[0001] The present invention relates to a stackable lid for containers, in particular for
jars and other cylindrical containers.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The containers of the above kind are usually provided with discoidal lids, integral
moulded from a plastic material, with the feature that, generally speaking, the lid
has a peripheral channel-like groove to fit onto the edge of the container opening,
as well as an embossed portion covering about all of the lid and protruding towards
the inside of the container such that further to its contributing to the internal
fitting of the lid within the container opening, it prevents the lids stacked in the
container closing machine from becoming fitted one within the other thus hindering
their handling in order to obtain an automatic closing of the container (see CH-A-443949).
[0003] The need for forming the lids with the above construction has prevented hitherto
the manufacture of these lids from cardboard by pressing or stamping out at a cost
which is lower than in the case of lids moulded from thermoplastic material, because
the pressing and stamping means used with cardboard are unable to give the required
pressing of the lids which is necessary to prevent their fitting with one another
(see DE-A-1786586)
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0004] The above problem has been solved with the lid according to the invention, which
can be manufactured from cardboard.
[0005] With respect to the present state of the art represented by DE-A-178658 which describes
a stackable lid manufactured from drawn or pressed paper material in the shape of
a tray the present invention is characterized in that the lid has adhered to it another
piece of the same material, also in the shape of a pressed tray, of a height corresponding
to that of the first piece and contracting the inner face of the said first piece,
yet having an external outline corresponding to the inner outline of the container
opening. This second piece has a marginal skirt in contact with the bottom of the
first tray.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0006] For a better understanding of the instant specification, a drawing is enclosed wherein
a practical embodiment of the lid according to the invention is shown only by way
of example. In the said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in diametral section of the lid in disassembled condition;
Figure 2 is a similar view of the assembled lid, and
Figure 3 shows several stacked lids, in diametral section.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
[0007] The lid as shown in the drawing consists of a pressed piece 1 of cardboard or the
like material in the shape of an inverted shallow tray, the internal diameter of which
corresponds to the outer diameter of the container opening to be closed. A second
piece 2, also in the form of a tray, of a lesser diameter and height preferably corresponding
to the height of the first piece, is incorporated within the said first piece 1. The
outer diameter of the tray 2 corresponds to the inner diameter of the container opening
to be closed.
[0008] The tray 2 has an bow-shaped marginal skirt 3 which is placed in contact with the
inner face of the first tray bottom, such that a channeled groove 4 is formed between
the faces of both trays, into which the edge of the container to be closed is to fit.
[0009] As clearly shown in figure 3 of the drawing, when the lids are stacked, they cannot
fit one within the other, since this is prevented by the internal piece 2 protruding
from the lid bottom.
[0010] This lid may be manufactured from pressed cardboard pieces at a lower cost than equivalent
lids of thermoplastic material.
1. Stackable lid for containers, comprising a pressed sheet piece (1), preferably
of cardboard material, in the shape of an inverted tray the inner perimeter of which
corresponds to the outer perimeter of the container opening to be closed, characterized
in that it comprises a second piece (2) of the same material, in the shape of a tray
with a smaller diameter and a height corresponding to the height of the first piece,
being adhered in contact with the inner face of the said first piece, the outer outline
of the second piece corresponding to the inner outline of the container opening, the
second tray having a perimetral skirt (3) in contact with the bottom of the first
tray (1).
