The enlargement of a basic sail for sailcraft by means of detachable segments |
(57) @ Sail with provision to enlarge the sailarea by means of segments provided with
fastening system without the need of changing the rigging of the basic sail.
|

|
[0001] The enlargement of the sailarea of a sailing-vessel, sailing - cars etc. could up
to now only be brought about by setting sails with an adjusted area: a large sail
in light wind conditions and a small sail for heavier winds. It was also possible
to reduce the sailarea by means of reefing with a binding or rolling reef. The achievement
of a larger sailarea could so far only be effected by replacing the relative small
sail completely by a sail with a larger area. In principle it could occur that this
action had to be repeated several times so that a stock of sails with in - creasing
sailarea had to be available.
[0002] This invention concerns a method with which, starting from a basic sail, the sailarea
can be enlarged by fastening separate, detachable segments to the basic sail according
to wish or need. The advantages of this system are:
a) There will be no need of a large stock of sails;
b) It is considerably cost-effective;
c) The shape of the added segment enlarges the basic sail by its cut, which is conform
to that of the.basic sail: segment and basic sail are adapted to each other.
d) The basic sail is characterized such that there is no need to loosen the setting
of the sail, i.e. tack, clew and top remain attached to the mast.
[0003] The invention contains sails that are attached to mast or forestay and so-called
flying sails.
[0004] Fig. 1 of the encksures shows an example of a basic sail that can be enlarged by
fastening a certain segment (Fig.2). The attachment of the enlarging segment can be
done by means of a separable zipfastener, fastening tape or any other suitable fastening
method. (A and B on Fig. 2 and Fig 1). The fastening starts by connecting 1 and 2
to each other; the basic sail and segment are then connected to each other over the
whole length along the rectangular sides. At 3 and 4 both parts are secured by tape,
press-buttons or other means. In cases where necessary for the enlargement of the
sail or where sailbattens are already applied in the basic sail ( 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and
10) an extra part of a pocket will be stitched to the segment, having an open end
which enables the batten to be put into the battenpocket on the basic sail. Fig. 3
shows this system in outline (pocketparts 6 and 9 and batten 11).
[0005] 41 On fig. 4 the invention is applied on a foresail (12 and 13) and on fig. 5 on
a so-called flying sail, e.g. a spinnaker (14 and 15).
1. Basic mainsail, foresail or flying sail for a sailing-vessel or sailing-car and
detachable segments with the characteristic that on basic sail and segments provisions
are made such that with the aid of these provisions the segments, which are adapted
to the basic sail, can be fastened to the latter In order that an enlargement will
be achieved and such that upon desire segments of various areas can be applied without
the necessity of loosening the setting of the sail.
2. Basic mainsail, foresail or flying sail for a sailing-vessel or sailing-car and
detachable segments with the characteristic that the pockets for sailbattens on the
segments are open in such a way that the sallbattens can be extended into the basic
sail.
3. As claims 1 and 2 with the characteristic that the detachable segment is cut in
such a way that it will form a continuation of the basic sail.
4. Stock of sails according to claims 1, 2 and 3 with the characteristic that the
connecting element consists of a zipfastener, hook- and loopfasteners or press-buttons:
