    (54) Aerosol generating means for a smoking article and smoking article with such means


    (57) The present invention relates to a smoking article, preferably in cigarette form, which produces an aerosol that resembles tobacco smoke. The article preferably comprises a short combustible fuel element (10) having a density greater than 0.5 g/cc, a separate substrate (12) bearing an aerosol forming material, a heat conducting member (14) recessed from the lighting end of the fuel element (10), which preferably encloses the substrate (12), a resilient insulating jacket (72) encircling at least a portion of the fuel element (10), and an optional tobacco jacket (88) encircling at least a portion of the aerosol forming material.
