    (54) Sofa-bed

    (57) An armless sofa (or arm-chair)-bed of the kind comprising a three-fold foldable upholstered padded structure (2) which, standing folded, provides an armless long seat (A) or an arm-chair and flattened out provides a couch, characterized by a space (11) saving pedestal (1) to receive a drawer (3) for bedding (4). The drawer bottom (31) is provided with swingable wheels (33) to run it on the floor in and out of pedestal (13). The bottom wall of mattress-like padding (2) is centrally fastened with ropes (5) or the like to the structure (1) so that its margins (20) may be raised for dressing with bed-clothing (4).

    Description

[0001] The invention relates to an armless sofa (or arm-chair)-bed of the kind comprising a padded and upholstered structure consisting of three foldable sections which standing folded provide an armless sofa and flattened out provide a double (or single) couch.

[0002] An armless sofa (or arm-chair)-bed is known in accordance with the prior art portion of Claim 1 wherein an upholstered mattress-like padding has its bottom wall completely fastened to a rigid frame consisting of three sections. With an arrengement of this kind the couch obtained, when the three sections are flattened out, cannot be dressed with bed-clothing as a true bed because the same cannot be conventionally bucked. On the other hand in such piece of furniture there was no space for bedding disposal when the piece of furniture was used as ar armless sofa or when bed dressing was not needed. Consequently the resulting undressed couch of the prior art is used only employing sleeping-bags instead of usual bed-clothing.

[0003] The invention as claimed is intended to remedy these drawbacks. It solves the problem of how to dress with bed-clothing a couch resulting from an armless sofa (or arm-chair) by a mattress-like upholstered padding whose bottom wall is fastened to the frame or bed-spring frame only centrally whereby its margins may be raised for bed-clothing dressing. Moreover said padded and upholstered structure is held by a space saving-pedestal to receive a drawer holding the bed-clothing. The drawer bottom is provided with swingable wheels for running it on the floor in and out of pedestal.

[0004] According to a preferred embodiment of present invention the mattress-like upholstered padding comprises at least two side pads, each pad being received in a pocket of a multipocket upholstery, said pokets having a common bottom wall. This arrangement provide an easier bucking.

[0005] One way of carrying out the invention is described in detail below with reference to drawings which illustrate only one specific embodiment, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective front view of an armless sofa transformable according to the present invention in a double-bed.

Figure 2 is a substantially-side perspective view of the armless sofa shown at figure 4.

Figure 3 is a substantially back perspective view of the sofa according to the present invention as shown at figures 4 and 5.

Figure 4 is a perspective view of an armless sofa as shown at figures 4, 5 and 6 partially distended so as to be still usable as a deck-chair sofa.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of the distended sofa i.e. the incipient bed, resulting from the armless sofa of figures 1, 2, 3 and 4. The bed is partially dressed and the bedding drawer is in an opened position. The mattress-like padding is raised to show the cord fastenings to the bed-frame.

Figure 6 is a perspective view of the bed shown at figure 1 upside down to set forth the drawer bottom and cord-fastenings of mattress to the bed frame staves.

Figure 7 is a perspective view of an upholsteryless bed frame.

Figure 8 is a perspective underside view of the mattress-like padding for a best understanding of the drawings small sections of two pads are shown outside.

[0006] All over this specification for "sofa-bed" or "armless sofa" or "armless long seat" it is meant a piece of furniture which in a first arrangement provides an armless sofa or long seat and in a second arrangement, i.e. flattened out provides a double-couch or double-bed. Alternately, for "armless arm-chair" it is meant a padded and upholstered piece of forniture which in a first arrangement provides an arm-chair and in a second arrangement, i.e. flattened out, provides a single-couch or single-bed. In the drawings only the sofa=double-bed is shown. However in each of figures 1, 2 and 3 a dotted line at 0 is shown alternately to indicate the possible extent of an arm-chair=single-bed version.

[0007] With reference to figures from 1 to 4 of the drawings a conventional armless sofa (or arm-chair)-bed comprises a padded upholstered structure 2 consisting of three foldable sections 1, 1' and 1" which standing folded (figures 1, 2 and 3) provide an armless sofa (or arm-chair 0) and flattened out (figure 5) provide a double (or single) couch.

[0008] According to the present invention frame 1 and pedestal 13 in both position (compacted and distended) provide a free space 11 for receiving a bedding drawer 3, to be explained in the following. The padding 2 which, as known, comprises a mattress covered with an upholstery covering, according to the present invention comprises at least one central bag 20 (in the drawings two central bags are provided) and at least two side bags 22. Each bag envelopes a respective pad 20', 20'; 22', 22' and is provided with a respective slide-fastener or zipper 20", 20"; 22", 22". Moreover, according to the present invention mattress 2 is fastened to the structure staves 10 only with the central part of its bottom wall, whereas the side margins 22 are available to be raised for bucking the bed clothing (figure 5). When the bed-clothing 4 are not in use, they may be disposed in a bedding rectangular drawer 3. The drawer frontal wall is provided with an upholstered thin padding 39 and its bottom is provided with four auto-swinging turning wheels 33 by means of which bedding drawer may be easily moved on the floor, along with mattress-like padding, standing closed (figures 4 and 6), or alone (figure 5). It is thus self-explaining how with piece of furniture arranged as arm-chair and or long seat it may be used as a true sofa; while- distending or extending the piece of furniture arrangement it may be used as a deck seat or couch. Whereas with conventional or user bed-clothing a true bed may be provided: a single bed with the arm-chair 0 or a double-bed with the long seat of figures 1, 2 and 3. The provision of a multipocket envelope with separate pads improves the bed-clothing bucking ease.
