(54) Postage meters having worm gear rack movement system


(57) A postage meter has a print drum (202) with print wheels 1208) which are shiftable to select the value of the postage. The positions of the print wheels (208) are controlled by the positions of rack gears (210). The racks (210) are displaced by a pinion (214) which in one embodiment is shifted from rack to rack. The racks (210) are arranged in an arcuate or part annular array around the pinion. Alternatively, the racks (210) are displaced by the pinion (214) which is selectively directly engaged with the racks one at a time and the racks (210) are shifted with respect to a fixed position for selective engagement with the pinion (214).
