    (54) High pressure fuel injection system

    (57) A high pressure fuel injection system which utilizes a pressure regulating or control valve (28) in a fuel return tube (26), provides a high residual pressure within a charge chamber (15) of a fuel injector (5) between injections. Maintaining a high residual fuel pressure between injections boosts the actual injection pressure over a wide range of engine speed and load conditions, independant of pump speed. Such injection pressures provide improved fuel atomization, with consequent reductions in particulate emissions and increased fuel efficiency.
