    Description

    FIELD OF INVENTION



    [0001] This invention relates to drawer slides and more particularly drawer slides wherein the drawer is capable of being locked within the cabinet in an extended open position thereby prohibiting removal and thereafter, unlocked to allow complete removal of the drawer from the cabinet.

    BACKGROUND



    [0002] It is well known in the art to provide for drawer slides comprised of two channels with a ball bearing retainer housing balls to reduce friction which is positioned between the outer and inner channel. Normally the larger channel is affixed to the cabinet sidewalls and the inner channel is affixed to the drawer. Both channels have generally curved side flanges extending substantially at right angles from the web.

    [0003] Often such slide assemblies are used in filing cabinets in order to support heavy loads in the drawers. It is therefore necessary to provide a stop so that the drawer is not accidentally pulled from the file cabinet.

    [0004] From time to time however, it is necessary to completely remove the drawer from the cabinet, for cleaning purposes or other reasons. Because of this, various locking/release mechanism have been employed. Generally these consist of a projection extending from one slide and a pivoting lever being attached to the other. By finger movement the lever is moved from a normal locked position to a second position out of register with the stop, thereby permitting the drawer to be removed from the cabinet.

    [0005] DE-A-2540581 describes a lockable/releasable drawer slide assembly, for use with a cabinet and drawers comprising the features of the pre-characterizing portion of claim 1.

    [0006] It has been found however, that such mechanisms are not fool-proof and are often complicated. Many of the lock and release mechanisms presently found in the art are not able to withstand the constant opening and closing of the file cabinets which is normal in today's business world. Moreover, such mechanisms have been found to be costly to produce and complicated to assemble.

    [0007] It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a drawer slide release and lock mechanism which is efficient, long-wearing and inexpensive to produce.

    [0008] Moreover, it is an object of the present invention to produce a release/lock mechanism which can readily fit within the webs of the outer and inner channel of a normal two-channel drawer slide.

    SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION



    [0009] Therefore, this invention seeks to provide a lockable/releasable drawer slide assembly for use with a cabinet and drawers, characterized in that said releasable locking means comprises a release lever, a butterfly catch including a pair of outwardly biased wings and a stop block; wherein in operation when said releasable locking means is in a first position, said wings of said butterfly catch abut said stop block and when said releasable locking means is in a second position said wings are retracted inwardly, free from contact with said stop block.

    [0010] The present invention consists of three parts which are easily constructed from suitable materials. They consist of a release lever, a winged butterfly catch and a pair of projecting stop blocks. The stop blocks are mounted into the end of the large outer channel which is affixed to the cabinet. Both the butterfly catch and the release lever are mounted between the flanges on the web of the smaller (inner) channel. The release lever is slideably mounted within the channel whereas the butterfly catch is fixed.

    [0011] The butterfly catch has a pair of diagonally extending and outwardly resiliently biased wings attached to a fixed non-flexible portion. These wings are equipped with grooves. In the normal locked position the wing tips are biased outwardly and substantially in contact with the flanges of the inner slide channel.

    [0012] The release lever is equipped with a pair of projections at one end which are adapted to fit in a locked position within an aperture of the butterfly catch. In the locked position, the wing tips abut against the spaced apart stop block projections. When in operation, the release lever is moved longitudinally along the web of the smaller (inner) slide channel away from the butterfly catch, the two projections extend into and along the grooves in the wings, thereby exerting force on the wings and pulling them inwardly towards the center of the web.

    [0013] When it is desirable to remove the drawer from the cabinet the release lever is moved along the web away from the butterfly catch and the projections on the release lever which extend along and within the grooves of the wings, pull the wings inwardly and thereby bring the wing tips out of contact with the pair of stop blocks and thus permit the entire drawer slide with the butterfly catch and the release lever therein, along with the drawer, to be removed from the cabinet.

    Figure 5 shows the drawer slide completely removed from the cabinet slide, the locking mechanism being in the unlocked position;

    Figure 6 is similar to Figure 5 but the locking mechanism is in a locked position;

    Figure 7A shows an exploded view of a drawer slide assembly locking mechanism removed from the cabinet slide with a view of the inside portion of the cabinet slide;

    Figure 7B is an enlarged view of the right (front) end of the inside surface of the cabinet slide; and

    Figure 8 is an exploded view of the lock/release mechanism.


    DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION



    [0015] In Figure 1, a large outer channel cabinet slide 1 has slidingly engaged within it a smaller (inner) drawer slide 2. To enable the drawer slide to slide within the cabinet slide, a ball bearing retainer 3, having a plurality of balls 4, is positioned between side flanges of the two channels. Drawer slide 2 is equipped with a number of flange tabs 5 having apertures 6 therein to enable the slide to be mounted on the drawer. Drawer slide 2 is prevented from moving to the left (or rear) of cabinet slide 1 by an upturned flange 7 located on large cabinet slide 1. A rubber bumper 8 is fitted on flange 7. Large channel 1 has side flanges 9 bent upwardly at substantially right angles to the web of the channel slide. In Figure 1 there is a longitudinal aperture 27A on the web of the drawer slide 2.

    [0016] In Figure 2, one notes that the inner channel 2 has upturned end and side flanges 10 which are bent at substantially right angles to the web, and therefore, 180° from those flanges 9 of large channel 1 such that the side flanges 9, 10 are substantially parallel to one another. Large channel 1 is also equipped with a number of apertures 11 which allow the channel slide 1 to be secured to the sidewalls of a cabinet. A tab 12 is turned inwardly from the web of large channel 1 in order to act as a stop for ball retainer 3. A rivet 13 secures a stop block within one end of the cabinet channel 1.

    [0017] In Figure 3, the drawer channel 2 has been extended outwardly of the cabinet channel 1, partially exposing a release lever 15, which is a part of the lock/release mechanism. One notes the distance "X" between the flange 5 and release lever 15.

    [0018] In Figure 4, release lever 15 has been moved within the web of channel 2 towards tab 5 and is therefore, closer to the same at a distance of"X1". One also notes that the release lever 15 has an elongated spring tab 19 with a projection 19A thereon and a neck 18 (as seen in Figure 1). Projection 19A is adapted to slide in aperture 27A of drawer slide 2. As shown in Figure 4, the right hand side of the neck 18 has a ridge 18A which makes it semi-rigid. The left hand remote end of neck 18 is more resilient. Butterfly catch 20 is fixedly mounted to drawer slide 2 by means of a rivet 14. It is equipped with an aperture 22 and a pair of wings 21.

    [0019] In Figure 5, one notes that the drawer slide 2 has been removed from the outer cabinet channel 1 exposing the release lever 15 and the butterfly catch 20. The lock/release mechanism is in the locked position wherein the wings 21 have moved inwardly from the side flanges 10 of the inner drawer slide 2.

    [0020] Figure 5 shows the two portions 20 and 15 in same relative configuration to one another as in Figure 4.

    [0021] In Figure 6, by way of example of the mechanism, lever 15 by means of thumb aperture 16, has been moved back towards the butterfly catch 20 such that projections 24 extend through aperture 22. This permits resilient wings 21 to again take their normally outwardly biased position against flanges 10. Thus the configuration shown in Figure 6 has the release lever 15 and butterfly catch 20 in the same position, relative to one another, within the inner drawer slide as the position partially shown in Figure 3.

    [0022] Figure 7A is similar to Figures 5 and 6, except that the inner side of large channel 1, and the outer side of inner channel 2 is shown. One sees that in the separated position, the ball retainer 3 holding the balls 4 is moved to the extreme right side of channel 1. It is, however, prevented by moving to the right by means of a stop block 26, which has outer ridges 30 which abut the ends of flanges 9 of the large outer channel 1.

    [0023] Stop block 26 is more clearly seen in Figure 7B. One notes that stop block 26 is fixedly attached to the end of cabinet slide 1 by means of a rivet 13. The stop block 26 has two grooves 29 which allow the inner channel flanges 10 to slide over the stop block when the lock mechanism is in the unlocked position. Stop block projections 25, in the locked position, abut the tips of wings 21 of the butterfly catch 20.

