(57) A magnetically-actuated display element includes a non-magnetic substrate (2) having a coating of magnetic particles (24) and a plurality of surfaces of contrasting colour. The display element is mountable to permit it to assume a plurality of stable positions each displaying one of the surfaces of contrasting colour, and is cooperable with a fixed electromagnet for moving the display element to a selected one of its plurality of stable positions.
