FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to food packing and in particular food packing for
temporarily storing a food product, such as a sandwich or a piece of bread with a
topping, e.g. in a lunch package.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] In a number of situations, it is either necessary or convenient to transport food
from a place of preparation to a place of consumption. This is e.g. the case for children
bringing a packed lunch, typically in the form of a plurality of closed sandwiches
or pieces of bread with a topping, to kindergarten or school. A number of products
exist for this purpose, including plastic wrapping, aluminum foil, and greaseproof
paper. A typical way of packing the food is to wrap each sandwich or piece of bread
individually in a piece of the wrapping which has been separated from a roll of wrapping.
This often means that either more wrapping than necessary is used or that too small
a wrapping is used causing the sandwich or piece of bread to fall out of the wrapping
during handling or transportation. Another option is to use individual sheets of greaseproof
paper arranged loosely around each sandwich or piece of bread and place them on top
of each other in a re-useable box. In that case, it can be difficult, especially for
small children, to choose another order of eating the food than from top to bottom
in the package without getting the food mixed up or dropped. Hence, an improved food
packing would be advantageous.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
[0003] It is an object of the present invention to provide a food packing with which the
pieces of food packed therein remain in a condition as close to an initial condition
as possible without being moved around within the food packing during handling and
transportation.
[0004] It is another object of the present invention to provide a food packing with which
food packed in a plurality of such food packings in a shared package, such as a lunch
package, does not get mixed during handling and transportation.
[0005] It is another object of the present invention to provide a food packing with which
it is easy to choose and remove a particular piece of food from a plurality of pieces
of food packed individually in a plurality of such food packings in a shared package,
such as a lunch package, while leaving the remaining pieces of food as intact as possible.
[0006] An object of the present invention is to provide an alternative to the prior art.
[0007] In particular, it may be seen as a further object of the present invention to provide
a food packing that solves the above mentioned problems of the prior art.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0008] Thus, the above described objects and several other objects are intended to be obtained
in a first aspect of the invention by providing a closable food packing for temporarily
storing a food product, such as a sandwich or a piece of bread with a topping, the
food packing being made from a single folded sheet of greaseproof and semi-transparent
or transparent material, such as paper or paper-based material, the food packing comprising:
- a square front panel, a square back panel, and a flap obtained by folding the sheet
along its width, such that
∘ the front panel and the back panel have the same width and the same length and are
connected along one side by the fold of the sheet to form a first closed side;
∘ the sheet extending from the back panel and beyond the front panel to create the
flap, wherein the flap is provided with adhesive material;
- the front panel and the back panel are further connected directly or indirectly to
form a second closed side and a third closed side, such that the food packing in total
comprises three closed sides and one open side,
wherein the food packing is configured for receiving the food product through the
open side, and the open side is configured to be releasably closed by folding the
flap over the open side and fastening it onto the front panel by means of the adhesive
material.
[0009] A food packing according to the present invention is advantageous as it is easy and
cheap to manufacture. Only a few materials are necessary, and the food packing can
easily be folded into a product ready to use.
[0010] The food packing according to the present invention is particularly configured for
packed lunch with several different pieces of bread with a topping, whereby each piece
of bread with a topping is put in a separate food packing. In this way, the topping
from one piece of bread does not mix with topping from another piece of bread. However,
the food packing may also be used for temporary storage of other kinds of food, such
as cake or slices of fruit.
[0011] The food packing is made from semi-transparent or transparent material allowing the
food to be viewed through the closable packing. If the food packing is used to temporarily
store a lunch comprising several different pieces of bread with different topping,
the person having his/her lunch can see the food product through the food packing
and choose which one to eat first.
[0012] By "greaseproof" is meant having a resistance against moisture from food products
typically packed in a lunch package penetrating through the material during use. The
food packing is made from a greaseproof material, such that greasy or semi-wet filling
or topping will not wet the sheet or the food in a neighboring food packing e.g. in
a lunch package. The sheet may comprise a greaseproof coating with hydrophobic and/or
oleophobic properties.