    [0024] Figure 8 shows an exploded view of the lock/release mechanism wherein the release lever 15 is fitted within the flanges 10 and slides along the web of drawer slide 2. It abuts inner surface 2B. Butterfly catch 20 is also mounted on surface 2B by means of the rivet 14 through aperture 28 of butterfly catch 20 and aperture 27 of drawer slide 2. In the normal position wings 21 extend outwardly and rest adjacent the flanges 10. A groove 23 is located within each of the wings 21 of butterfly catch 20. The grooves 23 diverge outwardly from aperture 22.

    [0025] Projections 24, located on release lever 15, are adapted to extend either through aperture 22 or within grooves 23, depending upon whether the lock release mechanism is in the locked or open position. When inner channel 2 is fitted in ball retainer 3, which is nested in outer cabinet channel 1, the tips of wings 21, in the normal locked position, contact stop block projections 25 and therefore, lock the inner drawer channel 2 within the cabinet slide 1 preventing the former from being removed.

    [0026] In operation when release lever 15 is moved by means of thumb aperture 16, away from butterfly catch 20, the projections 24 leave aperture 22 and are guided along grooves 23 of wings 21. Because the projections move along the mid-line of the web 2B, they pull resilient wings 21 inwardly such that the two wings 21 are able to fit within/between projections 25, thereby allowing the inner drawer slide 2 to be removed from the outer cabinet slide, and thus the drawer can be removed from the cabinet. At the same time, projection 19A and spring lever tab 19 move from left to right in groove 27A.

    [0027] Once the drawer is removed and the operator releases his hold on thumb aperture 16, the release lever tends to revert back to its locked position because of the action of spring lever tab 19 and the resiliency of wings 21 of butterfly catch 20.

    [0028] When one wishes to replace the drawer in the cabinet, the lock/release mechanism is put into position as shown in Figure 5, and then the drawer can be replaced into the cabinet. When the release mechanism 15 is moved back towards the catch 2 to place the drawer in the locked non-removable position.


    Claims

    1. A lockable/releasable drawer slide assembly for use with a cabinet and drawers comprising:
       an outer slide channel (1) adapted to be secured to a cabinet wall;
       an inner slide channel (2) adapted to be secured to a drawer;
       a ball bearing retainer (3) and a plurality of ball bearings (4) disposed between said outer slide channel (1) and said inner slide channel (2); and
       a releasable locking means adapted to prevent said drawer from being withdrawn from said cabinet, characterized in that said releasable locking means comprises a release lever (5), a butterfly catch (20) including a pair of outwardly biased wings (21, 21) and a stop block (26);
       wherein in operation when said releasable locking means is in a first position, said wings (21, 21) of said butterfly catch (20) abut said stop block (26) and when said releasable locking means is in a second position said wings (21, 21) are retracted inwardly, free from contact with said stop block (25).
     
    2. A slide assembly as claimed in Claim 1 wherein said butterfly catch (20) is fixedly attached within said inner slide channel (2) between side flanges (10), and includes an aperture (22) therein;
       said outwardly biased wings (21, 21) are resilient, and diverge towards and abut said side flanges (10) when in said first position;
       each of said wings (21) further including a groove (23) therein, said groove (23) being parallel to the longitudinal axis of each of said wings (21).
     
    3. A slide assembly as claimed in Claim 2 wherein said release lever (15) is slideably mounted within said inner slide channel (2) adjacent said butterfly catch (20);
       said release lever (15) comprising a pair of spaced apart projections (24) near one end and comprising a pair of spaced apart projections (24) near one end and comprising a finger aperture (16) near the opposite end;
       wherein, in operation, said projections (24) are adapted to extend into said butterfly catch aperture (22) when in said first position, and extend into said grooves (23) in said wings (21) when in said second position.
     
    4. A slide assembly as claimed in Claim 3 wherein said release lever (15) further comprises an elongate spring tab lever (19) within said finger aperture (16);
       said spring tab lever (19) being resilient and having a projection (19A) on its remote end;
       said projection (19A) adapted for sliding movement within an aperture (27A) in the web of said inner slide channel (2).
     
    5. A slide assembly as claimed in Claim 1 wherein said stop block (26) is fixedly mounted between side flanges (9) of said outer slide (1) at one end thereof, and comprises a pair of elongate projections (25, 25);
       said projections (25, 25) being spaced apart and parallel to the longitudinal axis of said outer slide (1);
       said projections (25, 25) being spaced inside side flanges (9) of said outer slide (1) and adapted to fit within flanges (10) of said inner slide (2).
     
