(57) Decals and processes for making them and transferring images to substrates involve
paper bases (1) treated, on at least one side thereof by sizing, and on one side only
with pigmented adhesive coating (2), whereby the pores throughout essentially the
whole of the paper's cross section have been filled and the coating and the paper
firmly bonded together. The uncoated side (3) is not substantially porous and is essentially
free from filler material. An image (5) and a plastic film (4) are applied, in either
order, on the uncoated surface (3) without penetrating the same and the paper base,
when wet, being easily releasable from the film/image (4, 5), from which it may be
removed in essentially one piece or a few large pieces, in the course of transfer
to a substrate (6), thanks to the bonding effect of the sizing and the pigmented coating.