[0013] The sheet may e.g. be made from a type of material also used for other similar products
such as baking paper or deli-paper.
[0014] In some embodiments, the front panel and the back panel are connected directly to
form the second closed side and the third closed side by means of adhesive material
provided in areas along the edges of the sheet. Such a configuration is advantageous
as it is very simple and easy to produce.
[0015] In some embodiments, the front panel and the back panel are connected indirectly
to form the second closed side and the third closed side by means of two symmetrical
triangular side panels extending from each side of the front panel, and two symmetrical
triangular side panels, extending from each side of the back panel, wherein a triangular
side panel of the front panel and a triangular side panel of the back panel overlap
each other and are adhered to each other at part of the overlap by means of adhesive
material to form a closed side with a height tapering from the open side to the first
closed side. By "height" is referred to the dimension perpendicular or substantially
perpendicular to the back panel. The height could also be considered a depth of the
packing. Such a configuration is advantageous as a food packing with a height tapering
from the open side toward the first closed end can hold a larger, such as thicker,
food product than a food packing with no height. Due to the specific configuration,
such a food packing is still very simple and easy to produce, as only a small amount
of extra sheet material is necessary to obtain a larger volume to hold the food product.
[0016] In some embodiments, the sheet is folded along its width at least twice to form a
bottom panel between the front panel and the back panel, such that the front panel
and the back panel are connected indirectly through the bottom panel to form the first
closed side, having a height, wherein the front panel and the back panel are further
connected indirectly to form the second closed side and the third closed side by means
of two symmetrical rectangular side panels extending from each side of the front panel,
and two symmetrical rectangular side panels extending from each side of the back panel,
wherein a rectangular side panel of the front panel and a rectangular side panel of
the back panel overlap each other and are adhered to each other at part of the overlap
by means of adhesive material to form a closed side with a height being the same from
the first closed side to the open side. Such a configuration is advantageous as a
food packing with a height being the same from the opening to the first closed end
can hold a larger, such as thicker, food product than a food packing with no height
and a food product with a height tapering from the open side to the first closed end.
Due to the specific configuration, such a food packing is still very simple and easy
to produce, as only a small amount of extra sheet material is necessary to obtain
a larger volume to hold the food product.
[0017] In some embodiments, the front panel and the back panel each have a length between
12-20 cm, preferably between 15-18 cm; and a width between 6-10 cm, preferably between
7-9 cm. By "length" is meant the dimension between the bottom closed side and the
top open side. By "width" is meant the direction perpendicular hereto. In such embodiments,
the length of the front panel is longer than the width of the front panel, and the
open side is provided along the width of the front panel, e.g. along a larger side
of the food packing. Such a configuration is advantageous, as the food package is
specifically designed for temporarily storage of bread with a topping, preferably
a rectangular piece of bread. Thus, the shape of the food packing is preferably rectangular
and adapted to hold one piece of bread with a topping.
[0018] In some embodiments, the front panel and the back panel each have a width between
12-20 cm, preferably between 15-18 cm; and a length between 6-10 cm, preferably between
7-9 cm. In such embodiments, the length of the front panel is smaller than the width
of the front panel and the open side is provided along the width of the front panel,
e.g. along a longer side of the food packing. Such a configuration is advantageous,
as the opening for receiving the food product is bigger, which makes it easier for
the user to place the food product in the food packing and also to retrieve the food
product again when needed.
[0019] In some embodiments, the side panels have a length which is the same as the front
panel and the back panel, and a width which varies between 0-3 cm, preferably between
0-2 cm, resulting in a height of the food packing between 0-3 cm.
[0020] In some embodiments, the bottom panel has a length between 0.1-3 cm, resulting in
a height of the food packing between 0.1-3 cm.
[0021] In some embodiments, the height of the side panels and/or the bottom panel are substantially
the same. This will be a suitable design for corresponding shapes of food products.
