case; the second thermoelectric conversion modules provided
above the second steam flow portion so that the low-temperature parts thereof are
opposed to the second steam flow portion; and a cooling water flow portion provided
above the second thermoelectric conversion modules so as to be opposed to the high-temperature
parts of the second thermoelectric conversion modules.
[0014] In the thermoelectric power generating device, the exhaust gas is introduced into
the high-temperature parts of the first thermoelectric conversion modules having a
high operation temperature range, and the steam is introduced into the low-temperature
parts of the first thermoelectric conversion modules. This accordingly makes it possible
to prevent an excessively large temperature difference between the high-temperature
parts and the low-temperature parts of the first thermoelectric conversion modules
and to restrain thermal distortion of the first thermoelectric conversion modules.

thermoelectric conversion modules, and cooling water is introduced into the low-temperature

is performed by the first thermoelectric conversion modules and the second thermoelectric
conversion modules, and in a range where the temperature of the exhaust gas is low,
the power generation is performed by the second thermoelectric conversion modules.
Hereby, it is possible to perform the power generation in a large temperature range,
that is, in a large operating range of a vehicle.

parts of the first thermoelectric conversion modules and the high-temperature parts
of the second thermoelectric conversion modules, it is possible to equalize temperatures
of the low-temperature parts of the first thermoelectric conversion modules and the
high-temperature parts of the second thermoelectric conversion modules, thereby making
it possible to improve generating efficiencies of the first thermoelectric conversion
modules and the second thermoelectric conversion modules.

the first steam flow portion is attached to the body case so as to surround the body
case; and the first thermoelectric conversion modules are attached to both sides of
the body case in a width direction so as to be opposed to each other with the exhaust-pipe

a heat transfer efficiency to the high-temperature parts of the first thermoelectric
conversion modules. This consequently makes it possible to improve the generating
efficiency of the first thermoelectric conversion modules.

control means for controlling a pressure in the steam flow portion based on a temperature
of the exhaust gas introduced into the exhaust-gas introduction portion.

flow portion based on the temperature of the exhaust gas introduced into the exhaust-gas
introduction portion, it is possible to improve the generating efficiency of the first
thermoelectric conversion modules.

range in which the generating efficiency is high. In view of this, if an exhaust-gas
temperature can be estimated, it is possible to estimate around which temperature

temperature under a predetermined atmospheric pressure has a correlation between pressure
and temperature. In view of this, the pressure in the steam flow portion is controlled

portion, and the temperature of the saturated steam is controlled relative to the
temperature of the exhaust gas, thereby making it possible to improve the generating
efficiency of the first thermoelectric conversion modules.

efficiency of the second thermoelectric conversion modules.
Advantageous Effects of Invention
[0032] According to the present invention, it is possible to provide a thermoelectric power
generating device that is able to decrease thermal distortion of thermoelectric conversion
modules and to upsize the thermoelectric conversion modules, thereby making it possible
to simplify a manufacturing operation and to decrease a manufacturing cost.

MODES FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
[0034] An embodiment of a thermoelectric power generating device according to the present
invention will be described below with reference to the drawings. Note that the present
embodiment deals with a case where the thermoelectric power generating device is applied
to a water-cooled multi-cylinder internal combustion engine to be provided in a vehicle
such as an automobile, for example, a four-cycle gasoline engine (hereinafter just
referred to as an engine). Further, the engine is not limited to the gasoline engine.
[0035] FIGS. 1 to 8 are views illustrating one embodiment of the thermoelectric power generating
device according to the present invention.
[0036] First of all, a configuration thereof is described.
[0037] As illustrated in FIG. 1, an engine 1 as an internal combustion engine provided in
a vehicle such as an automobile is configured such that an air-fuel mixture obtained
by mixing, at an appropriate air-fuel ratio, air supplied from an air-intake system
and fuel supplied from a fuel supply system is supplied to a combustion chamber and
then burnt, and then exhaust gas generated along with the burning is emitted from
an exhaust system to the air.
[0038] The exhaust system is configured to include an exhaust manifold 2 attached to the
engine 1, and an exhaust pipe 4 connected to the exhaust manifold 2 via a spherical
joint 3, and an exhaust passage is formed by the exhaust manifold 2 and the exhaust
pipe 4.
[0039] The spherical joint 3 allows the exhaust manifold 2 and the exhaust pipe 4 to swing
moderately, and functions not to transmit a vibration or a movement of the engine

device 17 recovers heat of the exhaust gas discharged from the engine 1, and converts

a body case 20 having an exhaust-pipe portion 19 as an exhaust-gas introduction portion

the thermoelectric conversion modules 27 adjacent to each other in the exhaust direction
are electrically connected to each other via electric wirings 36.

that the heat-receiving substrate 31 is opposed to the exhaust-pipe portion 19 so

body case 20. The thermoelectric conversion module 27 performs a thermoelectric power

34 are formed from a thermoelectric material such as an Mg-Si system, and have such
a characteristic that a thermoelectric conversion efficiency becomes high at an operation
temperature range of around 400°C to 500°C. Note that, in FIGS. 2, 3, the thermoelectric
conversion module 27 is simplified.

portion and a first steam flow portion is provided outside the body case 20 so as
to surround the body case 20, and the steam tank 37 is opposed to the heat-dissipation
substrates 32 of the thermoelectric conversion modules 27 via the body case 20.

portion 19, heat of the exhaust gas is transmitted to the steam tank 37 via the body
case 20, so that the water Wo in the steam tank 37 evaporates and saturated steam

insulating ceramics and constituting a high-temperature part and a heat-dissipation
substrate 43 made from insulating ceramics and constituting a low-temperature part;
and the N-type thermoelectric transducers 44 and the P-type thermoelectric transducers
45 are provided alternately so as to be serially connected to each other via electrodes
46a, 46b.