    6. A slide assembly as claimed in Claims 2, 3 and 5 wherein when in operation, said inner slide (2) is extended from said outer slide (1) and said releasable locking means is in said first position, the ends of said wings (21, 21) abut said stop block projections (25, 25) and said projections (24) on said release lever (15) extend into said butterfly catch aperture (22);
       and when said release lever (15) is moved away from said butterfly catch (20);
       said projections (24) of said release lever (15) extend into said grooves (23) on said wings (21, 21) thereby biasing said wings (21, 21) inwardly towards the center of said inner channel (2) such that said wing ends lie between said stop block projections (25, 25) in said second position, thereby allowing said inner slide channel (2) to be removed from said outer slide channel (1).
     
    7. A slide assembly as claimed in Claim 4, wherein in operation said spring lever tab (19) is resilient so that said release lever (15) is urged towards a locked position in order to ensure that after said inner slide channel (2) is inserted into said outer slide channel (1) the release lever (15) returns to the locked position.
     


    Ansprüche

    1. Ein sperr- und auslösbarer Schubladenschiebemechanismus zum Gebrauch in Verbindung mit einem Schrank und Schubladen, umfassend:
       eine äußere U-Gleitschiene (1), die zur Befestigung an einer Schrankwand konstruiert ist;
       eine innere U-Gleitschiene (2), die zur Befestigung an einer Schublade konstruiert ist:
       einen Kugelkäfig (3) und eine Mehrzahl von zwischen der besagten äußeren U-Gleitschiene (1) und der besagten inneren U-Gleitschiene (2) angeordneten Lagerkugeln (4); sowie
       ein auslösbares Sperrmittel, das so konstruiert ist, daß es das Herausziehen der besagten Schublade aus dem besagten Schrank verhindert, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das besagte auslösbare Sperrmittel einen Auslösehebel (5), ein ein Paar schräg auswärts weisender Flügel (21, 21) umfassendes Flügelsperrelement (20) und einen Anschlagblock (26) umfaßt;
       wobei bei Betätigung, wenn sich das besagte Sperrmittel in einer ersten Lage befindet, die besagten Flügel (21, 21) des besagten Flügelsperrelements (20) an den besagten Anschlagblock (26) angrenzen und, wenn sich das besagte auslösbare Sperrmittel in einer zweiten Lage befindet, die besagten Flügel (21, 21) einwärts zurückgezogen sind, so daß zwischen ihnen und dem besagten Anschlagblock (25) kein Kontakt besteht.
     
    2. Ein Schiebemechanismus nach Anspruch 1, bei dem das besagte Flügelsperrelement (20) zwischen Seitenflanschen (10) fest innerhalb der besagten inneren U-Gleitschiene (2) angebracht ist und eine darin vorgesehene Öffnung (22) umfaßt;
       die besagten schräg auswärts weisenden Flügel (21, 21) rückprallelastisch sind und in der besagten ersten Lage in Richtung der besagten Seitenflansche (10) auseinanderstreben und an diese angrenzen;
       jeder der besagten Flügel (21) des weiteren eine darin vorgesehene Rille (23) umfaßt, wobei die besagte Rille (23) zu der Längsachse jedes der besagten Flügel (21) parallel ist.
     
    3. Ein Schiebemechanismus nach Anspruch 2, bei dem der besagte Auslösehebel (15) gleitbar innerhalb der besagten inneren U-Gleitschiene (2) anschließend an das besagte Flügelsperrelement (20) angeordnet ist;
       der besagte Auslösehebel (15) nahe dem einen Ende ein Paar von mit Abstand voneinander angeordneten Vorsprüngen (24) umfaßt und nahe dem entgegengesetzten Ende eine Fingeröffnung (16) umfaßt;
       wobei die besagten Vorsprünge (24) so konstruiert sind, daß sie sich in der besagten ersten Lage in die besagte Öffnung (22) des Flügelsperrelements erstrecken und daß sie sich in der besagten zweiten Lage in die besagten Rillen (23) in den besagten Flügeln erstrecken.
     
