    (54) Color image forming apparatus


    (57) A color image forming apparatus wherein an image retainer (1, 120, 400) and a transfer member (5, 150, 500) are arranged unitarily in a process cartridge (130, 430), the process cartridge (130, 430) being formed so that it can be inserted into and withdrawn from an apparatus body having a plurality of developing devices (122, 422). The process cartridge (130, 430) has a cleaning device (129, 429) and a transfer member (5, 150, 500), and the apparatus body has a device (163′, 451′) for recovering waste toner. The waste toner scraped off from a surface of the image retainer (1, 120, 400) by the cleaning device (129, 429) is recovered into a hollow in the transfer member (5, 150, 500).
