    (54) Solid state sunlight readable illuminated display device


    (57) A solid state sunlight readable, night vision compatible display device comprises a legend (15), of which at least a portion is translucent and is back lit by a fluorescent coating (14) on an electroluminescent light source (13). Under high ambient light conditions the fluorescent coating (14) is energized primarily by ambient light transmitted through the legend (15). Under low ambient light conditions the fluorescent coating (14) is energized primarily by light from the electroluminescent light source (13). A solid state shutter (16) whose operation is coordinated with that of the light source is provided in front of the legend (15) to prevent undesired message displays when the display device is "off".