    4. Ein Schiebemechanismus nach Anspruch 3, bei dem der besagte Auslösehebel (15) des weiteren einen innerhalb der besagten Fingeröffnung (16) befindlichen länglichen Federlaschenhebel (19) umfaßt;
       der besagte Federlaschenhebel (19) rückprallelastisch ist und an seinem fernliegenden Ende einen Vorsprung (19A) aufweist;
       der besagte Vorsprung (19A) für gleitende Bewegung innerhalb einer Öffnung (27A) in dem Steg der besagten inneren U-Gleitschiene (2) konstruiert ist.
     
    5. Ein Schiebemechanismus nach Anspruch 1, bei dem der besagte Anschlagblock (26) fest zwischen Seitenflanschen (9) der besagten äußeren Gleitschiene (1) an einem von deren Enden angebracht ist und ein Paar länglicher Vorsprünge (25, 25) umfaßt;
       die besagten Vorsprünge (25, 25) mit Abstand voneinander angeordnet und zu der Längsachse der besagten äußeren Gleitschiene (1) parallel sind;
       die besagten Vorsprünge (25, 25) mit Abstand voneinander innerhalb der Seitenflansche (9) der besagten äußeren Gleitschiene (1) angeordnet und so konstruiert sind, daß sie innerhalb der Flansche (10) der besagten inneren Gleitschiene (2) passen.
     
    6. Ein Schiebemechanismus nach den Ansprüchen 2, 3 und 5, bei dem, wenn bei Betätigung die besagte innere Gleitschiene (2) aus der besagten äußeren Gleitschiene (1) ausgefahren wird und das besagte auslösbare Sperrmittel in der besagten ersten Lage ist, die Enden der besagten Flügel (21, 21) an die besagten Vorspünge (25, 25) des Anschlagblocks angrenzen und die besagten Vorsprünge (24) des besagten Auslösehebels (15) sich in die besagte Öffnung (22) des Flügelsperrelements erstrecken;
       und wenn der besagte Auslösehebel (15) von dem besagten Flügelsperrelement (20) wegbewegt wird;
       die besagten Vorsprünge (24) des besagten Auslösehebels (15) sich in die besagten Rillen (23) der besagten Flügel (21, 21) erstrecken, was zur Folge hat, daß sie die besagten Flügel (21, 21) schräg einwärts auf die Mitte der besagten inneren U-Gleitschiene (2) zu bewegen, so daß die besagten Flügelenden in der besagten zweiten Lage zwischen den besagten Vorsprüngen (25, 25) des Anschlagblocks liegen und die besagte innere U-Gleitschiene (2) daher aus der besagten äußeren U-Gleitschiene herausgezogen werden kann.
     
    7. Ein Schiebemechanismus nach Anspruch 4, bei dem sich bei Betätigung der besagte Federlaschenhebel (19) rückprallelastisch verhält, so daß der besagte Auslösehebel (15) in Richtung einer gesperrten Lage gepreßt wird, um sicherzustellen, daß nach dem Einsetzen der besagten inneren U-Gleitschiene (2) in die besagte äußere U-Gleitschiene (1) der Auslösehebel (15) in die gesperrte Lage zurückkehrt.
     


    Revendications

    1. Ensemble glissière de tiroir verrouillable/débloquable conçu pour être utilisé avec un meuble et des tiroirs, comprenant :
       un profilé de glissière extérieur (1) adapté pour être fixé à une paroi du meuble ;
       un profilé de glissière intérieur (2) adapté pour être fixé à un tiroir ;
       une cage à billes de roulement (3) et une pluralité de billes de roulement (4) disposées entre ledit profilé de glissière extérieur (1) et ledit profilé de glissière intérieur (2) ; et
       un moyen de verrouillage débloquable adapté pour empêcher ledit tiroir d'être retiré dudit meuble, caractérisé en ce que ledit moyen de verrouillage débloquable comprend un levier de déblocage (5), un verrou papillon (20) comprenant une paire d'ailes rappelées vers l'extérieur (21, 21) et une butée d'arrêt (26) ;
       dans lequel, en utilisation, lorsque ledit moyen de verrouillage débloquable est dans une première position, lesdites ailes (21, 21) dudit verrou papillon (20) sont en appui contre ladite butée (26) et lorsque ledit moyen de verrouillage débloquable est dans une deuxième position, lesdites ailes (21, 21) sont rétractées vers l'intérieur, et ne sont pas en contact avec ladite butée (25).
     
