(57) Substituted 2-pyridyl-methylthio- and sulfinyl-benzimidazoles, with gastric acid-inhibiting effects, have the formula

wherein X is S or SO; R₁ is H, CH₃, OCH₃ or CF₃; R₂ is N-hetero- cycylyl, amino, alkylthio, arylthio, alkoxy or aryloxy; and R₃ and R₄ are each H or alkyl.
