    (54) Automated cure press closure system and method

    (57) An automated shimming device (70, 72) and method for use with a form and cure press is shown. The shimming device (70, 72) is composed of a plurality of contiguous wedge sets. The wedge sets are disposed between two dc servo drive (113, 119) and linear activator (115, 123) assemblies. One servo drive (113) is an UP drive which urges all lower wedges (85) laterally which in turn force the upper wedges (71) to travel vertically along inclined planes which slide along corresponding inclined planes on the lower wedges. A similar downward motion is performed by a DOWN drive (119). The wedge sets form a bottom surface to close the gap between the lower pressing bar (66) and an upper curing mold (36) of a form and cure press assembly. The wedges assure desired dimensional tolerances in the materials (47, 49) being cured and formed.