    2. Ensemble glissière selon la Revendication 1 dans lequel le verrou papillon est fixé à l'intérieur dudit profilé de glissière intérieur (2) entre des brides latérales (10) et comporte une ouverture (22) ;
       lesdites ailes rappelées vers l'extérieur (21, 21) sont élastiques et divergent vers lesdites brides latérales (10) sur lesquelles elles butent lorsqu'elles sont dans ladite première
    position ;
       chacune desdites ailes (21) comportant en outre une rainure (23), ladite rainure (23) étant parallèle à l'axe longitudinal de chacune desdites ailes (21).
     
    3. Ensemble glissière selon la Revendication 2, dans lequel ledit levier de déblocage (15) est monté de manière coulissante dans ledit profilé de glissière intérieur (2) à côté dudit verrou papillon (20) ;
       ledit levier de déblocage (15) comprenant une paire de saillies espacées (24) près d'une extrémité et comprenant une paire de saillies espacées (24) près d'une extrémité et comprenant une ouverture pour le doigt (16) près de l'extrémité opposée ;
       dans lequel, en utilisation, lesdites saillies (24) sont adaptées pour s'étendre dans ladite ouverture (22) du verrou papillon dans ladite première position, et pour s'étendre dans lesdites rainures (23) dans lesdites ailes (21) dans ladite deuxième position.
     
    4. Ensemble glissière selon la Revendication 3, dans lequel ledit levier de déblocage (15) comprend en outre un levier allongé à languette à ressort (19) à l'intérieur de ladite ouverture pour le doigt (16) ;
       ledit levier à languette à ressort (19) étant élastique et ayant une saillie (19A) à son extrémité éloignée ;
       ladite saillie (19A) adaptée pour un mouvement coulissant à l'intérieur d'une ouverture (27A) dans l'âme dudit profilé de glissière intérieur (2).
     
    5. Ensemble glissière selon la Revendication 1 dans lequel ladite butée (26) est fixée entre des brides latérales (9) de ladite glissière extérieure (1) à une de ses extrémités, et comprend une paire de saillies allongées (25, 25) ;
       lesdites saillies (25, 25) étant espacées et parallèles à l'axe longitudinal de ladite glissière extérieure (1) ;
       lesdites saillies (25, 25) étant espacées à l'intérieur des brides latérales (9) de ladite glissière extérieure (1) et adaptées pour se monter à l'intérieur des brides (10) de ladite glissière intérieure (2).
     
    6. Ensemble glissière selon les Revendications 2, 3 et 5 dans lequel, en utilisation, ladite glissière intérieure (2) s'étend à partir de ladite glissière extérieure (1) et ledit moyen de verrouillage déblocable est dans ladite première position, les extrémités desdites ailes (21, 21) sont en appui contre lesdites saillies de butée (25, 25) et lesdites saillies (24) sur ledit levier de déblocage (15) s'étendent dans ladite ouverture du verrou papillon (22) ;
       et lorsque ledit levier de déblocage (15) est éloigné dudit verrou papillon (20),
       lesdites saillies (24) dudit levier de déblocage (15) s'étendent dans lesdites rainures (23) sur lesdites ailes (21, 21), pour pousser ainsi lesdites ailes (21, 21) vers l'intérieur vers le centre dudit profilé intérieur (2) de telle sorte que lesdites extrémités des ailes se situent entre lesdites saillies de butée (25, 25) dans ladite deuxième position, ce qui permet ainsi de retirer ledit profilé de glissière intérieur (2) dudit profilé de glissière extérieur (1).
     
    7. Ensemble glissière selon la Revendication 4 dans lequel, en utilisation, ladite languette de levier à ressort (19) est élastique de telle sorte que ledit levier de déblocage (15) est poussé vers une position verrouillée afin d'assurer que, après que ledit profilé de glissière intérieur (2) est inséré dans ledit profilé de glissière extérieur (1), le levier de déblocage (15) retourne à la position verrouillée.
