(54) | Process and apparatus for the production of high quality calcined coke |
(57) A process and apparatus for the production of high quality calcined coke are described.
The coke feed (e.g. green coke from a delayed coker) is heated at a bulk temperature
of from 650 to 850°C under conditions such that the coke heating rate is no more than
100°C/minute until from 50 to 90 weight percent of the volatile matter content is
removed, whereafter the heated coke is calcined at a bulk temperature of from 1350
to 1470°C for at least 10 minutes to produce a relatively hard and non-friable calcined
coke. Preferably the calcined coke is produced in a rotary hearth furnace divided
by an annular radiation shield into a central high temperature calcining zone and
a surrounding devolatilizing zone, the radiation shield defining with the hearth an
uninterrupted gap of sufficient width for coke to pass from the devolatilizing zone
to the central zone but sufficiently narrow to prevent coke in the devolatilizing
zone being substantially affected by heat generated in the central zone. |
