[0001] The present invention relates to a device for producing a shrill clear sound, in
particular to a device adapted to be placed in the mouth and produce the shrill sound
by blowing air, through the device.
[0002] It is well known to whistle and produce a musical sound, without the use of the vocal
cords, by blowing air through the pursed lips. The sound obtained is shrill and clear.
However, the intensity of the sound thus obtained is limited and a great effort is
required for producing the sound. It is also well known to whistle by utilizing a
whistle, a small wind instrument in which sound is produced by the forcible passage
of breath through a slit in a short pipe or tube. The sound thus obtained can be of
higher intensity than the sound obtained by blowing air through the pursed lips without
using any device. However, such sound usually has a different tone than the tone produced
by whistling without the use of known whistles.
[0003] It is the object of the present invention to provide a device which enables producing
a shrill clear sound, imitating the tone of the sound produced by whistling without
using any external device. It is a further object of the invention to provide a device
which produces a sound of a much higher intensity than the intensity of the sound
obtained by forcing air through the lips without the device of the invention.
The use of the device is simple and very little effort has to be devoted in order
to produce the high intensity sound, as compared with producing the sound by blowing
air through pursed lips. Therefore, the device of the invention can easily be used
by any unskilled person including children and women, and not only by those skilled
in whistling by forcing air through pursed lips. The device of the invention is small
and simple and fits easily into the mouth.
[0004] In accordance with the invention there is provided a device for producing a shrill
sound comprising a rigid thin plate folded to form two segments having an acute angle
between them, wherein each segment has an aperture located substantially opposite
the other aperture, adapted to be placed in the mouth and produce the shrill sound
when air is blown therethrough.
The device of the invention can be made of any rigid thin material such as plastic
or metal. The acute angle between the two segments of the device is such that the
device can easily fit into the mouth. Thus, the acute angle can range between 5 degrees
and 45 degrees. Preferably the acute angle ranges between 10 to 30 degrees.
The aperture can be of any shape, such as round or rectangle. Preferably the aperture
is a round hole having a diameter ranging between 1.5 to 2.5mm. For an easy insertion
of the device into the mouth, it is preferred that a handle extends from one of the
segments of the device. The handle can be of any desired shape and since the device
is quite small in its dimensions, the handle can serve as means for attaching the
whistling device to other handy devices needed by the user.

[0006] Device 1 shown in figures 1 and 2 is made of a rigid round plate 2, shown in figure
3, having two round holes 3 and a handle 4 which form an integral part of the plate.
When plate 2 is folded along line 5 to an angle of about 20 degrees, device 1 is produced.
Handle 4 shown in figure 1 has a hole 6, centrally located therein. Hole 6 can be
used in order to attach device 1 to other articles such as a chain (not shown in figure)
holding keys, tokens or the like. In order to produce the shrill sound utilizing device
1, device 1 is placed in the mouth, as illustrated in figures 7 and 8, so that its
straight edge 7 is pressed against the tongue 9 and its round edges 8 are pressed
against the lips, one round edge against the bottom lip and the other round edge against
the upper lip. Such positioning of the device in the mouth forms a substantially sealed
cavity 10 between the tongue 9, the lower palate 12 and the lower side of device 1.
Cavity 11 is formed between the roof of the mouth (i.e. the upper palate) 13, the
upper side of device 1, and the tongue 9. Cavity 11 is connected to the windpipe (not
shown in figures) and has but one small opening i.e. hole 3 at the upper side of device
1. When air is forced from the lungs while device 1 is placed in the mouth as described
above, the air passes from the lungs via the windpipe and the throat to cavity 11
where its only outlet is hole 3. Some of the air coming out of hole 3 at the upper
side of device 1 is forced into hole 3 of the lower side of device 1, and oscilates
in cavity 10. The flow of air coming out of hole 3 at the lower side of device 1 as
shown in figures 7 and 8 by arrows, makes the shrill sound.
[0007] Devices 30 and 31 shown in figures 4 and 5 are made of rigid rectangle plates 32,
each having two round holes 33. Device 30 comprises two equal segments while device
31 has two unequal segments. The long segment 34 of device 31 serves as a handle.
Devices 30 and 31 when placed in the mouth to form two cavities in a similar way as
described above for device 1, produce a high intensity whistle when air is forced
therethrough.
[0008] Device 20 shown in figure 6 represents another embodiment of the invention. Device
20 has all the essential features of device 1, i.e. a plate of an oval shape 22 folded
along its main axis 25 having two holes 23, one on each side of the folded plate.
Device 20 also has a box 24, sealingly attached to the outer side of one of the segments
of plate 22. In order to produce a shrill sound utilizing the device 20, device 20
is placed in the mouth so that the box 24 is directed towards the bottom of the mouth
and the tongue and lips are placed as with device 1 described above. When device 20
is used for whistling it is not essential to form a sealed cavity between the tongue,
the lower palate and the lower side of the device, because box 24 serves as a sound
box. The dimensions of box 24 determines the tone of the sound produced by blowing
air through device 20.
Device 20 can also be used for whistling by forcing air through the open hole 23 while
the whole device or part thereof is placed out of the mouth.
1. A device for producing a shrill sound comprising a rigid thin plate folded to form
two segments having an acute angle between them, wherein each segment has an aperture
located substantially opposite the other aperture, adapted to be placed in the mouth
and produce the shrill sound when air is blown therethrough.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein the plate is substantially round or ellipse.
3. A device according to claim 1 wherein the plate is substantially rectangular.
4. A device according to claims 1 to 3 wherein the two segments are equal in size.
5. A device according to claims 1 to 3 wherein the two segments are not equal in size.
6. A device according to claims 1 to 5 wherein the acute angle between the segments
ranges between 10 to 30 degrees.
7. A device according to claims 1 to 6 wherein the aperture is substantially round,
having a diameter ranging between 1.5 to 2.5 mm.
8. A device according to claims 1 to 7 further comprising a rigid box, wherein the
rims of said box are sealingly attached to the outer side of one of the segments around
the aperture to form a sound box.
9. A device according to claims 1 to 8 further comprising a handle extending from
one of the segments of said device.