[0022] In some embodiments, the flap is rectangular having the same width as the front panel
and the back panel and having a length which is smaller than the length of the front
panel, preferably less than half the length of the front panel, such as between 1-7
cm, preferably between 1.5-3 cm. Such a design has been found suitable for safely
arranging the flap over the opening without using more material for the food packing
than necessary.
[0023] In some embodiments, the adhesive material on the flap is provided in a straight
line or area along an edge of the flap, extending along the width of the flap. This
is advantageous as the open side can be closed in a substantially sealed manner. Furthermore,
such a closing is easy to produce in a manufacturing process.
[0024] In some embodiments, the adhesive material on the flap is covered by a release liner
until use. A release liner is a paper or plastic-based film sheet, which has typically
been applied during the manufacturing process, used to prevent a sticky surface from
prematurely adhering. It is coated on one or both sides with a release agent which
provides a release effect against any type of a sticky material such as an adhesive
or a mastic. Thus, covering of the adhesive material on the flap with a release liner
is advantageous as prematurely adhering of the flap to other surfaces is avoided before
use, and the food packing can be easily stored until use.
[0025] In some embodiments, the food packing further comprises a gripping tab extending
from the flap and configured for gripping when manually opening of the food packing
after it has been closed. This is advantageous, as it allows a user of the product
to open the food packing easily when he/she needs to retrieve a food product stored
within the closed food packing.
[0026] In some embodiments, the side panels and/or the bottom panel comprise a folding line
around which the side panels and/or the bottom panel can be either folded around the
folding line to obtain a flat food packing or straightened around the folding line
to obtain an expanded food packing. By "straightened" is preferably meant that the
food packing is expanded to its configuration ready to receive the food product. This
is advantageous as a bunch of food packings can be stores on top of each other in
a flat configuration, without disturbing their shape or taking up too much space.
Furthermore, when in an expanded configuration, a food packing with a height can hold
a larger food product than a food packing with no height.
[0027] In some embodiments, the sheet is made from a material having a plasticity allowing
the sheet to be folded and to keep a folded shape after being folded. This is advantageous,
as it makes the sheet easy to handle and to easily fold it into a food packing.
[0028] The sheet has a pre-determined shape. In some embodiments, the sheet is a square
sheet of paper, preferably a rectangular sheet of paper. In some embodiments, the
sheet has a shape comprising two trapezes and a square. "Square" is herein defined
as quadratic or rectangular.
[0029] In a second aspect, the present invention relates to a method for making a closable
food packing as described herein. The food packing is made by the following steps:
- cutting a sheet in a pre-selected shape;
- adding adhesive material at pre-determined areas of the sheet, wherein the adhesive
material is added to
∘ the edges of the sheet constituting the front panel and/or the back panel of the
food packing, or
∘ the edges of the sheet constituting the side panels of the front panel and/or the
back panel; and
∘ to part of the sheet constituting the flap of the food packing;
- covering the adhesive material on the flap by a releasable liner;
- folding the sheet at least once along its width to obtain a food packing with three
closed sides and one open side.
[0030] The first and second aspect of the present invention may each be combined with each
other. These and other aspects of the invention will be apparent from and elucidated
with reference to the embodiments described hereinafter.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
[0032] Reference is made to fig. 1 schematically illustrating a closable food packing 1
according to a first embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 1A shows a three-dimensional
view of the food packing 1, whereas figs. 1B-1E show top-views of a sheet 2 and how
it is folded to obtain a closed food packing 1.
[0033] As illustrated in fig. 1B, the food packing 1 is made from a single rectangular sheet
2 of material provided with adhesive material 12 at pre-determined areas at the edges
of the sheet 2. The sheet 2 is folded once along its width to obtain a rectangular
front panel 3, a rectangular back panel 4 and a rectangular flap 5 extending from
the back panel 4; this is shown in fig. 1C.
