(54) Improved process for preparing imidazole and 1,2,4-triazole derivatives


(57) An improved process for preparing imidazole and 1,2,4-triazole derivatives comprises the steps of:-

(a) reacting a β-keto ester R1-CO-CH2COOR with a a-halo ketone R2 COCH2X where X = halogen,

(b) hydrolysing the diketo ester to a diketone R1COCH2CH2COR

(c) oxidising the diketone esterto an unsaturated diketone

(d) reacting the unsaturated diketone with imidazole or 1,2,4-triazole

(e) selectively reducing the product of (d) to give a compound offormula:

wherein R' and R2 are optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or phenyl.
