(57) Respiratory protective apparatus comprises a flexible hood (1,21) having a neck seal
(3,24), which is preferably a septum (24) of highly elastic material, at a lower open
end of the hood (1,21). The hood (1,21) is of a size capable of enveloping the head
of an adult wearer or the upper torso of an infant, in which case the neck seal (3,24)
engages round the infant's waist. A filter (7,29), which may be an NBC filter, and
air moving means (8,28) are mounted to a wall of the hood (1,21) with the filter (7,29)
located outside the hood (1,21) and the air moving means (8,28) inside the hood (1,21)
and in direct communication with the filter (7,29) through an aperture (14,26) in
the wall of the flexible hood (1,21). A source of power (10) for the air moving means
(8,28) is supported on the hood (1,21), either in a pocket (9) formed in the outer
wall surface of the hood, or in a housing (30) located on the mounting for the filter
(29) in a position between the filter (29) and the aperture (26) in the hood.
