[0001] This invention relates to a cover for a piece of upholstered furniture, particularly
for settees and armchairs, said piece of furniture having a lower front panel, a seat,
two arms, a backrest, back and two side surfaces, with the cover being formed by a
non-stretch warp and weft fabric comprising three portions, a centre portion and two
side portions, connected by seams, the centre portion engaging the lower front panel,
seat, arms, backrest and back of the piece of furniture and each of the side portions
engages one of said side surfaces of the piece of furniture.
[0002] The usual covers consist of a mere wrapping for temporary protection, i.e., for periods
when the piece of furniture is out of use, whereby they do not allow for any other
way of ordinary use, as a protection in use. The known covers are made to size for
each piece of furniture, whereby they are relatively expensive, or using knitted material
which, in view of its stretch properties, allows it to be used with a range of pieces
of furniture of similar dimensions, with the drawback of having slack areas and overstretched
areas, spoiling the appearance thereof.
[0003] Having the object of providing advantages not obtainable with the regular covers,
the invention proposes a cover of the type stated at the beginning which is characterised
in that a flat development, of the centre portion comprises: a first area, which engages
the back and backrest of the piece of furniture and having a generally rectangular
shape, forming two longitudinal sides, a free transverse side and a transverse connecting
side; a second area, which engages the seat and arms of the piece of furniture having
a generally trapezial shape forming a short edge coextensive with said transverse
connecting side, a long edge and two equal longitudinal sides, each of which is provided
with an oblique connecting portion with one of the longitudinal sides of the first
area; and a third area which engages the lower front portion of the piece of furniture,
having a generally trapezial shape and forming a long edge coextensive with the long
edge of said second area, a short free edge and two sides, the edges of said third
area being closer together than the edges of said second area; and in that a flat
development of one of said side portions has slightly obtuse-angled L shape, with
a long leg formed by an inner longitudinal edge, an outer longitudinal edge and a
front edge and with a short leg formed by an outer side edge, an inner side edge and
by an upper connecting edge.
[0004] The cover of the invention provides a solution for the previous drawbacks, i.e.,
it allows for normal use and adequate adaptation to a wide range of pieces of furniture
of a similar type.
[0005] Drawings relating to a cover for an armchair are described hereinafter:
Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of the flat development of the centre portion of
the cover.
Figure 2 illustrates a plan view of the flat development of one of the side members.
Figure 3 illustrates a schematic perspective view of an armchair provided with the
cover of the invention; in said view there is an ideal representation of the cover,
by which it is adapted closely to the sharp edges and surfaces of the armchair; for
greater clarity the wrinkles and other misfitting areas which may occur in the cover
have been omitted.
[0006] The cover of the invention is for pieces of upholstered furniture having a seat,
such as armchairs and settees having arms and comprises three pieces of non-stretch
woven fabric, i.e. with warp and weft, preferably padded, the three pieces being firmly
connected by seams.
[0007] The said three component pieces of the cover are a centre portion 1 and two side
portions 2 which in the example shown are for an armchair.
[0008] In a flat development, the centre portion 1 is seen to have a first area 3 engaging
the backrest 22 of the armchair and also at least part of the back thereof, not shown
in the figures. This first area 3 is generally rectangular in shape, forming a free
transverse edge 11, a transverse connecting edge 10 and two longitudinal sides 3a.
These sides 3a are preferably provided with oblique portions 3b starting in the transverse
edge 11 and said oblique portions have vertices A, A′ and B, B′.
[0009] Following the first area 3, there is a second area 4 which engages the seat 20 and
at least part of the arms 21. The second portion 4 forms a short edge coextensive
with the transverse connecting edge 10, a long edge 4a having ends C, C′ and two equal
longitudinal sides 7, each of which is provided with an oblique connecting portion
6 with the corresponding side 3a of the first area.
[0010] Finally there is a third area 5 which engages the lower front panel 19 of the piece
of furniture, which is also trapezial, having a long edge coextensive with the long
edge 4a of the second area, a short free edge 9 having ends D, D′ and two sides 8.
[0011] A flat development of a side portion 2 forms an L with a slightly obtuse angle. The
long leg 14 is formed by an outer longitudinal edge 12, an inner longitudinal edge
13 and by a front edge 16. In turn, the short leg 15 is provided with an outer side
edge 15a, provided preferably with an outwardly curved portion 15b starting beside
the upper connecting edge 17 with the inner side edge 15c. The corners 18 are preferably
rounded.
[0012] The edges formed by the transverse edge 11 of the first area 3 and by the short edge
9 of the third area 5, as well as the outer longitudinal edges 12 of the side portions
2 are preferably provided with a hem 24 housing a cord or elastice tape for closing
the cover against the piece of furniture.
[0013] Figure 3 shows how the described areas of the fabric pieces are adapted to the parts
of the armchair which they engage, the schematic nature of such figure being recalled,
in which the main purpose is to show the said adaptation. Obviously the cover tends
to round off the sharp edges of the piece of furniture and the desired adaptation
of the cover to the piece of furniture is achieved by inserting the parts of the cover
into the interstices existing between the different upholstered members of the piece
of furniture. The seams 23 connecting the portion 1 with portions 2 are also to be
seen in Figure 3.
[0014] The cover will be made up with the corresponding modification of the width of portion
1 for application to a settee.
[0015] The fabric forming portions 1 and 2 will be provided on the outer face thereof with
an appropriate finish for a favourable appearance, particularly padding, possibly
with figures and coloured portions, with a view to permanent use of the cover.
[0016] The cover of the invention offers as advantages the possibility of adaptation to
a wide range of pieces of furniture of the same type and the possibility of being
applied usually appropriately to protect the furniture against rubbing, stains and
other damage.
[0017] The length in cm of different types of portion 1 are given below:
