(57) An alpha-numeric display device comprises a plurality of elongate elements arranged
in the form of a cross (6,7,8) and a diagonal cross (9,10,11,12) within a rectangle
(1,2,3,4,5). A full alpha-numeric character set may be generated by approximately
energising selected elongate elements. The display device comprises twelve elements
instead of the fourteen elements normally provided in such a display device thus reducing
the number of electrical connections required and the information required to be stored
in order to drive the display.
The elongate elements may be formed as liquid crystal cells and a plurality of display
devices may be formed into a multi character display arrangement. When addressing
the display devices in matrix form a 4 x 3 matrix may be used instead of the 4 x 4
matrix required for a 14 element display.