[0034] The front panel 3 and the back panel 4 have the same width 6 and the same length
7 and are connected along one side by the fold of the sheet 2, the fold thereby forming
a first closed side 8. The front panel 3 and the back panel 4 are further connected
directly to form a second closed side 9 and a third closed side 10 by means of the
adhesive material 12 provided in areas along the edges of the sheet 2. Thus, in total,
the food packing 1 comprises three closed sides 8, 9, 10 and one open side 11.
[0035] In the embodiment illustrated in fig. 1, the length 7 of the front panel 3 is larger
than the width 6 of the front panel 3, and the open side 11 is provided along the
width 6 of the front panel 3, i.e. along a smaller side of the food packing 1.
[0036] Preferably, the front panel 3 and the back panel 4 each has a length 7 between 12-20
cm, preferably between 15-18 cm; and a width 6 between 6-10 cm, preferably between
7-9 cm.
[0037] In the embodiment in figure 1, the flap 5 is rectangular having the same width 6
as the front panel 3 and the back panel 4 and having a length 18 which is smaller
than the length 7 of the front panel 3 and the back panel 4. In fig. 1, the length
18 of the flap 5 is approximately ¼ of the length of the front panel 3 and the back
panel 4.
[0038] The flap 5 is provided with adhesive material 12 preferably covered by a releasable
liner 16 as shown in figs. 1A-1C. This liner has to be removed before use to expose
the adhesive material as shown in fig. 1D. The adhesive material 12 on the flap 5
of the embodiment in figure 1 is provided in a straight line along an edge of the
flap 5, extending along the width of the flap 5.
[0039] The food packing 1 is configured for receiving a food product through the open side
11. The open side 11 can be releasably closed by removing the releasable liner 16
from the flap 5, as shown in fig. 1D, and folding the flap 5 over the open side 11,
fastening it onto the front panel 3 by means of the adhesive material 12 as shown
in fig. 1E.
[0040] The food package 1 is specifically designed for temporary storage of bread with a
topping, preferably a rectangular piece of bread. Thus, the shape of the food packing
1 is preferably rectangular. However, it can also be used for storage of other shapes
of bread, such as round.
[0041] Reference is made to fig. 2, illustrating a second embodiment of a food packing 1
according to the present invention. The food packing 1 in fig. 2 is almost similar
to the one shown in fig. 1. The only difference being that in the embodiment illustrated
in fig. 2, the length 7 of the front panel 3 is smaller than the width 6 of the front
panel 3, and the open side 11 is provided along the width 6 of the front panel 3,
e.g. along a longer side of the food packing 1. In this embodiment, the front panel
3 and the back panel 4 each preferably has a width 6 between 12-20 cm, preferably
between 15-18 cm; and a length 7 between 6-10 cm, preferably between 7-9 cm.
[0042] The closable food packings 1 illustrated in figs. 1 and 2 are the simplest embodiments
of the present invention. In the embodiments illustrated in fig. 1 and fig. 2, the
food packings 1 have a length and a width but no height. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate
two embodiments of the present invention, wherein the food packing 1 further has a
height 17 provided by side panels 13a, 13b and/or a bottom panel 15.
[0043] Reference is made to fig. 3, illustrating a third embodiment of the present invention,
wherein the food packing 1 further has a height 17 tapering from the open side 11
to the first closed side 8.
[0044] The food packing 1 illustrated in fig. 3 is made from a sheet 2 having a predefined
shape comprising two trapezes and a square, provided with adhesive material 12 at
pre-determined areas at the edges of the sheet 2; see fig. 3C. The sheet 2 is folded
once along its width to obtain a rectangular front panel 3 and a rectangular back
panel 4, wherefrom two triangular side panels 13a, 13b extend, such that the front
panel 3 together with two triangular side panels 13a comprise one trapeze of the sheet
2, and the back panel 4 together with two triangular side panels 13b comprise the
other trapeze of the sheet 2. The flap 5 comprises the square of the sheet 2.
