    (57) A multi-room type heat pump air conditioner comprises an outdoor unit (A) including a compressor (1), an outdoor four-way valve (2) and an outdoor heat exchanger (3), a plurality of indoor units (B,C,D), each including an indoor heat exchanger (10) and a throttle device (12), and the indoor units being connected in parallel by means of a first and a second connecting pipe (7,8) so as to form a refrige­rating cycle. Each indoor heat exchanger has one end connected to an indoor four-way valve (13) so as to switch the end from one of the first and the second connecting pipe (7,8) to the other; each indoor heat exchnger has the other end connected to a third connecting pipe (9) for connecting between the indoor units, through the throttle device (12). The third connecting pipe (9) and the indoor four-way valve (13) are connected to each other through an opening and closing valve (18) in each indoor unit.
