(54)	Apparatus and method for dropout compensation

(57) A dropout compensation system which digital data samples are stored in a memory and a dropout is indicated by the insertion of a sample having a characteristic value, such as all 1 's. Detection of such a sample on readout initiates the process of dropout compensation.
