Process for the manufacture of refractory articles |
(57) A shaped refractory article is manufactured by a process comprising coating granular
refractory particles with a solution of a binder composition containing a curable
phenolic resin, evaporatin the solvent and subjecting the coated particles to compression
in a mould. The solution of the binder comprises a solution of the phenolic resin
in a mixture of at least one solvent having a low rate of evaporation and at least
one solvent having a high rate of evaporation. At least a major proportion of the
solvent(s) having a high rate of evaporation is evaporated during the evaporation
stage in the manufacturing process and the solvent(s) having a low rate of evaporation
is retained after the evaporation stage so as to impart cohesion to the coated granular
refractory particles during the compression moulding stage.