[0045] The front panel 3 and the back panel 4 are connected indirectly by means of the two
symmetrical triangular side panels 13a extending from each side of the front panel
3, and two symmetrical triangular side panels 13b, extending from each side of the
back panel 4. The triangular side panels 13a of the front panel 3 and the triangular
side panels 13b of the back panel 4 overlap each other and are adhered to each other
at part of the overlap by means of adhesive material 12 provided on the sheet 2. The
overlapping side panels 13a, 13b form a second closed side 9 and a third closed side
10, giving the food package 1 a height 17 tapering from the open side 11 to the first
closed side 8.
[0046] The side panels 13a of the front panel 3 have a length which is the same as the length
7 of the front panel 3, but with a width 20 which varies along the length 7 of the
front panel 3. The varying width 20 of the side panels 13a result in a varying height
17 of the folded food packing 1 from the open side 11 to the first closed side 8.
In the same way, the side panels 13b of the back panel 4 have a length which is the
same as the length of the back panel 4, but a width which varies along the length
of the back panel 4.
[0047] The side panels 13a, 13b each comprises a folding line 22, around which the side
panels 13a, 13b can be either folded to obtain a flat food packing 1a with no height,
as shown in fig. 3A, or to obtain an expanded food packing 1b with a height 17 as
shown in fig. 3B. This is advantageous as a bunch of food packings 1 can be stored
on top of each other in a flat configuration without disturbing their shape or taking
up too much space. Furthermore, when in an expanded configuration, a food packing
1 with a height 17 can hold a larger food product than a food packing 1 with no height
17.
[0048] Reference is made to fig. 4, illustrating a fourth embodiments of the present invention,
where the food packing 1 have a height 17 being substantially constant from the open
side 11 to the first closed side 8.
[0049] The food packing 1 illustrated in fig. 4 is made from a single rectangular sheet
2 of material provided with adhesive material 12 at pre-determined areas at the edges
of the sheet 2 as shown in fig. 4B. The sheet 2 is cut at each side, such that the
sheet 2 can be folded twice along its width to obtain a rectangular front panel 3,
a rectangular bottom panel 15, a rectangular back panel 4, four rectangular side panels
13a, 13b and a rectangular flap 5 extending from the back panel 4; see fig. 4C. The
two rectangular side panels 13b of the back panel 4 extend beyond the length of the
back panel and is only separated from the bottom panel and the rectangular side panels
13b on the front panel 3 by the cutting provided in the sheet 2.
[0050] The sheet 2 is folded twice along its width to form the bottom panel 15 between the
front panel 3 and the back panel 4, such that the front panel 3 and the back panel
4 are connected indirectly through the bottom panel 15, to form the first closed side
8.
[0051] The front panel 3 and the back panel 4 are further connected indirectly by means
of two symmetrical rectangular side panels 13a extending from each side of the front
panel 3, and two symmetrical rectangular side panels 13b, extending from each side
of the back panel 4. The rectangular side panels 13a of the front panel 3 and a rectangular
side panels 13b of the back panel 4 overlap each other and are adhered to each other
at part of the overlap by means of adhesive material 12 to form a closed side with
a height, being the same from the first closed side 8 to the open side 11. Furthermore,
part of the side panels 13b of the back panel 4, is folded such that they overlap
with the bottom panel 15. Adhesive material 12 may be added on the bottom panel 15,
to adhere the side panels 13b of the back panel 4 to the bottom panel 15.
[0052] The side panels 13a, 13b and the bottom panel 15 also comprise folding lines 22,
around which the side panels and the bottom panel 15 can be folded to obtain a flat
food packing 1a as shown schematically in fig. 4A or straightened to obtain an expanded
food packing 1b as shown schematically in fig. 4B.
[0053] The food packing 1 illustrated in fig. 4 further comprises a gripping tab 21, extending
from the flap 5. The gripping tab 21 is configured for easy manually opening of the
food packing 1 after it has been closed. Such a gripping tab 21 is suitable for all
embodiments of the present invention.
