(54) | Self-configuring memory system |
(57) A self-configuring memory system for a computer having a plurality of memory banks
operated by strobe signals and having connection points for receiving add-on memory
means, the system comprising: add-on memory means (3); selector means (8) which receives
a signal identifying the connection between the add-on memory means (3) and the connection
point and a signal indicating whether other memory means (3) are connected to the
system and provides a signal indicating the connection between the add-on memory means
(3) and the connection point; a communication bus (9) to pass these signals to and
from the connection points; and routing means (7) receiving memory strobe signals
from a system bus (2) and routing selected strobe signals to the add-on memory means
(3) under the control of the selector means (8), so the appropriate strobe signals
are routed to the add-on memory means (3) or the add-on memory means (3) is disabled
depending on which connection means the add-on memory means (3) is connected to and
whether other memory means are connected to the system thereby ensuring the memory
banks are used in the appropriate order. The selector means (8), memory means (3)
and routing means (7) may be provided on an add-on memory board (1B) inserted into
a connector slot of the computer. |
